How climate change and deforestation interact in the transformation of the Amazon rainforest.

The Amazon rainforest is one of Earth's most diverse ecosystems, playing a key role in maintaining regional and global climate stability. However, recent changes in land use, vegetation, and the climate have disrupted biosphere-atmosphere interactions, leading to significant alterations in the water, energy, and carbon cycles. These disturbances have far-reaching consequences for the entire Earth system. Here, we quantify the relative contributions of deforestation and global climate change to observed shifts in key Amazonian climate parameters. We analyzed long-term atmospheric and land cover

Affective Sensitivity to Air Pollution (ASAP): Person-specific associations between daily air pollution and affective states.

Individuals' sensitivity to climate hazards is a central component of their vulnerability to climate change. In this paper, we introduce and outline the utility of a new intraindividual variability construct, affective sensitivity to air pollution (ASAP)-defined as the extent to which an individual's affective states fluctuate in accordance with daily changes in air quality. As such, ASAP pushes beyond examination of differences in individuals' exposures to air pollution to examination of differences in individuals' sensitivities to air pollution. Building on known associations between air pol

Machine learning analysis and risk prediction of weather-sensitive mortality related to cardiovascular disease during summer in Tokyo, Japan.

Climate-sensitive diseases developing from heat or cold stress threaten human health. Therefore, the future health risk induced by climate change and the aging of society need to be assessed. We developed a prediction model for mortality due to cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction, which are weather or climate sensitive, using machine learning (ML) techniques. We evaluated the daily mortality of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and cerebrovascular disease (CEV) in Tokyo and Osaka City, Japan, during summer. The significance of delayed effects of daily maxi

Transmission dynamics of dengue and chikungunya in a changing climate: do we understand the eco-evolutionary response?

INTRODUCTION: We are witnessing an alarming increase in the burden and range of mosquito-borne arboviral diseases. The transmission dynamics of arboviral diseases is highly sensitive to climate and weather and is further affected by non-climatic factors such as human mobility, urbanization, and disease control. As evidence also suggests, climate-driven changes in species interactions may trigger evolutionary responses in both vectors and pathogens with important consequences for disease transmission patterns. AREAS COVERED: Focusing on dengue and chikungunya, we review the current knowledge a

The Indirect Influence of Organizational Safety Climate on Football Players' Concussion Reporting Intentions.

Most of the health interventions designed to increase athletes' reporting of potential concussion symptoms have focused only on the individual athlete. Unfortunately, interventions targeted at athletes' knowledge and understanding of concussion risk has not reliably increased their reporting behavior, leading to increased calls for "changing the culture of concussion reporting." To date, no studies have examined the role of organizational safety climate has on concussion-symptom reporting behavior. We hypothesized that players' perception of organizational safety climate would be indirectly re

Forecasts of climate-driven habitat suitability distribution are complicated by taxonomic and cytogenetic complexity in Rhexia (Melastomataceae).

Rhexia (Melastomataceae), a temperate genus composed of 13 species in eastern North America, provides a useful system for evaluating how taxonomic and cytogenetic complexity influence forecasts of climate-driven habitat suitability distribution. Ecological niche models incorporating climatic and edaphic variables were used to estimate current and future habitat suitability for diploid, polyploid, and mixed-cytotype species. Habitat suitability was strongly associated with soil texture, hydrological conditions, and precipitation, with suitable environments characterized by sandy, acidic, and se

We find that outbreak size increases with climate change on average, though results differ across climate models depending on the degree of wintertime warming. In the worst-case scenario, we project peak outbreaks in some locations could increase by up to 40%.

Predicting climate-driven distribution shifts in Hyalomma marginatum (Ixodidae).

Hyalomma marginatum is an important tick species which is the main vector of Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever and spotted fever. The species is predominantly distributed in parts of southern Europe, North Africa and West Asia. However, due to ongoing climate change and increasing reports of H. marginatum in central and northern Europe, the expansion of this range poses a potential future risk. In this study, an ecological niche modelling approach to model the current and future climatic suitability of H. marginatum was followed. Using high-resolution climatic variables from the Chelsa dataset

Genomic Dynamics of the Emergent Candida auris: Exploring Climate-dependent Trends.

Candidozyma auris (formerly known as Candida auris) (C auris) is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen that has emerged as a significant threat to global health. Shifts in climatic conditions may be driving its adaptation and pathogenicity. Its increased ability to tolerate higher temperatures has been suggested as the first adaptation led by anthropogenic climate change in a pathogenic organism. In this study, we analyzed 801 whole-genome sequences isolated in clinical settings from the New York-New Jersey region from 2016 to 2024. Using Bayesian hierarchical logistic regression models, we id

Crack Length of Elastomeric Sealants and Their Service Life in Contrasting Canadian Climates: Effects of Climate Change.

The longevity of polymer-based sealant and jointing products, including elastomers, significantly depends on the level of exposure to sunlight and joint movement. These factors are particularly crucial in the application of polymers in construction due to their susceptibility to degradation under environmental conditions. For instance, diurnal cycles of contraction and dilation, arising from daily temperature fluctuations, impose significant stress on sealants and joints, impacting their durability over time. The elastic nature of polymeric sealants enables them to endure these cyclic mechanic

Shifting transmission risk for malaria in Africa with climate change: a framework for planning and intervention.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to be a disease of massive burden in Africa, and the public health resources targeted at surveillance, prevention, control, and intervention comprise large outlays of expense. Malaria transmission is largely constrained by the suitability of the climate for Anopheles mosquitoes and Plasmodium parasite development. Thus, as climate changes, shifts in geographic locations suitable for transmission, and differing lengths of seasons of suitability will occur, which will require changes in the types and amounts of resources. METHODS: The shifting geographic risk of ma

From talk to action: A randomized controlled design on the role of huddles in shaping safety climate and reducing missed nursing care.

BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care compromises patient safety and care quality worldwide. Although inadequate staffing, high workloads, and poor work environments contribute, brief structured team interventions may reduce care omissions. Proactive huddles aim to enhance communication, coordination, and early risk identification, yet the mediating role of safety climate remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of proactive huddles in reducing missed nursing care and examine the mediating role of safety climate. DESIGN: Randomized controlled design. METHODS: Data were collected

NASA Earth eXchange Hawai'i downscaled climate projections CMIP6 (NEX-HIDCP-CMIP6) dataset.

Hawai'i's complex topography, pronounced microclimates, and geographic isolation make coarse-scale global climate model output inadequate for local planning, and high-resolution climate projections tailored to the state have until now been lacking. To address this gap, we introduce the NASA Earth eXchange Hawai'i Downscaled Climate Projections CMIP6 (NEX-HIDCP-CMIP6), a new archive of downscaled historical and future climate projections based on output from Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) over the State of Hawai'i. Informing atmospheric pollution hotspots and exposure risks under climate change using machine learning: Evidence from 2843 Chinese regions.

Between 2013 and 2022, air pollution exposure caused over one million deaths annually in China, and climate change may further increase such exposure. Here we apply time series and causal inference models to quantify the changes in CO, NO2, O3, SO2, PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations and the relative impacts on all-cause deaths (ACD) in 2843 regions under climate change. We show extreme high temperature and drought increased by 2 and 3 days on average annually in China, whereas extreme precipitation and low temperature decreased by 2 days. In addition to the national upward trend in O3 (average ann

Bat rabies in France: Analysis of national surveillance data reveals contrasting bioclimatic preferences between EBLV-1a and EBLV-1b of the common serotine (Cnephaeus (Eptesicus) serotinus) bats.

Bat rabies in mainland France is mainly caused by European bat lyssavirus 1 (EBLV-1; Lyssavirus hamburg), which is almost exclusively associated with the common serotine bat, Cnephaeus (Eptesicus) serotinus. Two variants, EBLV-1a and EBLV-1b, circulate in France and display largely distinct, parapatric distributions. Because bats are highly sensitive to climatic conditions due to their physiological characteristics, including heterothermy, we investigated the relationship between climate and the geographical distribution of these two variants. Using generalized linear models and species distri

Evaluation of climate change, urbanization, and low-impact development practices on urban flooding.

The Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model was used in this study to evaluate the potential impacts of climate change, urbanization, and low-impact developments (LIDs) on urban flooding in Robe town, Ethiopia. To achieve the objective, four scenarios were developed in order to simulate changes in peak runoff, inundated volume, and the performance of existing drainage systems. The findings revealed that as urbanization increased from 10% to 70%, the inundated volume of nodes and peak runoff increased from 35,418 to 52,118 × 103 m3 and 89.4-111.96 m3/s, respectively. Furthermore, the pea

Cradles, museums, and disequilibria: reconciling biodiversity dynamics using equilibrium theory.

Historical nonequilibrium processes are often considered the main drivers of global biodiversity patterns. We argue that while biodiversity is often out of equilibrium, the concept of equilibrium is still crucial for interpreting macroecological diversity patterns, and current confusion in the literature stems from misunderstandings concerning equilibrium dynamics. We demonstrate how an equilibrium-based framework, such as the 'Equilibrium Theory of Biodiversity Dynamics' (ETBD), illuminates diversity patterns in space and time, including the latitudinal diversity gradient, even in the out-of-

Plant endemism of the Balkan high-mountain fens: a community-level synthesis and their climate change perspective.

The phenomenon of Balkan high-mountain fen plant endemism, unique within Europe, remains poorly studied. We compiled an original dataset of wetland vegetation-plot data across nine countries where Balkan endemics and subendemics occur. We tested the diversity patterns for endemics, non-endemic habitat specialists of bryophytes and vascular plants and matrix-derived taxa with respect to climate, palaeoclimate, edaphic and topographic factors. We used Spearman correlations, Spatial Autoregressive Error Models, Canonical Correspondence Analysis and Principal Component Analysis of abiotic factors

Implicit learning of convective organization explains precipitation stochasticity.

Accurate prediction of precipitation intensity is crucial for both human and natural systems, especially in a warming climate more prone to extreme precipitation. Yet, climate models fail to accurately predict precipitation intensity, particularly extremes. One missing piece of information in traditional climate model parameterizations is subgrid-scale cloud structure and organization, which affects precipitation intensity and stochasticity at coarse resolution. Here, using global storm-resolving simulations and machine learning, we show that, by implicitly learning subgrid organization, we ca…
