The Capacity Profile: a method to classify additional care needs in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

The aim of this study was to determine the interrater reliability and stability over time of the Capacity Profile (CAP). The CAP is a standardized method for classifying additional care needs indicated by current impairments in five domains of body functions: physical health, neuromusculoskeletal and movement-related, sensory, mental, and voice and speech, in children from 3 to 18 years of age. The intensity of care in each domain is defined from 0 (no need for additional care) to 5 (needs help with every activity). The intensity of additional care in each of the five separate domains indicate

Do the reading disabilities of children with cleft fit into current models of developmental dyslexia?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the reading problems of children with cleft fit models of developmental dyslexia. DESIGN: The study compared children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate who had reading disability (n = 46) with those who did not have reading disability (n = 46). The children were matched for age, sex, and grade. The two groups were compared (t tests) on measures of verbal expression, phonemic awareness, and rapid naming. Also, regression analyses compared the relative relationships of these variables to reading disability. PARTICIPANTS: Childr

[Brainstem acoustic evoked potentials in children with developmental disabilities--a useful tool for differential diagnosis].

In a retrospective study brainstem acoustic evoked potentials (BAEP) were evaluated in 222 children with psychomotor retardation or dysmorphic signs. Registrations were done, when no clear response to acoustic stimuli of medium intensity (60-80 dBA) could be obtained during clinical examination. Only 118 children (53%) had normal BAEP. 50 patients (22%) suffered from hearing impairment. 39 children (17%) showed disturbances of neuronal conduction. In 15 cases (7%) a combination of both conditions occurred. The mean age of our children with hearing impairment was 33.1 months, no case having bee

An interdisciplinary health care setting's experience with groups for parents of children having specific disabilities.

This paper describes the planning, implementation, use, and evaluation of a group for parents of children with Williams elfin facies syndrome in an interdisciplinary health care setting. The group utilized a modified educational approach that resulted in significant gains reported by participants in learning about educational opportunities and rights of the handicapped, terminology and labeling of Williams syndrome, and meeting and sharing with other parents. The experience has implications applicable in interdisciplinary health care settings for use of groups as an aid in reducing the conflic

The relationship between occupational therapy and physical therapy test scores in children with learning disabilities.

Twenty-seven children with learning disabilities associated with perceptual deficits were studied in order to determine what relationship might exist between occupational therapy and physical therapy test scores. Intercorrelations were computed and multivariate models were developed for the occupational therapy test items. Numerous positive relationships were demonstrated between the two groups of test items, consistent with previous clinical and experimental data. One test, however, did not duplicate the other, and both are essential in the evaluation of the learning-disabled child with perce

Objectively measured physical activity between children with autism spectrum disorders and children without disabilities during inclusive recess settings in Taiwan.

The purpose of this study was to compare the percent time children with and without autism spectrum disorders (ASD) spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during inclusive recess settings. Forty-eight children (ASD, 23 boys and 1 girl; Non-ASD, 23 boys and 1 girl) aged 7-12 years from 14 schools had their physical activity during recess quantified using a uniaxial accelerometer over a 5-day in school period. Children with ASD were less active during overall recess, lunchtime, first and second morning recess compared to those without disabilities (p < .01). All children in this

Health-related quality of life among mothers of children with cochlear implants with and without developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) are widely used among children with severe to profound hearing loss. Raising a child with a CI presents unique challenges to the family, especially when the child has a developmental disability (CI-DD). AIMS: This study aimed to elucidate the relations between the functioning of children with CIs, their mothers' coping resources (i.e., social support and family-centered care), and maternal health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Also, it examined whether the presence of a DD in addition to the child's deafness moderated these relations. METHODS AND PROCEDU

The impact of the COVID-19 school closures on families with children with disabilities: A qualitative analysis.

The unprecedented school closures in response to COVID-19 have been associated with a number of negative impacts on students and their families. In addition to these difficulties, parents of students with disabilities are faced with prepandemic stresses and challenges that may be exacerbated by the school closures. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the experiences and struggles of parents of children identified with a disability during the COVID-19 school closures. The 15 participants were parents of children with a range of disabilities, including Autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and le

Ethical considerations when conducting research with children and young people with disabilities in health and social care.

Background Rights-based approaches for conducting research with children and young people are now widely accepted by those working in the field. Such approaches focus on the voice of the child and are underpinned by a firm recognition that children are experts on their own lives. However, children and young people with disabilities are less likely to take part in research. Aim To draw on doctoral research conducted with children and young people with disabilities to explore the ethical issues that arose concerning access, recruitment, consent, anonymity, confidentiality and sensitive issues, a

Intensive instruction affects brain magnetic activity associated with oral word reading in children with persistent reading disabilities.

Fifteen children ages 7 to 9 years who had persistent reading difficulties despite adequate instruction were provided with intensive tutorial interventions. The interventions targeted deficient phonological processing and decoding skills for 8 weeks (2 hours per day) followed by an 8-week, 1-hour-per-day intervention that focused on the development of reading fluency skills. Spatiotemporal brain activation profiles were obtained at baseline and after each 8-week intervention program using magnetoencephalography during the performance of an oral sight-word reading task. Changes in brain activit

Nonspeaking children in schools for children with severe mental disabilities in the greater Pretoria area: implications for speech-language therapists.

The aim of this study was to describe children enrolled in registered schools for children with severe mental disabilities in the greater Pretoria area in order to compile a profile of nonspeaking children. Emphasis was placed on the prevalence of nonspeaking children as well as on their functioning in different skill areas in order to assess the need for service delivery. Two questionnaires were developed; the first for obtaining biographical data from teachers; the second for obtaining information on the communication and related abilities of children between 3-12 years. American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Children with Disabilities: American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and American Academy of Ophthalmology: Learning disabilities, dyslexia, and vision.

Dyslexia and other related learning disabilities are serious problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics, through its Committee on Children with Disabilities and the Section on Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus strongly support the need for early diagnosis and educational remediation. There is no known eye or visual cause for dyslexia and learning disabilities, and no effective visual treatment. Multidisciplinary evaluation and management must be based on proven procedures demonstrated by valid researc…

Networks of support: Microboards for children with intellectual disability.

Friendships are an important aspect of social inclusion and can have a positive influence on a child's social and emotional wellbeing beyond childhood. A Microboard is a formal approach to building supportive relationships for people with intellectual disability. Establishing a Microboard during childhood may facilitate a peer support network that endures into adulthood. However, there is limited empirical research exploring the role and design of Microboards in the lives of children with intellectual disability and therefore further research is needed.

Lithium Treatment Is Safe in Children With Intellectual Disability.

Lithium is a widely used and effective treatment for individuals with psycho-neurological disorders, and it exhibits protective and regenerative properties in multiple brain injury animal models, but the clinical experience in young children is limited due to potential toxicity. As an interim analysis, this paper reports the safety/tolerability profiles of low-dose lithium treatment in children with intellectual disability (ID) and its possible beneficial effects. In a randomized, single-center clinical trial, 124 children with ID were given either oral lithium carbonate 6 mg/kg twice per day

Global Disability: Empowering Children of all Abilities.

Worldwide, children are often not meeting their developmental potential owing to malnutrition, infection, lack of stimulation, and toxic stress. Children with disabilities are more likely to experience poverty, neglect, and abuse, and are less likely to have adequate access to education and medical care. Early childhood developmental stimulation can improve language, learning, and future participation in communities. Therapeutic supports and endeavors to reduce stigma for people of all abilities strengthen communities and allow for human thriving.

Applying the World Report on Disability to children's communication.

PURPOSE: The World Report on Disability is an important milestone in the recognition of people with disabilities; however, the Report acknowledges that people with communication difficulties may be underrepresented in estimates of disability. Consequently, this article applies the nine recommendations from the World Report on Disability to supporting children's communication skills. METHOD: Australia is similar to most Minority World countries since it places high regard on articulate and literate communication. Recent large-scale Australian studies of children with speech, language and commu

Disability and victimization in a national sample of children and youth.

Although past research has found higher rates of violence, crime, and abuse among children with disabilities, most studies combine diverse forms of disability into one measure and assess exposure to only one particular type of victimization. Based on a representative national sample of 4,046 children aged 2-17 from the 2008 National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence, the present study examines the associations between several different types of disability and past-year exposure to multiple forms of child victimization. Results suggest that attention-deficit disorder/attention-deficit w…
