Comparison of plasma metanephrines in patients with cyanotic and acyanotic congenital heart disease.

PURPOSE: The co-occurrence of cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) and PHEO/PGL has been reported, but the role of the hypoxic environment in the pathogenesis of PHEO/PGL remains unclear. Our aim was to compare plasma metanephrine and normetanephrine levels between patients with CCHD and patients with acyanotic congenital heart disease (ACCHD). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study in a prospective cohort of 44 patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) (31 (70.5%) females) with a median age of 37.5 (31.0-55.6) years at the time of evaluation. Thirty-two (73%) patients had CCHD

Concurrent nonfunctional paraganglioma of the retroperitoneum and urinary bladder: A case report with literature review.

Paragangliomas are the neuroendocrine tumors which arise from the chromaffin cell. Tumors arising from the adrenal medulla are known as pheochromocytomas, while others originating from the extra-adrenal site are known as extra-adrenal paragangliomas. Paraganglioma can be multifocal which can arise synchronously or metachronously. Paragangliomas are less functionally active than the pheochromocytomas; they secrete noradrenaline and rarely dopamine, while adrenal pheochromocytomas secrete adrenaline or nor-adrenaline. Nonfunctional multifocal paragangliomas are very rare. We report a case of a 4

The neuroendocrine nature of the glomus cells: an experimental, ultrastructural, and histochemical tissue culture study.

Although the carotid body is an established chemoreceptor, there is considerable evidence also for its possessing a secretory function. Whil … l with established neuroendocrine cells (central nervous system neurons, sympathetic ganglia cells, chromaffin cells) shows striking similarities. On the basis of these findings it is concluded that the glomus cell is a modified neuron of neural crest origin. The embryology, electron microscopy and histochemistry of the carotid body and related glomera and their t …

Paraurachal paraganglioma.

INTRODUCTION: Paragangliomas (PGLs) are frequently reported around the abdominal aorta; however, are extremely rare near the urachus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old woman was referred to the urology department of our hospital for further examination and treatment of a 1.2-cm tumor in the lower abdominal wall, a tumor excision was then performed. On immunohistochemical staining, the tumor and supporting cells were positive for chromogranin A and the S 100 protein, respectively, and were diagnosed as PGL. The PGL was thought to be derived from chromaffin cells that migrated to the wall of the…

Intracerebral Haemorrhage: A Rare Presentation of Phaeochromocytoma.

Phaeochromocytoma is a rare childhood adrenal medullary catecholamine secreting tumour, arising from the chromaffin cells of the sympathetic origin derived from the neural crest cells. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature so far. We report an uncommon presentation in a 5-year-old boy with intracerebral haemorrhage, hemiplegia, and paroxysmal hypertension. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed chronic and acute hemorrhagic infarcts in the left cerebral hemisphere and no vascular anomaly seen on cerebral venogram. Computed tomography scan abdomen showed a mass in the le…

Pheochromocytoma: an updated scoping review from clinical presentation to management and treatment.

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors derived from chromaffin cells, with 80-85% originating in the adrenal medulla and 15-20% from extra-adrenal chromaffin tissues (paragangliomas). Approximately 30-40% of PPGLs have a hereditary component, making them one of the most genetically predisposed tumor types. Recent advances in genetic research have classified PPGLs into three molecular clusters: pseudohypoxia-related, kinase-signaling, and WNT-signaling pathway variants. Specifically, the detection of SDHB-related tumors indicates an increased risk of metasta…

Argyrophil and argentaffin cells in adenomas of the colon and rectum.

The incidence, distribution density and cellular structure of argyrophil and argentaffin cells in 212 colorectal adenomas obtained from 128 colorectums mostly resected surgically were investigated. Out of the 212 adenomas, argyrophil cells and argentaffin cells were found in 162 (76.4%) and 128 (60.4%), respectively. Approximately 10 per cent of adenomas with silver-positive cells showed high distribution densities. There were 128 adenomas in which both argyrophil and argentaffin cells were found. In 33 out of the 128 Paneth's cells and goblet cells were also recognized. The incidence of argyr

Influence of the colonic environment on duodenal G-cell activity and proliferation.

To investigate the effects of the colonic environment on duodenal G-cell activity and proliferation, thirty white rats underwent antrectomy with gastroduodenostomy (control group) or antrectomy with interposition of a 15 mm segment of transverse colon between the gastric fundus and the first duodenal portion (experimental group). Three to four months after surgery, serum gastrin determinations were carried out by radioimmunoassay either in fasted or freely fed rats. The duodenum was then removed and its proximal third was used for G-cell count (immuno-peroxidase method) and for assessment of G

A rare abdomino-pelvic tumor: paraganglioma.

Paragangliomas are rare tumors, with a reported incidence of 2-8 per million. They are chromaffin cell tumors that develop from the neural crest cells and may be divided in tumors derived from the parasympathetic or sympathetic ganglia. We report a case a of a 32-year-old nulliparous woman, referred to our Infertility Clinic. Abdomino-pelvic ultrasound identified a large abdominopelvic tumor, without ovarian origin (both ovaries were identified and had normal morphology). Magnetic Resonance Imaging suggested a right adnexal multicystic, vascularized mass close to iliac vessels and questioning

Functional modulation of human "ganglionic-like" neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) by L-type calcium channel antagonists.

Recent studies suggest that the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors present on chromaffin cells contain a 1,4-dihydropyridine-sensitive site whose occupation blocks membrane depolarization (1). In the present study, several L-type Ca2+ channel blockers inhibited the activation of the nAChRs present in the human neuroblastoma cell line, IMR 32, in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 values ranging from 0.8-3 microM. In contrast, omega-Conotoxin GVIA and omega-Agatoxin IVA had no effect up to 100 microM. Furthermore, the inorganic channel blocker, cadmium, had no effect either alone or on t…

68 Ga-DOTA-FAPI-46 PET/CT Imaging for Restaging in a Patient With Metastatic Pheochromocytoma : Comparison With 68 Ga-DOTA-TATE PET/CT.

Pheochromocytomas (PHEOs) are neural crest-derived tumors originating from the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla and were recognized as one of the subtypes of paragangliomas by the World Health Organization in 2022. 68 Ga-labeled somatostatin analog ( 68 Ga-DOTA-NOC, 68 Ga-DOTA-TOC, and 68 Ga-DOTA-TATE) PET imaging has shown significant performance compared with 123 MIBG scintigraphy in the diagnosis of paragangliomas. It is now known that fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is overexpressed by various cancer-associated fibroblasts, including PHEOs. We would like to present the findings …

Synchronous ipsilateral adrenal cortical adenoma and ganglioneuroma: A case report.

Synchronous tumors comprising of cortical as well as medullary differentiation are rare in the adrenal gland. Collision tumors comprise of two independent neoplasms arising from the cortex and the medulla without any histological admixture. Adrenal cortico-medullary mixed tumors are rare tumors comprising of adrenal cortical and chromaffin cells intermixed with each other. Ganglioneuroma is a rare benign tumor originating from the paravertebral sympathetic ganglia and is rarely seen in the adrenal medulla. The presence of a synchronous ganglioneuroma with an adrenal cortical adenoma in the ips…

Adrenal Pheochromocytoma Treated With Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy.

Pheochromocytoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor arising from chromaffin cells in the adrenal medulla. In most cases, it is benign and tends to remain localized. However since it leads to the development of cardiovascular disease, it is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Treatment options include medical, surgical, or ablative measures, which often adequately control the disease. Primary pheochromocytoma is conventionally treated with external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), while stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is preferred for cases with metastasis. However, lite…

Flank pain after minor trauma as the initial manifestation of malignant pheochromocytoma; a case report.

Pheochromocytoma is a tumor which originates from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla or the sympathetic ganglia. This tumor secrets a high amount of catecholamine and metabolites, causing hypertension crisis with headache, tachycardia, sweating and flushing (classic triad of pheochromocytoma). However, in some cases the disease may cause atypical symptoms or may be asymptomatic. The presented patient is a 34-year-old man who referred to our clinic with left flank pain. He had a history of falling from height. In the primary physical examination, a large mass in the abdominal left upper qu…

Unusual bladder mass in a 14-year-old boy: bladder paraganglioma.

A 14-year-old boy presenting headache crisis, sweating and palpitation was observed. On ultrasound scan, a 3 × 2.5 cm hypoechoic mass, highly vascularized, was observed arising from the left bladder wall. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the mass situated close to the ureteral orifice, with intense peripheral enhancement and a central non-enhanced portion. Left partial cystectomy was performed. Large clear cells, presenting cytoplasmatic granules positive for S100 and chromogranin, were observed at histology. Bladder paraganglioma derives from chromaffin tissue of the sympathic system and

Malignant pheochromocytoma with ganglioneuroblastoma elements in a patient with von Recklinghausen's disease.

A 14-year-old girl with numerous café-au-lait spots in her skin was hospitalized because of fever, weight loss, and a mass of the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Despite intensive chemotherapy, she died 6 months after admission. The autopsy revealed a right adrenal tumor with metastases to liver, lungs, vertebrae, and lymph nodes. Histologically the tumor was a pheochromocytoma with small foci of ganglioneuroblastoma. The catecholamine contents of the tumor were markedly elevated, as confirmed by the catecholamine fluorescence technique. Electron microscopically, the tumor cells contained
