Using waste from sewage systems, particularly human excreta, could save resources and increase soil fertility, contributing to nutrient management. However, because of the pathogenic content in human feces, this resource can pose health risks to farmers and consumers. Therefore, this work analyzed the behavior of the microorganisms: Escherichia coli ATCC13706 and human adenovirus (HAdV-2) in the soil and the internal part of the plant tissue during the vegetative stage after applying spiked composted human feces as biofertilizer. In a greenhouse, we simulated the application of the biofertiliz

Biofiltration technology based on microbial degradation and assimilation is used for the removal of malodorous compounds, such as ammonia. Microbes that degrade malodorous and/or organic substances are involved in composting and are retained after composting; therefore, mature composts can serve as an ideal candidate for a biofilter medium. In this study, we focused on different types of raw compost materials, as these are important factors determining the bacterial community profile and the chemical component of the compost. Therefore, bacterial community profiles, the abundance of the bacter

Municipal solid waste compost can be used to cropland as soil amendment to supply nutrients and improve soil physical properties. But long-term application of municipal solid waste (MSW) compost may result in accumulation of toxic metals in amended soil. Phytoremediation, especially phytoextraction, is a novel, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approach that uses metal-accumulating plants to concentrate and remove metals from contaminated soils. Ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was applied to metal-contaminated soil to increase the mobility and phytoavailability of metals in soil,

The impact of Fenton-ultrasound treatment on the production of polyphenols and humic acid (HA) during corn stalk composting was investigated by analyzing the potential for microbial assimilation of polysaccharides in corn stalks to generate polyphenols using a13C-glucose tracer. The results showed that Fenton-ultrasound treatment promoted the decomposition of lignocellulose and increased the HA content, degree of polymerization (DP), and humification index (HI). The primary factor could be attributed to Fenton-ultrasound treatment-induced enhanced the abundance of lignocellulose-degrading micr

Emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) from kitchen waste composting plants causes significant environmental issues. This paper characterized the emission profiles of VOCs and GHGs from KW composting with different operating parameters. Quantitative results showed that emission intensities spanned 7.4-folds (VOCs: 196-1456 μg·m-3) to 8.2-folds (GHGs: 79-647 mg·m-3) between C1 (R1M1A1) and C9 (R3M2A3). Seven categories of VOCs were identified, with the 'Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene' (BTEX) group as the most abundant chemical family. Most VOCs (exc

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in manure aerobic composting are a potential environmental pollutant. Therefore, reducing the abundance of ARGs is crucial. The effects of adding three-dimensional printed bulking agents (3DBAs) on ARGs in aerobic composting of swine manure were investigated in this study. Compared with the control group, 3DBAs with different addition dosages can greatest reduce the total ARGs by 5.98%, tetracycline resistance genes by 14.02%, macrolide resistance genes by 9.65%, and sulfonamide resistance genes by 20.59%. By further combining physicochemical parameters, host

In mixed systems (pasture plus TMR), it is essential to provide the cows with good housing conditions at times of supplementation during confinement. However, given that there are different types of confinement for high-producing cows in pastoral-based systems, it is necessary to determine how such confinement conditions can affect their welfare. The aim of this study was to determine if the type of confinement (compost barn (CB) versus outdoor soil-bedded (OD)) used in mixed systems affects the welfare of dairy cows through behavioral and biochemical indicators. Holstein cows (n = 32) calving

One of the most important sources of pollution caused by metals, if not the most important, is mining. Metal pollution is covert, persistent and irreversible. For this reason, soil metal pollution has become a severe problem in many parts of the world. The aim of this study was to observe which combination of amendments (compost + biochar or technosol + biochar) combined with Brassica juncea L. was best at reducing the assimilable contents of Cu, and which also increased to a lesser extent the contents of other metals (Ni, Pb, Zn) found in these amendments. We also studied the phytoremediation

Scallop hepatopancreas, fishery waste, contains relatively high levels of Cd and organic nitrogen compounds, the latter of which represent a fertilizer. In this study, raw scallop hepatopancreas tissue was thermally treated with sawdust and red loam in the presence of an iron catalyst to produce compost-like materials (CLMs). Two CLM samples were prepared by varying the content of raw scallop hepatopancreas tissue: 46 wt.% for CLM-1 and 18 wt.% for CLM-2. Mixtures of control soil (CTL) and CLMs (CLM content: 10 and 25 wt.%) were examined for the growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to evalua

In this work, four surfactant-like humic acids (HAs) obtained from garden lignocellulose wastes and kitchen food wastes mixed with garden-lignocellulose wastes, both before and after composting, were tested for surfactant properties and the ability to solubilize tetrachloroethene (PCE). The waste-derived HAs showed good surfactant properties, lowering the water surface tension from 74 mN m(-1) to 45.4 +/- 4.4 mN m(-1), with a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 1.54 +/- 1.68 g L(-1), which is lower than many synthetic ionic surfactants. CMC was affected by both waste origin and composting

Attempts to bio-enrich fungal biomass with an essential trace elements to produce dietary supplements have some tradition and an example is selenium. Lithium salts have medical applications, but safer forms are sought after, and lithiated foods and food supplements may be an alternative. This study evaluated the lithiation of white Agaricus bisporus mushrooms using commercial compost fortified with LiNO3 and investigated the effects on co-accumulation of trace elements. The fortifications at levels of 1.0, 5.0, 10, 50 and 100 mg·kg-1 dw, resulted in corresponding median increases in mushroom L

Microplastics (MP) have aroused increasing concern due to the negative environmental impact. However, the impact of bio/non-biodegradable MPs on the sludge composting process has not been thoroughly investigated. This study examined antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factors (VFs), and microbial community functions in sludge compost with the application of polylactic acid (PLA) and polypropylene (PP), using metagenomic sequencing. The findings indicated that both types of MPs could extend the thermophilic phase, enhance microbial activity, and inhibit the formation of humic acids. C

During storage, infected potato tubers by Fusarium species leads to significant losses. Searching natural-based alternatives to chemical fungicides for the control of tuber dry rot pathogens is becoming essential. Nine Aspergillus spp. (A. niger, A. terreus, A. flavus, and Aspergillus sp.) isolates, recovered from soil and compost samples, were explored and evaluated for their ability to suppress Fusarium sambucinum the main causal agent of potato tuber dry rot disease in Tunisia. All conidial suspensions of Aspergillus spp. tested and their cell-free culture filtrates had significantly inhibi

Soil remediation mitigates hazards from contaminants but could deprive soils of initial biota and enzymes. Historically contaminated acidic soil from Arnoldstein (Austria) and calcareous soil from Meza (Slovenia) were washed with 30 and 100 mmol kg-1 ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) to remove 78 and 60% of Pb as a main pollutant. Remediation of the Arnoldstein soil decreased urease activity and increased β-glucosidase activity, measured in a 15-week experiment. The dehydrogenase activity and microbial gene abundances were not significantly impeded compared to the original soil. Conversely, t
