Management and employee agreement on reports of organizational policies and practices important in return to work following carpal tunnel surgery.

This study's purpose was to assess the agreement between management and employee ratings of organizational policies and practices (OPP) involved in the return to work process following carpal tunnel surgery. As a part of the prospective community-based Maine Carpal Tunnel II Study, 65 manager and employee pairs completed a questionnaire tapping four OPP dimensions. people oriented culture, safety climate, ergonomic practices, and disability management. It was hypothesized that managers and employees would agree on their assessment of the four OPPs and a composite organizational support index.

Seasonal Variation of Gut Bacterial Community in Wild Apodemus agrarius Is Associated With Intrinsic and Extrinsic Environments.

Environmental factors and the reproductive status of animals have been reported to influence host gut microbial community structure significantly. To date, there is a lack of integrated research reporting the relationships among environmental factors, gut microbial structure, and the life processes in animals. This study collected monthly temperature, precipitation, and vegetation indices in the sampling site, and body size metrics as well as reproductive indicators in wild Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771) from 2016 to 2023; and also collected gut microbes in the monthly animal populations fro

Ethylene-jasmonate interplay involving ERF regulons modulates acute heat stress response in rice seedlings.

Rice (Oryza sativa), a staple cereal crop, is significantly threatened by rising temperatures, which impact all stages of growth, including the crucial early seedling establishment phase. Despite being critical in determining overall growth and productivity, response to acute (short-term intense) heat stress during the early seedling stage remains understudied. Here, by using gradients of heat stress duration and intensity, we identified a critical threshold, beyond which acute heat stress significantly impedes seedling growth. Transcriptome analysis of seedlings exposed to growth-inhibiting t

Vector-borne diseases and their role in COVID-19 dynamics and death rates: focus on India.

As one of the most significant global health emergencies, COVID-19 has placed extraordinary demands on healthcare systems worldwide. In India, its widespread transmission has been influenced by the country's diverse climatic conditions, geo-ecological complexity, and dense population. This, vector-borne diseases (VBDs)-including malaria, dengue, kala azar, Japanese encephalitis, and chikungunya-have long posed additional challenges to public health infrastructure. Intriguingly, prior exposure to these diseases may shape immune responses, potentially conferring cross-protection against multiple

Beyond alienness: An impact-centred framework for plant invasions.

• Native plant invasions can occur within political boundaries under human disturbance and climate change. • Invasion impacts should be assessed by ecological effect, not only by biogeographic origin. • Distinct ecological processes underlying native and alien invasions require differentiated management strategies. • Native invaders reshape local ecosystems through above- and belowground interactions. • Restoring resident biotic resistance may help suppress native invaders with lower invasion risk.

An Exploratory Analysis of Genetic Structure and Introgression in Salmo trutta Populations from Campania Rivers.

The Salmo trutta complex exhibits high genetic and phenotypic diversity due also to the historical climatic events and colonization processes. In Europe, several evolutionary lineages have been identified, including the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In Italy, native Mediterranean trout populations have been threatened by restocking practices involving hatchery-reared fish of Atlantic origin, thus resulting in widespread hybridization and genetic introgression. This study aimed to genetically characterize trout populations from selected river basins of the Campania region (southern Italy) and to

Polyploid frequency decreases with elevation but increases with distance to glacial refugia in the Eastern European Alps.

Polyploidy, the possession of more than two sets of chromosomes in somatic cells, is a major driver in the diversification of flowering plants. Whereas an association between the occurrence of polyploids and latitude suggests a major impact of temperature on their global distribution, it remains unknown how polyploid frequency varies at regional spatial scales, leaving unclear the overall robustness of such relationship and its major determinants. Here, we present a flora-wide dataset of newly sampled, georeferenced ploidy occurrence data for ca. 42,000 samples of angiosperms collected along 1

Wine polyphenols in the prevention of metabolic syndrome: a critical review of multitarget mechanisms and translational perspectives.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a major global public health concern, is characterized by lipid accumulation, glucose dysregulation, and vascular dysfunction. Moderate wine consumption-particularly red wine-has been associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases through mechanisms such as antioxidation, lipid metabolism modulation, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. The "French Paradox" suggests that polyphenols in wine may play a central role in these protective effects. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the chemical composition, content variability, and metabolic regulatory functi

Informing ASR Treatment Practices in a Florida Aquifer through a Human Health Risk Approach.

Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) can augment water supplies and hydrologic flows under varying climatic conditions. However, imposing drinking water regulations on ASR practices, including pre-treatment before injection into the aquifer, remains arguable. Microbial inactivation data-Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, poliovirus type 1 and Cryptosporidium parvum-were used in a human health risk assessment to identify how the storage time of recharged water in the Floridan Aquifer enhances pathogen inactivation, thereby mitigating the human health risks associated with ingestion. We use

Fast expansion and slow contraction of the ITCZ in response to CO2 forcing.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) strongly shapes tropical rainfall and global circulation, yet its response to carbon dioxide (CO2) forcing remains uncertain. Climate models project a long-term narrowing of the ITCZ under warming, but recent decades instead show a poleward expansion linked to eastern tropical Pacific cooling. Using a 30-member ensemble of abruptly quadrupled CO2 experiments, we identify a two-phase evolution: a fast expansion over the first decade, driven by basin-wide relative cooling in the equatorial Pacific, followed by a slow contraction as equatorial warming str

It's about time: small mammal communities and Lyme disease emergence.

Theory predicts that biodiversity changes due to climate warming can mediate the rate of disease emergence. The mechanisms linking biodiversity-disease relationships have been described both theoretically and empirically but remain poorly understood. We investigated the relations between host diversity and abundance and Lyme disease risk in southern Quebec, a region where Lyme disease is rapidly emerging. We found that both the abundance of small mammal hosts and the relative abundance of the tick's natural host, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), influenced measures of disease risk

Past and future spread of the arbovirus vectors Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

The global population at risk from mosquito-borne diseases-including dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika-is expanding in concert with changes in the distribution of two key vectors: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The distribution of these species is largely driven by both human movement and the presence of suitable climate. Using statistical mapping techniques, we show that human movement patterns explain the spread of both species in Europe and the United States following their introduction. We find that the spread of Ae. aegypti is characterized by long distance importations, whi

Response of growth, photosynthetic characteristics and carbon metabolism of Pinus tabuliformis seedlings to long-term moderate warming.

Global climate warming profoundly affects the physiological metabolism and adaptive capacity of forest trees. However, the responses of photosynthetic and carbon metabolic traits in coniferous species to long-term experimental warming simulating future climate scenarios remain poorly understood. In the present study, 3-year-old Pinus tabuliformis seedlings were subjected to ambient air temperature (CK) and elevated temperature (ET, ambient +2 °C) in open-top chambers over two consecutive growing seasons. The growth parameters, photosynthetic gas exchange, photosynthetic pigment contents, photo

A river runs through it: intraspecific variability in hotter-drought-related physiological traits across the Mississippi divide in Pinus taeda L.

Human activities are intensifying heatwaves and droughts, threatening forest ecosystems worldwide. However, understanding intraspecific variation in physiological traits that confer resistance to hotter drought is critical for predicting tree responses to climate change. In Pinus taeda L., long-term geographic isolation across the Mississippi River Valley after the last glacial maximum has resulted in distinct population genetic structures, likely reflecting historical adaptation to contrasting climatic conditions in western and eastern refugia. However, it remains unclear whether contemporary

Incorporating cyclone risk in the design of marine protected and conserved areas as an ecosystem-based adaptation approach.

Marine protected and conserved areas (MPCAs) are promoted as an ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approach to increase community and ecosystem resilience to climate change. However, traditional approaches to MPCA design typically do not consider climate risk or habitat condition under a climate threat. We used the Great Sea Reef (GSR) in Fiji as a case study to develop a land-sea prioritization framework that links modeled sediment runoff from rainfall during extreme cyclone events to the probability of coral reefs being in good condition. We incorporated this information in an MPCA prioritizat

Unravelling Changes in the Pinus radiata Root and Soil Microbiomes as a Function of Aridity.

Increased aridity is emerging as a key impact of climate change in terrestrial ecosystems globally. Forest biomes are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of changing environmental conditions due to their long-lived and sessile nature. Microbiomes have coevolved with plants under changing environmental conditions with shared fitness outcomes. However, both the movement of plants via domestication and rapid pace of environmental change may impact the ability of plants to recruit microbial symbionts that support environmental stress tolerance. This study investigates the effects of aridity on

Integrating climate policies in the sustainability analysis of green chemicals.

New and enhanced processes will not be the only drivers toward a sustainable chemical industry. Implementing climate policies will impact all components of the chemical supply chain over the following decades, making improvements in energy generation, material extraction, or transportation contribute to reducing the overall impacts of chemical technologies. Including this synergistic effect when comparing technologies offers a clearer vision of their future potential and may allow researchers to support their sustainability propositions more strongly.
