Swine can carry Salmonella strains that may be transmitted to humans by pork products. This investigation determined the distribution and types of Salmonella in 12 swine finishing herds and a slaughter facility in Santa Catarina, Brazil. A total of 1258 samples, consisting of environmental, feed, carcass, lymph node, and fecal material were collected and submitted to bacteriological isolation of Salmonella. This study aimed to investigate Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt leaf extract (PLE) in active packaging for the preservation of chilled beef. The UPLC-MS/MS results showed that the main active components of PLE were flavonoids (40.1%), phenolic acids (26.3%), and alkaloids (19%), with scutellarein-7-O-glucuronosyl-(1->2)-glucuronide, luteolin-7-O-glucuronide-(2→1)-glucuronide, kaempferol-3-O-glucuronide, caffeic acid, and p-coumaroylagmatine present in relatively high amounts. A pH-sensitive intelligent film was prepared using gelatin as base substrate and purple cabbage anthocyanins (PCA) as indicator with the aid of ultrasound. Chilled and cut chicken is preferred by consumers for its safeness and readiness to cook. To evaluate the quality characteristics of various chilled chicken products, differences in volatile organic components (VOCs) of six different cut parts (breast, back, leg, heart, liver, and gizzard) of Lueyang black chicken were characterized through gas chromatography-ion mobility spectroscopy (GC-IMS) combined with stoichiometry. A 74-year-old white male farmer was admitted from his primary care physician's office after he presented with symptoms of cough productive of clear sputum, malaise, weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath on exertion for 3 weeks. He was an ex-smoker with a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and coronary artery bypass graft surgery. He did not report any chills, night sweats, or fevers during this presentation.

We report the case of a 73-year-old American traveler who presented with 3 weeks of fatigue, fevers, chills, and pancytopenia. Clinical and laboratory findings were consistent with hemophagocytic lymphohystiocytosis (HLH) and bone marrow biopsy revealed amastigotes consistent with visceral leishmaniasis. The range of endemic visceral leishmaniasis transmission now extends into northern Spain and travelers to this region should use personal protective measures against sand fly exposure.

Efalizumab is one of the new biologic therapies targeting T-lymphocyte activity for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis. Common adverse effects include headaches, nonspecific infection, nausea, chills, and fever. Rebound of psoriasis following discontinuation of the drug has been reported. Relapse events can manifest as recurrent plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, psoriatic erythroderma, and pustular psoriasis. We report a second case of withdrawal flare resulting in generalized pustular psoriasis.

A 31-year-old woman with a five-day prodrome of fever, chills, and diarrhea was hospitalized with severe dehydration and profuse diarrhea due to infection with Campylobacter jejuni. Stool volumes were as high as 8,800 ml per 24 hours. Treatment with intravenous fluids, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and an oral isotonic glucose-sodium solution produced rapid improvement, suggesting a possible role for oral fluid and electrolyte replacement in Campylobacter enteritis.

A 50-year-old white woman had bilateral visual loss associated with fever, chills, and myalgias. Her systemic complaints responded to steroid therapy but visual reductions and retinal lesions have persisted for one year. Fluorescein angiographic findings are identical to those seen in acute retinal pigment epitheliitis but the clinical history is more suggestive of acute macular neuroretinopathy. These two entities may represent different clinical expressions of the same disease.

Eosinophilic myocarditis (EM) is a cardiac manifestation of hypereosinophilic syndrome with a high mortality rate. EM shares imaging features similar to other restrictive cardiopathies, and include patchy intramural late gadolinium enhancement on cardiac magnetic resonance with or without presence of biventricular thrombus. Diagnosis is confirmed on histopathology, and is the current gold standard. Here we report clinical presentation and imaging findings of EM in a 70-year-old woman who presented with fever and chills.

Hantaviruses are enveloped zoonotic RNA viruses hosted by rodents and responsible in the Americas for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. In Europe, they cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and its milder form, nephropathia epidemica. The disease begins abruptly with high fever, chills, headache, back pain and abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting. Diagnosis is primarily made by serology. There is currently no specific medication or preventive available in Europe. Treatment is symptomatic.

A 44-year-old man from Connecticut with no significant past medical history presented to the ED with a 2-week history of sore throat and fatigue, subsequently developing cough, dyspnea, fevers, and chills. The patient reported buying an old camper van and noticed a large infestation of rodent droppings, which he had cleaned thoroughly from the cabin. A patient presented with chest pain, fever, and chills and developed a large pleural effusion while receiving antibiotic therapy. On a CT scan of the chest, multiple loculi of fluid were noted, and at surgery, a complex empyema with an associated bronchopleural fistula related to a granulomatous process in the lower lobe of the right lung was demonstrated. Cultures revealed Histoplasma capsulatum in the pleural fluid as well as in the pulmonary parenchymal process.

Between 20 July and 15 Octoboer 1975, five cases of human infection with Babesia microti were diagnosed on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. The illness was characterized by fever, drenching sweats, shaking chills, myalgia, arthralgia, extreme fatigue, and a mild-to-moderate hemolytic anemia. None of the patients had a history of splenetomy. Although all patients responded symptomatically to treatment with oral chloroquine phosphate, parasitemia and fatigue frequently persisted for several weeks to months.
