A reappraisal of survival data on patients with uveal melanomas has led us to these impressions: (a) that the mortality rate before enucleation is low, estimated at 1% per year; (b) that the mortality rate rises abruptly following enucleation, reaching a peak of about 8% during the second year after enucleation; and (c) that approximately two-thirds of the fatalities could be attributed to the dissemination of tumour emboli at the time of enucleation. From these impressions we believe the following conclusions are warranted: (a) enucleation as it has been performed in the past may have for man

Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT) is a highly aggressive neoplasm of the central nervous system (CNS), most commonly affecting infants and young children. Originally recognized as a distinct entity following cytogenetic identification of monosomy 22 in renal Rhabdoid Tumors, AT/RT now encompasses CNS tumors characterized by SMARCB1 (INI-1) or SMARCA4 (BRG-1) alterations within the SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling complex. The integration of immunohistochemical markers with advanced molecular diagnostics-including next-generation sequencing, DNA methylation profiling, and gene enrichment ana

INTRODUCTION: Melanotic schwannoma (MS) is a rare neoplasm composed of Schwann cells with melanosomes in various maturation stages. While MS is typically observed in spinal nerve roots or peripheral nerves, their involvement in intraocular structures is uncommon. Here, we present a case of spontaneous globe rupture as the presenting feature of intraocular extension of a MS.
METHODS: Enucleation was performed to remove the lesion. Confirmatory light microscopy and immunohistochemistry were used to properly diagnose and differentiate from conventional schwannoma and uveal malignant melanoma.

BACKGROUND: The non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) are a group of neoplasms characterized by proliferation of malignant lymphocytes. Patients with NHL have a wide variety of presenting signs and symptoms, depending largely on the site of involvement and aggressiveness of the disease. Many organs in the body may be affected, including the eye and orbit.
CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old male with a 3-year history of stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who had undergone recent monoclonal antibody therapy presented with a complaint of blur in the left eye with occasional diplopia. Significant ocular findings of

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Choroidal metastases (CM) are the most common intraocular malignancies. With longer survival rates for cancer patients, CM will be increasingly encountered. We evaluated clinical and ultrasonographic (US) characteristics of CM in order to identify diagnostic biomarkers that correlate with the primary tumor site.
METHODS: The medical records of all patients with CM evaluated at the Ocular Oncology Unit between February 2010 and March 2020 were analyzed.
RESULTS: 82 eyes of 70 patients were included. The primary cancer site was lung in 26 patients (37%), breast in 23

The dose rate effect of radiation by 125I plaque on choroidal melanoma and normal intraocular tissue was studied. In the first part of the experiment, high activity plaques (HAP) and low activity plaques (LAP) were implanted on rabbit eyes with experimental Greene choroidal melanoma to deliver a total dose of 10,000 cGy to the tumor apex. The mean dose rate calculated at 0.5 mm from the inner sclera in eight eyes with high activity plaques was 3341.5 cGy hr-1 (1 cGy = 1 rad) while that in ten eyes with low activity plaques was 239.9 cGy hr-1. For tumors less than 1.0 mm in height, both groups

The association of choroidal detachment with malignant choroidal tumors is not well recognized. The authors' experience with six cases suggests that choroidal detachment may be associated with both metastatic tumors and choroidal melanoma. In two of these cases, the choroidal or retinal detachment was so massive that echography was necessary to detect the underlying tumor. Three patients presented with painful visual loss, and three patients presented with painless visual loss or a visual field defect. In one patient, the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment of the choroidal metastasis

With reference to case histories, and after a study of the relevant literature, the authors discuss the possibility or probability of a connection between perforating eye injuries and later development of a melanoma of the choroid, which is often unsuspected clinically. The problem from the ophthalmologist's point of view is compared with the cicatricial carcinoma of the lung, which is accepted as a late sequela by insurance companies.

An eye from an adult with Sturge-Weber syndrome and glaucoma is described histologically following enucleation for massive choroidal hemorrhage. The specimen is noted to contain hemangiomas of the episclera and choroid as well as a partial angle cleavage abnormality. Histologic evidence reviewed herein supports the concept that infantile glaucoma associated with this syndrome may be associated with marked filtration angle cleavage deformities. Some Sturge-Weber patients who develop unilateral glaucoma later as juveniles or adults appear to have milder expressions of angle cleavage abnormality

Introduction: In vivo modeling of intraocular neoplasms remains challenging due to the limitations of conventional methods, such as the poor viability of xenografted B16 melanoma cells, the need for immunosuppression, and discrepancies between histopathological features and those of human uveal melanoma. Developing a biologically relevant, reproducible model for transscleral photodynamic therapy (TS-PDT) using chlorin-based photosensitizers is essential, particularly to assess radiation penetration depth and the safety profile of the method. Methods: A model of an intraocular mass was created

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) comprise around 1% of intracranial neoplasms. The most common location is atrium of the lateral ventricle in children and fourth ventricle in adults. Other rare locations include third ventricle, cerebellopontine (CP) angle and cerebral parenchyma, with only a few cases reported. Authors report three cases of CPP at uncommon locations in pediatric patients. The rarity of these locations, diagnostic dilemma and management aspects are discussed along with an extensive review of the literature.
METHODS: Retrospective institutional data analysis of his

It can be difficult for practitioners to determine the likelihood of malignancy in melanocytic choroidal tumours. This author has therefore devised the MOLES acronym to highlight the most informative clinical features, which comprise mushroom shape, orange pigment, large size, enlargement, and subretinal fluid. Each of these is scored 0 if absent, 1 if subtle or uncertain, and 2 if present. Tumours are categorised as 'common naevus', 'low-risk naevus', 'high-risk naevus' and 'probable melanoma' according to whether the sum of these five scores is 0, 1, 2 or 3 or more, respectively. Tentative r

UNLABELLED: The risk of choroidal melanoma developing from choroidal nevus (CN) varies in range of 0.78-7%. Absence of a common terminology and distinct diagnostic criteria characterizing small melanoma de novo and unusual CN often complicates treatment choice and patient prognosis.
PURPOSE: To study the clinical features and the role of visualization methods in the diagnosis of CN transformation into melanoma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study analyzes the clinical picture and visualization results of 11 patients with initial diagnosis of «choroidal nevus» (n=3) and «suspicious choroidal nevu

We report a case of a patient who presented with symptoms of acute onset scleritis in the left eye but was found to have an underlying necrotic choroidal melanoma. Asymptomatic choroidal melanoma can undergo spontaneous necrosis and manifest as severe scleritis and should be considered as an important differential.

Chordoid meningioma is a rare variant of meningioma that bears a striking histological resemblance to chordoma and has greater likelihood of recurrence. Although most meningiomas occur in the intracranial, orbital and intravertebral cavities, rare meningiomas have been reported in extracranial organs; thus, it is important to be able to distinguish them from other neoplasms that have similar histology but different biological behavior and therapies. A case of chordoid meningioma in a 48-year-old woman who did not have Castleman's syndrome is described in the present report. The patient present

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) is a new ophthalmological imaging technique essentially designed for the study of the anterior eye segment. Over the last 10 months, we've evaluated its contribution to the conservative treatment of anterior uveal melanoma's by means of accelerated proton beam irradiation.
MATERIAL: Using UBM, we have examined 55 cases of uveal melanoma's, whose anterior border was situated at 6 mm or less from the limbus and that were consequently treated by proton beam irradiation.
RESULTS: The presumed tumoral origin was the ciliary body's pars plicata in 13 case

Over the past 15 years 140 patients with choroidal melanoma have been treated by local surgical resection of the tumour. The method appears worth considering for tumours up to 15 mm in diameter not involving more than one-third of the ciliary body. Sixty percent of patients retained useful vision and 25% good vision. Eighty-two percent retained a cosmetically satisfactory eye. The total tumour-related mortality in this group of patients was 9%, almost all of the 12 patients dying having had tumours larger than would now be recommended for local resection. The five-year survival rate among pati

INTRODUCTION: Choroidal osteoma, usually unilateral, is a rare benign tumor of choroid. It is predominantly seen in young females.
CASE: We report a case of a 35-year-old female with unilateral choroidal osteoma associated with choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM). The diagnosis was confirmed with clinical examination, ocular ultrasonography, fundus fluorescein angiography and macular optical coherence tomography. Choroidal neovascular membrane improved with 3 doses of bevacizumab, an anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (Anti-VEGF).
CONCLUSION: Anti-VEGF monotherapy can be a cost effec
