Sex/Gender Attribution: When the Penis Makes the Difference.

The present study aimed to replicate Kessler and McKenna's (1978) ethnomethodological study that investigated how an individual attributes g … interpreted and discussed our results from the outlook of evolutionary and cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, concluding that the cultural stereotypes and prejudices that affect gender attribution might not just be a mere cultural product, but rather the consequence of evolved cognitive biases.

A Bayesian Spatiotemporal Model for Joint Estimation of Brain Activation and Connectivity in fMRI Studies.

Task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments play a crucial role in modern data-driven neuroscience research. These studies often aim to understand how external stimuli trigger activation in specific brain regions and to explore functional connectivity patterns among predefined regions, commonly referred to as regions of interest (ROIs). Accurately estimating both brain activation and inter-regional connectivity is challenging due to complex spatiotemporal correlations and low signal-to-noise ratios inherent in fMRI data. This paper introduces a joint spatiotemporal Baye

From microstates to macroscales: A critical review of maximum entropy modeling and energy landscape analysis in functional MRI.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging has revolutionized neuroscience. Traditional analyses focusing on differences in regional activations and pairwise regional interactions (functional connectivity) cannot capture the collective nature of inherently time-variant network dynamics, which would be crucial to better understand the brain function at the systems level. This systematic review on maximum entropy models (MEMs), derived from statistical physics, critically appraises a principled framework that integrates regional activations and pairwise interactions to characterize patterns of dynami

Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a complex, heterogeneous behavioural and cognitive syndrome that seems to originate from disruption of brain development caused by genetic or environmental factors, or both. Dysfunction of dopaminergic neurotransmission contributes to the genesis of psychotic symptoms, but evidence also points to a widespread and variable involvement of other brain areas and circuits. Disturbances of synaptic function might underlie abnormalities of neuronal connectivity that possibly involves interneurons, but the precise nature, location, and timing of these events are uncertain. At present,

The contribution of single case studies to the neuroscience of vision.

Visual neuroscience is concerned with the neurobiological foundations of visual perception, that is, the morphological, physiological, and functional organization of the visual brain and its co-operative partners. One important approach for understanding the functional organization of the visual brain is the study of visual perception from the pathological perspective. The study of patients with focal injury to the visual brain allows conclusions about the representation of visual perceptual functions in the framework of association and dissociation of functions. Selective disorders have been

Traumatic brain injury and neuro-endocrine disruption: medical and psychosocial rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) initiates a cascade of neuromodulatory damage that blurs the distinctions between physical and psychological medicine. Monitoring endocrine function through labs is not part of the medical care algorithm for treatment of TBI, but the clinical symptoms are easily misidentified as they include: depression, fatigue, poor concentration, irritability and a decline in overall cognitive functioning. The reciprocal flow of change between neuroendocrine health and psychosocial health is well established within the field of neuroscience, social psychology, endo

Visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease: theoretical models.

One of the most challenging tasks in neuroscience is to be able to meaningfully connect information across the different levels of investigation, from molecular or structural biology to the resulting behavior and cognition. Visual hallucinations are a frequent occurrence in Parkinson's disease and significantly contribute to the burden of the disease. Because of the widespread pathological processes implicated in visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease, a final common mechanism that explains their manifestation will require an integrative approach, in which consideration is taken across a

Human movement variability, nonlinear dynamics, and pathology: is there a connection?

Fields studying movement generation, including robotics, psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience utilize concepts and tools related to the pervasiveness of variability in biological systems. The concept of variability and the measures for nonlinear dynamics used to evaluate this concept open new vistas for research in movement dysfunction of many types. This review describes innovations in the exploration of variability and their potential importance in understanding human movement. Far from being a source of error, evidence supports the presence of an optimal state of variability for

Tourette's syndrome: update.

Tourette's syndrome is a widely misunderstood chronic disorder that develops in childhood and is usually lifelong. It is characterized by waxing and waning of involuntary motor and phonic tics. The features and differential diagnosis are discussed in this paper. The estimated prevalence rate of Tourette's syndrome, 0.05%, implies that this disorder is not rare. The reasons for diagnostic confusion are outlined, and the genetic and neurotransmitter features discussed. The management of Tourette's syndrome has become more effective with the availability of at least two psychoactive drugs, halope

Alpha rhythm and Alzheimer's disease: Has Hans Berger's dream come true?

In this "centenary" paper, an expert panel revisited Hans Berger's groundbreaking discovery of human restingstate electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms (8-12 Hz) in 1924, his foresight of substantial clinical applications in patients with "senile dementia," and new developments in the field, focusing on Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent cause of dementia in pathological aging. Clinical guidelines issued in 2024 by the US National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) and the European Neuroscience Societies did not endorse routine use of rsEEG biomarkers in the

The diagnosis and management of dyscalculia.

BACKGROUND: Dyscalculia is defined as difficulty acquiring basic arithmetic skills that is not explained by low intelligence or inadequate schooling. About 5% of children in primary schools are affected. Dyscalculia does not improve without treatment. METHODS: In this article, we selectively review publications on dyscalculia from multiple disciplines (medicine, psychology, neuroscience, education/special education). RESULTS: Many children and adolescents with dyscalculia have associated cognitive dysfunction (e.g., impairment of working memory and visuospatial skills), and 20% to 60% of tho

Investigation of the Prolonged Impact of Severe Socioeconomic Hardship and Mother's Perceived Social Support on Neurocognitive Development in Young Children in the Rural Ecuadorian Amazon.

Children living in conditions of severe socioeconomic (SES) hardship are at elevated risk for neurocognitive delays, yet most developmental neuroscience research has focused on children in high-income, Western populations, limiting our understanding of diverse developmental contexts. This study examined maternal perceived social support as a potential buffer against the stressors associated with SES hardship on child neurocognitive development in a longitudinal sample of Indigenous families in the rural Ecuadorian Amazon. Twenty-eight children (M age = 28.02 months at T1; 57.6 months at T2) pa

Dynamics of frontal cortex functional connectivity during cognitive tasks: insights from fNIRS analysis in the Dual n-back Paradigm.

The human brain operates as a complex network, and understanding its functional connectivity is a core challenge in neuroscience. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a non-invasive, portable method for studying brain activity and connectivity, providing valuable insights into the brain's network dynamics. In this study, we used fNIRS to examine the functional connectivity of the human brain during the Dual n-back task, a cognitive challenge that varies in memory load (0-back, 1-back, and 2-back). Data were collected from 24 channels in the frontal cortex and pre-processed with

Scalp-to-cortex distance of left primary motor cortex and its computational head model: Implications for personalized neuromodulation.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is increasingly used as a probe of function and therapeutics in experimental neuroscience and neurorehabilitation. Scalp-to-cortex distance (SCD), as a key parameter, has been shown to potentially impact on the electric field. This study aimed to examine the region-specific SCD and its relationship with cognitive function in the context of age-related brain atrophy. METHODS: We analyzed the SCD and cortical thickness (CT) of left primary motor cortex (M1) in 164 cognitively normal (CN) adults and 43 dementia patients drawn from the Open Access

Précis of neuroconstructivism: how the brain constructs cognition.

Neuroconstructivism: How the Brain Constructs Cognition proposes a unifying framework for the study of cognitive development that brings together (1) constructivism (which views development as the progressive elaboration of increasingly complex structures), (2) cognitive neuroscience (which aims to understand the neural mechanisms underlying behavior), and (3) computational modeling (which proposes formal and explicit specifications of information processing). The guiding principle of our approach is context dependence, within and (in contrast to Marr [1982]) between levels of organization. We…

Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded: Metatheoretical Framework for Conceptualizing Dysfunctional Processes and Psychopathology.

Complex psychopathology, particularly when associated with adverse developmental experiences and complex trauma, involves multiple cognitive, affective, behavioral, interpersonal, and neurobiological processes that may be difficult to organize within single-theoretical or symptom-based models. The present paper introduces the Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded (TCM-XP), a transdiagnostic and metatheoretical framework developed to organize these processes within a developmental and integrative perspective. The TCM-XP comprises seven interrelated domains: Adverse and Dysfunctional Experie
