The mediating role of psychological flexibility in the association of autistic-like traits with burnout and depression in medical students during clinical clerkships in Japan: a university-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Burnout and depression among medical students is linked to serious problems that require appropriate solutions. Subthreshold autism traits or autistic-like traits (ALTs) may be possible factors associated with burnout and depression. The effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for burnout and depression has been widely reported. The treatment aims to improve psychological flexibility, a concept indicating engagement in personal value-based behaviors without avoiding uncomfortable private experiences. This study examined whether ALTs were associated with burnout or

From stress to resource: embodied cognitive pathways linking dance competence and psychological resilience.

BACKGROUND: Dance training presents a distinctive stress-resource context in which physical, cognitive, and emotional demands co-exist with potential adaptive benefits. However, the body-mediated cognitive processes through which perceived dance competence relates to psychological resilience remain underexplored. This study examined whether perceived dance competence was associated with psychological resilience through dimensions of embodied cognition among undergraduate dance students. METHODS: A total of 303 Chinese undergraduate dance students completed self-report measures of perceived da

Longer duration of hormonal contraceptive use predicts better cognitive outcomes later in life.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive effects of postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) have been studied extensively, but little is known about the relationship between premenopausal hormone use and cognition. Hormonal contraceptive use vs. nonuse may be a potential factor influencing cognitive processes in midlife. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of modification of hormone milieu through use of hormonal contraception in premenopausal women and midlife cognitive function. METHODS: Subjects were 261 cognitively normal women, aged 40-65 (mean μ=52), enrolled in the Wisconsin Registry for Alzhe

The human striatum is necessary for responding to changes in stimulus relevance.

Various lines of evidence suggest that the striatum is implicated in cognitive flexibility. The neuropsychological evidence has, for the most part, been based on research with patients with Parkinson's disease, which is accompanied by chemical disruption of both the striatum and the prefrontal cortex. The present study examined this issue by testing patients with focal lesions of the striatum on a task measuring two forms of cognitive switching. Patients with striatal, but not frontal lobe lesions, were impaired in switching between concrete sensory stimuli. By contrast, both patient groups we

Hot and Cool Executive Functions in Middle Childhood: Evidence for a Weak but Process-Specific Relationship.

Background: Executive functions (EFs) are cognitive and emotional abilities that underpin goal-directed behavior, decision-making, and problem-solving. EFs can be categorized into two broad types, Hot EFs and Cool EFs, distinguished by their relation to emotional processing. Cool EFs are associated with cognitive control, while Hot EFs involve emotional regulation and decision-making in emotionally charged contexts. EFs contribute to self-regulation, including the ability to adjust behavior in response to feedback. Methods: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Hot (

Cognitive rigidity and BDNF-mediated frontostriatal glutamate neuroadaptations during spontaneous nicotine withdrawal.

Cognitive flexibility is the ability to switch strategic responses adaptively in changing environments. Cognitive rigidity imposed by neural circuit adaptations during nicotine abstinence may foster maladaptive nicotine taking in addicts. We systematically examined the effects of spontaneous withdrawal in mice exposed to either nicotine (6.3 or 18 mg/kg/day) or saline for 14 days on cognitive flexibility using an operant strategy set-shifting task. Because frontostriatal circuits are critical for cognitive flexibility and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) modulates glutamate plasticity

Cognitive Framework for Aircraft Piloting: A Core Cognition Set.

Human factors remain the predominant contributors to aviation accidents, yet the cognitive foundations of pilot performance have not been systematically defined. Existing cognitive frameworks inadequately represent the complex, high-demand environment of flight operations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify a core cognition set for piloting, defined as the minimal group of cognitive modules most consistently related to flight performance, and to examine how these modules are affected by aviation-specific risk factors. A total of 93 studies were included in this review.

Beyond the left-right brain divide: a framework for dual-domain cognitive fluency.

Longstanding distinctions between "verbal" and "mathematical" minds continue to shape educational assessment, curriculum design, and how learners are categorized by perceived cognitive strengths. Yet plenty of evidence from psychology and cognitive neuroscience points to a more unified model of intelligence that refutes the false dichotomy. In this article, I propose dual-domain cognitive fluency (DDCF) as a way to describe how the human mind can move fluidly between words and numbers and derive meaning from both. Building on research in symbolic cognition, executive function, and cognitive fl

Adolescent treadmill exercise enhances hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and improves cognition in autism-modeled rats.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by repetitive behaviors and altered communication abilities. Exercise is a low-cost intervention that could improve cognitive function and improve brain plasticity mechanisms. Here, the valproic acid (VPA) model was utilized to induce ASD-like phenotypes in rodents. Animals were exercised on a treadmill and performance was evaluated on a cognitive flexibility task. Biomarkers related to exercise and plasticity regulation were quantified from the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and skeletal muscle. Exercised

Extracellular Matrix Alterations Due to Early-Life Adversity: Implications for Auditory Learning in Male Sprague-Dawley Rats.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of early childhood chronic stress on the development of the brain extracellular matrix (ECM) and how alterations in the ECM following early-life adversity (ELA) affect auditory learning and cognitive flexibility. ELA was induced through a combination of maternal separation and neonatal isolation in male Sprague-Dawley rats, and the success of the ELA model was assessed behaviorally and biochemically. A cortex-dependent go/no-go task with two phases was used to determine the impact of ELA on auditory learning and cognitive flexibility. The effects of t

Repetitive negative thinking in daily life and functional connectivity among default mode, fronto-parietal, and salience networks.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a maladaptive response to sadness and a transdiagnostic risk-factor. A critical challenge hampering attempts to promote more adaptive responses to sadness is that the between-person characteristics associated with the tendency for RNT remain uncharacterized. From the perspective of the impaired disengagement hypothesis, we examine between-person differences in blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) functional networks underlying cognitive conflict signaling, self-referential thought, and cognitive flexibility, and the association between sadness and RNT in da

Do antipsychotics improve reasoning biases? A review.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how reasoning biases in schizophrenic patients respond to treatment. Patients with schizophrenia, especially those with delusions, show not only cognitive deficits but also "reasoning biases," namely, "jumping to conclusions," reduced belief flexibility, an externalizing attributional style, and an impaired "theory of mind." METHODS: This is a systematic review of 17 longitudinal and cross-sectional studies. RESULTS: "Jumping to conclusions" and reduced "belief flexibility" are most closely related to the severity of delusions, whereas "theory of mind" is better related

Alpha1 adrenergic receptors integrate across multiple separable heart rate variability metrics during alcohol drinking.

Alcohol Use Disorder remains a major challenge and is now a leading cause of death in adults. Biomarkers like heart rate variability (HRV) could give important and novel insights into how pharmacotherapies counteract excessive drive for alcohol, including those promoted by adrenergic receptors (AR). Indeed, α1AR inhibition helps heavy drinkers with greater withdrawal-related mood disruption and arousal, while α1ARs more generally are implicated in cognitive flexibility. To uncover how α1ARs might regulate drinking-related arousal, we used cardiovascular telemetry in adult male and female rats.

Diagnostic precision of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test in assessing cognitive deficits in substance use disorders.

The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a widely used neuropsychological instrument to assess executive functions related to cognitive flexibility and abstract reasoning. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the diagnostic precision of this instrument in substance use disorders. In this study, we aimed at assessing the sensitivity and specificity of the WCST in discriminating the performance of participants with substance use disorder with cognitive deficits and participants from the general population without cognitive deficits. The sample comprised three groups of participants

Longitudinal association between negative life events and depression among Chinese senior high school students: the mediating role of psychological inflexibility and the moderating role of meaning in life.

BACKGROUND: Negative life events are a risk factor for depression among Chinese senior high school students. Psychological inflexibility may mediate this relationship, whereas meaning in life may serve as a buffer. Prior cross-sectional studies lack temporal evidence; this two-wave 3-month time-lagged design preliminarily tests sequential moderated mediation, whereas multiwave data support stronger causal inference. METHODS: A longitudinal survey with 3-month intervals was conducted among 940 senior high school students in Hunan Province, China. The participants completed measures assessing t

Psychological flexibility and pain catastrophizing in endometriosis: Incremental validity and interaction effects in predicting psychosocial outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress and reduced health-related quality of life are common among women with endometriosis, particularly when the condition is accompanied by chronic pain. Psychological flexibility (PF), a core process in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, has emerged as protective in chronic pain, but it is unclear whether it adds explanatory power beyond pain intensity and pain catastrophizing or alters their impact in women with endometriosis. This study addressed these issues by (1) testing the incremental validity of PF in predicting psychological and functional outcomes afte
