The morbidity and mortality that are associated with child abuse is a serious concern for the practicing pediatrician. If abuse is to be prevented, physicians must become skilled in recognizing factors that place a child at risk for abuse. Early and minor signs of abuse and neglect must be recognized and reported to assure services if more serious abuse and neglect are to be prevented. Instruments that are used to strike children or burn them leave their imprint on the child. Marks on the skin may signal the existence of internal injuries. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Community-acquired pneumonia is responsible for substantial mortality, and pneumococcus is commonly accepted as a major cause of pneumonia, regardless of laboratory confirmation. PURPOSE: Child abuse is often unrecognized by healthcare practitioners. This study sought to characterize pediatric abuse injury patterns and associated mortality rates in a nationwide cohort.
METHODS: The Kids' Inpatient Database (1997-2012) was queried for patients < 18 years old with a diagnosis of child abuse (utilizing ICD-9 codes for abusive head trauma [AHT], neglect, physical, emotional, sexual, and other abuse).
