Regional variations in child health deprivation and its associated factors in Nigeria.

Child health deprivations differ by socio-cultural differences and some demographic and socio-economic factors. Deprivation may be more pronounced by the geo-political zones/regions in Nigeria given the differences in their socio-cultural, education, religion, and economic particularly between the North and the South geo-political zones. Thus, this study examined regional variations in child health deprivation and its associated factors in Nigeria. The 2021 Nigeria Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) was used for the study. A weighted sample size of 26,639 under-five children was analysed…

The Effects of Child Mental Health on Juvenile Criminal Justice Contact and Victimization.

BACKGROUND: There is extensive evidence on the associations between mental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), oppositional/defiant disorder (ODD), and anxiety/depression and delinquency among youths. However, research has largely overlooked the potential confounding from comorbidity of these mental disorders as well as unobserved familial heterogeneity. AIMS OF THE STUDY: This study aims to estimate the causal effects of mental health in childhood (age 4-12) on delinquency in adolescence (age 13-18) by adjusting for comorbid mental disord

Addressing the Impacts of Racism on American Indian and Alaska Native Child Health.

The legacy of racism toward Native Americans is far-reaching. We will review the topic using the conceptual model of racism as a form of violence as it is inherent in racism, as are prejudice and power. Using the basic frameworks of racism as internalized, interpersonal, institutional, and structural, we will discuss the many types of racism affecting Native Americans today. Racism is the bedrock of generations of trauma experienced in Native communities. The generational/historical trauma of racism has led to epigenetic-level changes affecting Native American people today. We will cover the h

The Prevalence, Predictors, and Health Consequences of Disagreement in Reports of Child Maltreatment Exposure.

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence, predictors, and consequences of disagreement between prospective caregiver and retrospective child reports of childhood physical and emotional maltreatment. The design was a secondary analysis of data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a three-decade long UK-based birth cohort. Prospective caregiver reports were in poor to fair agreement with retrospective child reports for physical and emotional maltreatment exposure, with caregivers tending to underreport exposure. Disagreement between reporters was associated wi

A review of single-cell transcriptomics and epigenomics studies in maternal and child health.

Single-cell sequencing technologies enhance our understanding of cellular dynamics throughout pregnancy. We outlined the workflow of single-cell sequencing techniques and reviewed single-cell studies in maternal and child health. We conducted a literature review of single cell studies on maternal and child health using PubMed. We summarized the findings from 16 single-cell atlases of the human and mammalian placenta across gestational stages and 31 single-cell studies on maternal exposures and complications including infection, obesity, diet, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, environmental …

Maternal Weight and Gestational Diabetes Impacts on Child Health: A Narrative Review.

Maternal weight and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have significant implications for both maternal and child health. This narrative review explores the intricate relationship between maternal pre-pregnancy weight, gestational weight gain, and GDM, focusing on their short- and long-term effects on child health outcomes. The review highlights evidence linking maternal obesity and GDM to increased risks of adverse outcomes in infants and children, such as macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia, childhood obesity, and metabolic disorders. It also discusses the intergenerational transmission of met…

Aligning theory with practice: Child health programmes in Malaysia, a Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: The Malaysian healthcare system, particularly for maternal and child health, has been well recognised to provide high-quality services and be at par with systems in other developed countries. Current health programmes and technological advancements effectively detect vulnerable groups of children, such as small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants, antenatally. However, the postnatal care for SGA infants is not clearly evaluated, as this group of children is mostly classified as healthy in many medical contexts, especially in primary care settings. Available health programmes and he…

The association of religion with maternal and child health outcomes in South Asian countries.

OBJECTIVE: Theological beliefs play an important role in cultural norms and could impact women's prenatal and postpartum decisions in South Asia, which has a high burden of disease in children and pregnant women. The aim of this study is to identify any associations religion may have in affecting a woman's decision-making ability, and how that in turn affects maternal and child health, at a group level in multiple South Asian countries. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study utilizing secondary data analysis. METHODS: We used Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) between 2014 and 2018 in Afghani…

Association of single child family with subjective health complaints in children and adolescents.

The number of single-child families has been increasing across developing countries during the last decades. We aimed to examine the association between being a single child (SC) and subjective health complaints (SHCs) in Iranian children and adolescents. This study was conducted as a part of the fifth survey of a national surveillance program entitled Childhood and Adolescence Surveillance and Prevention of Adult Non-communicable disease (CASPIAN-V). This national survey included a total of 14,400 students 7-18 years and their parents from rural and urban areas in 30 provinces of Iran. Data o

Personality functioning as a mediator of adult mental health following child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: The broad range of adverse health outcomes following child maltreatment (child maltreatment) underscores the need to investigate shared trajectories that contribute to associated physical and mental health problems. Previous research focused on different mechanisms, such as emotion regulation or attachment. In the present study, we propose personality functioning, comprising self- and interpersonal regulation and perception, to mediate between child maltreatment and mental and physical health. METHODS: In a German representative sample (N = 2,508), we assessed remembered child mal

Home quality and child health: Analysis of the Survey of Income and Program Participation.

Housing is considered a core social determinant of health (SDH) through mechanisms such as the quality, affordability, and location of the home. However, few nationally representative studies examine these mechanisms simultaneously with child health and healthcare use. To determine the associations between home quality and child health, a series of logistic regression analyses was employed using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). The 2014 SIPP sample is a multistage, stratified sample of 53,070 housing units from 820 sample areas designed to represent the civilian, noninsti…

A systematic review of the profile and density of the maternal and child health workforce in China.

BACKGROUND: To track progress in maternal and child health (MCH), understanding the health workforce is important. This study seeks to systematically review evidence on the profile and density of MCH workers in China. METHODS: We searched 6 English and 2 Chinese databases for studies published between 1 October 1949 and 20 July 2020. We included studies that reported on the level of education or the certification status of all the MCH workers in one or more health facilities and studies reporting the density of MCH workers per 100 000 population or per 1000 births. MCH workers were defined as…

Rape, Child Sexual Abuse, and Mental Health in a Brazilian National Sample.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of self-reported rape and its associations with other forms of violence and mental health outcomes. The Brazilian National Alcohol and Drugs Survey is a probabilistic household survey that collected data from 4,283 Brazilians aged 14 years and older in 2012. The prevalence of rape was 2.3% (n = 107) and the majority (n = 81) of rapes were reported by women. Female gender increased the chances of rape (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.7, 4.3]). Adults aged 35 to 46 years (AOR = 2.0, 95% CI = [1.2, 4.4])

Linked Lives in Double Jeopardy: Child Incarceration and Maternal Health at Midlife.

Parents' relationships with their adult children play an important role in shaping mid and later life health. While these relationships are often sources of support, stressors in the lives of children can compromise parents' health as they age. I consider that a child's incarceration is also a stressor that could imperil parents' health through social, emotional, and economic strains that parents may experience as a result. Using data on 3,159 mothers from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 in a series of lagged dependent variable regression models, I find that a child's incarcerat

Parent and Child Reports of Food Insecurity and Mental Health: Divergent Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity-the inability to provide adequate food for at least one household member sometime during the year-is linked to negative physical and mental health outcomes. Child reports of experiences in other domains of life are only moderately related to parental proxy reports of the same experiences. The goal of our study was to assess the convergence of parent and child reports of food insecurity and several specific mental health symptoms. METHODS: Dyads of parents and children attending medical appointments were surveyed. Inclusion criteria consisted of English-speaking adu
