BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Use of condoms is one of the main methods sexually active persons may choose to prevent infection with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Little is known about patterns of condom use among women in the United States. We provide a conceptualization of patterns of condom use and factors associated with these patterns.
GOAL OF THIS STUDY: To examine patterns of condom use and associated characteristics among sexually active, never-married women in the United States.
STUDY DESIGN: Analysis of data from the 1988 National Survey …

A total of 56 male spinal cord injury patients on condom catheter drainage was studied prospectively within 6 months of the injuries for 5 years. Low bladder pressures (filling maximum 35 cm. water and voiding maximum 70 cm. water) were ascertained with video-urodynamics. External sphincterotomy was performed when necessary for detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia. Yearly upper tract imaging, serum creatinine levels and urine cultures were obtained. All patients had colonized urine (asymptomatic) during the entire study period. No patient sustained deterioration of the urinary tract on imaging or by

Patients (N = 71) from a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in an urban setting were surveyed to determine their knowledge about acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and attitudes toward condom use. Overall knowledge scores were high with a mean score of 22 on the 28-item true-false questionnaire. No statistical significance was found between AIDS-knowledge scores and condom-use behavior. The majority of subjects or their partners had STD symptoms and multiple partners within a 6-month period. Thirty percent of the respondents reported using condoms at least 25% of the time. In re…

INTRODUCTION: Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common sexual dysfunction in men, negatively affecting quality of life and psychological well-being. Local anesthetic agents, such as lidocaine and benzocaine, which help manage PE by reducing glans penis sensitivity, are widely used in the treatment of PE. However, comparative data on the efficacy of different topical agents are limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate and compare the effects of EMLA cream (lidocaine and prilocaine), lidocaine spray, and benzocaine condoms on intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) in patients d…

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the differences and similarities in knowledge, attitude, beliefs, myths, and misconceptions; and the various high-risk behavioral factors that influence the rate of infectivity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS among African American men in urban and rural communities of Mississippi.
METHODS: A cross-sectional sample survey was conducted on 466 African American men in 2 sites between 2005 and 2007. With the main outcome variables of knowledge, attitude/feelings, behavior/practices, and potentials for behavior change, we administered a 64-item, ethnically sensi

Many women who are at risk for HIV do not regularly use condoms, particularly with their main partners. In this paper we examine factors related to self-efficacy for condom use with main and other partners and self-efficacy for birth control in 2864 women interviewed in five urban high-risk communities. Limited social and economic resources, dependence on a main partner, and risk factors, including exchanging sex for money or drugs and binge drinking, were found to be negatively related to self-efficacy. Segmentation analysis identified groups of women with low self-efficacy who should be the …

The theory of reasoned action (TRA) provides useful information when designing health education interventions. In this study, 703 heterosexual STD clinic clients responded to a TRA-based survey. With steady partners, social norms and attitudes toward condom use were significant predictors of intention for both men and women. The interaction of attitude and norm increased prediction for men (R = .64, p < 0.001) and women (R = .70, p < 0.001). With casual partners, attitude was a predictor for men and social norm was a predictor for women. Prior use of condoms increased prediction for men (R = .…

INTRODUCTION: Despite the effectiveness of female condoms (FCs) in preventing sexually transmitted infections, their use remains low. University students, at high risk for unsafe sex, need targeted interventions. This study assessed knowledge and utilization among female undergraduates to inform policies and strategies for improving accessibility and uptake in higher education institutions.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 246 undergraduate female students at Makerere University in March-April 2023. Participants were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collect…

Homeless youth become pregnant or involved in pregnancies at high rates. There are many ways by which unintended pregnancies may be prevented, including the use of condoms and other contraceptives. However, there is a dearth of research regarding contraceptive use among this vulnerable youth population, and especially through lenses that consider homeless youths' diverse gender identities, expressions, and sexualities. This study qualitatively explores homeless youths' attitudes and experiences regarding condom and other contraceptive use. Data were obtained from interviews with 30 youth exper…

Recent scientific evidence demonstrates that many young men commonly resist condom use with their female sex partners and that both alcohol intoxication and a history of sexual aggression may increase the risk of condom use resistance (CUR). Using a community sample of heterosexual male non-problem drinkers with elevated sexual risk (N = 311), this alcohol administration study examined the direct and indirect effects of intoxication and sexual aggression history on men's CUR intentions through a sexual risk analogue. State impulsivity, CUR-related attitudes, and CUR-related self-efficacy were

This study tested the research hypothesis that men's errors using condoms would be associated with having multiple sex partners. Specifically, men engaging in sex with three or more women were compared with those having sex with two or fewer women. Recruitment (N = 271) occurred in a publicly funded sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic located in a metropolitan area of the Southern United States. All men were clinically diagnosed with an STD. They completed a self-reported questionnaire (using a 3-month recall period). Those reporting sex with men were excluded from the analysis. About on…

Safe sex skills training often teach women to be assertive in condom use negotiations. However, it has been suggested that assertiveness training may be inappropriate for women who lack power in their sexual relationship. Our qualitative study of 62 women attending a family planning clinic explored various communication styles they used to introduce and negotiate female condom use in their sexual relationships. We further examined how different introduction and negotiation styles were related to actual use of the device. The device was introduced using a direct, semidirect, indirect, or nonver

BACKGROUND: Consensus regarding treatment of coronary aneurysms is lacking. The condom technique has been described as a simple technique to obtain coronary vascular occlusion in different clinical settings. We report a case of percutaneous occlusion of a large aneurysm by the condom technique.
CASE SUMMARY: An 83-year-old male with prior ischaemic heart disease presented to the emergency room after a fall with a thoracic trauma. The patient underwent extensive clinical investigation. The use of cardiac computed tomography revealed a very large right coronary artery (RCA) aneurysm. Assessing

This study aims to address the gap in understanding condom use (CU) behavior in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking community in Belgium) by applying a mixed methods approach, integrating both quantitative and qualitative data. Utilizing a large-scale survey of over 14,000 participants and 11 in-depth interviews, the study explores key factors influencing CU, including (amongst others) relationship status, attitudes toward condoms, and STI testing. Quantitative findings highlight significant predictors such as the type of partner (casual vs. steady), STI testing behaviors, and negative attitudes towa…

The male condom is the most cost-effective method for prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), yet in high-burden countries, promotion of its use remains difficult to achieve, especially among high-risk individuals. This review reports on women's perspectives of male condom use and identifies outcome measures that will assist in understanding barriers to male condom use in a South African setting. The Boolean search method was used to retrieve literature, from which 18 studies met the inclusion criteria. The use of the male condom was generally low and inconsistent.

Condom lubricants have been found to be a new type of evidence to investigate and analyze in sexual assaults and rape cases. Casework studies highlighted two main types of trace evidence supports collected from the victim and send to forensic laboratories: cotton swabs and victims' underwear. If cotton swabs have been used in most of the recent published research papers, the underwear and the textile effects on the recovery of condom lubricants are under investigated although such studies are very important for the interpretation of the evidence, as highlighted in the Regina v. Andrew Nicholas
