The bird of time: cognition and the avian biological clock.

Avian behavior and physiology are embedded in time at many levels of biological organization. Biological clock function in birds is critical for sleep/wake cycles, but may also regulate the acquisition of place memory, learning of song from tutors, social integration, and time-compensated navigation. This relationship has two major implications. First, mechanisms of the circadian clock should be linked in some way to the mechanisms of all these behaviors. How is not yet clear, and evidence that the central clock has effects is piecemeal. Second, selection acting on characters that are linked t

Alzheimer's disease genes and cognition in the nondemented general population.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies have established 11 genes for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). We investigated whether these genes jointly affect cognition in a nondemented population and improve prediction of AD. METHODS: In 5171 nondemented people (age 45-99 years) from the population-based Rotterdam Study, we genotyped APOE-ε4 and single nucleotide polymorphisms from the genes CLU, PICALM, BIN1, CR1, ABCA7, MS4A6A, MS4A4E, CD2AP, EPHA1, and CD33. We constructed a genetic risk score by adding the risk alleles per individual weighted by the reported effect sizes. All people u…

The relationship between physical activity and cognition in older Latinos.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between minutes spent participating in light and moderate/vigorous-intensity physical activity (PA) and cognition in older Latinos, controlling for demographics, chronic health problems, and acculturation. METHOD: A cross-sectional study design was used. Participants were self-identified Latinos, without disability, who had a score less than 14 on a 21-point Mini-Mental State Examination. Participants were recruited from predominantly Latino communities in Chicago at health fairs, senior centers, and community centers. PA w…

The most common clinical sign of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is social interaction impairment, which is associated with communication de … from perception of biological movements, such as body movements or eye gaze, to more complex social cognition processes. Among the impairments that can be described in social perception processing, eye gaze perception is particularly relevant in autism. Gaze abnormalities can now be objectively measured using eye-tracking methodology. In the present work, w …

Cognition and disability in bipolar disorder: lessons from schizophrenia research.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive and functional impairments occur in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BPD), although they are usually less severe and far less studied than in schizophrenia. There may be value in applying approaches developed in schizophrenia research to study cognitive functioning among BPD patients in areas including performance-based disability assessment, cognitive remediation treatments, enhancement of the accuracy of real-world functioning, and studying cognition and disability in relatives. METHODS: We reviewed current research on cognitive and functional disability in BP…

Trait and state perseverative cognition and the cortisol awakening response.

Perseverative cognition (i.e., rumination, worry) may amplify or maintain cortisol stress responses. The present study examined the effects of trait and state perseverative cognition (PC) on the cortisol awakening response (CAR). We hypothesized that trait PC and state (prior day's) PC would be associated with greater CARs. Undergraduates scoring high (N=77) and low (N=42) on trait PC were included. Participants reported worries about upcoming events and ruminations on past events that occurred throughout the day as a measure of state PC. The next morning, saliva samples were collected 0, 30, …

The relationship between aerobic exercise and cognition: is movement medicinal?

Each year approximately 1.5 million individuals sustain traumatic brain injuries often resulting in difficulties in memory and executive function that limit independence. Aerobic exercise not only has been found to impact cardiovascular systems but has also shown benefits to brain function itself and specifically in the domain of memory and learning. Recent evidence is shedding light on the mechanisms possibly impacting cognitive performance following the participation in exercise. Literature has demonstrated increased hemodynamics within the brain, changes in neurotransmitters, and increasing

Computerized cognition assessment during acetylcholinesterase inhibitor treatment in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease assessment scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog) has become a standard clinical trials outcome for cognition, but has been recognized as deficient in areas including coverage of cognitive domains, sensitivity and standardization. Computerized test batteries may address some of these issues. The cognitive drug research computerized assessment (CDR) system is validated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study was designed to further evaluate validity in relation to ADAS-Cog, mini mental state examination (MMSE) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers and psychometri…

Behavior and cognition in corticobasal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD), previously described as Parkinsonian syndromes are also cognitive disorders, and biologically related to the frontotemporal dementia or Pick's disease. PSP and CBD overlap clinically, pathologically and genetically, sharing tau haplotypes and mutations. In our series of CBD/PSP patients with cognitive presentation (n=36), primary progressive aphasia (PPA) was particularly common, but behavioral onset occurred also. CBD or PSP as motor presentations developed significant language disorder in 17/19. The underlying patholog

Do sex differences affect prefrontal cortex associated cognition in schizophrenia?

UNLABELLED: Cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, especially those related to prefrontal cortex (PFC) functions, influence functional outcome. There is evidence for sex differences in cognition in schizophrenia, but the results in the literature are still controversial. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated different modalities of working memory (WM) and executive control (EC), functions that are both associated with the PFC, between sexes in schizophrenic patients and controls. METHODS: We used a battery of neuropsychological tests for assessing auditory, spatial, and visual-matching WM and used a…

[Social cognition in autism. A survey of functional imaging studies].

Autism spectrum disorders (autism, Asperger's syndrome, high-functioning autism) are characterized by a common pattern of marked impairments in social interactions. Deficits have been described in face processing, facial emotion recognition, and social attribution ("theory of mind") or generally speaking in social cognition. Some studies have shown that these impairments are already detectable in early childhood, leading to the assumption that the underlying cause is an early disruption of neuronal development. Accordingly, neuroimaging data have revealed alterations of structure and function …

Introducing MASC: a movie for the assessment of social cognition.

In the present study we introduce a sensitive video-based test for the evaluation of subtle mindreading difficulties: the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). This new mindreading tool involves watching a short film and answering questions referring to the actors' mental states. A group of adults with Asperger syndrome (n = 19) and well-matched control subjects (n = 20) were administered the MASC and three other mindreading tools as part of a broader neuropsychological testing session. Compared to control subjects, Asperger individuals exhibited marked and selective difficultie…

Genes, brain, and cognition: a roadmap for the cognitive scientist.

This paper reviews current progress in genetics in relation to the understanding of human cognition. It is argued that genetics occupies a prominent place in the future of cognitive science, and that cognitive scientists should play an active role in the process. Recent research in genetics and developmental neuroscience is reviewed and argued to provide a new perspective on the timeless questions of innateness and modularity. The special case of the genetic bases of language is further discussed, with the study of developmental dyslexia as an exemplary entry point. This Special Issue puts tog…
