Although penicillin still remains highly effective for syphilis, concerns have been raised that current regimens may be inadequate for the treatment of early syphilis. We report the failure of benzathine penicillin in the treatment of secondary syphilis. Extensive tracing of sexual contact history failed to identify sources of possible reinfection; therefore, we believe that this case represents a treatment failure and an ensuing relapse of secondary syphilis.

In a prospective study the prevalence of syphilis amongst a group of pregnant Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong was found to be 3.4%. No cases of gonorrhoea, genital warts or genital ulcers were found in the same group of patients. The implications of these results are discussed and the importance of adequate screening, treatment, contact tracing and health education amongst this group are emphasised.

OBJECTIVE: Recruitment and retention present major challenges to longitudinal research in maternal and child health, yet there are few insights into optimal strategies that can be employed in low-resource settings. Following prior participation in a longitudinal study following women living with HIV through pregnancy and breastfeeding in Cape Town, women were re-contacted at least 18 months after the last study contact and were invited to attend an additional follow-up visit. We describe lessons learnt and offer recommendations for a multiphase recruitment approach.

On 31 May 2013, the first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in Italy was laboratory confirmed in a previously healthy adult man, who developed pneumonia with moderate respiratory distress after returning from a holiday in Jordan. Two secondary cases were identified through contact tracing, among family members and colleagues who had not previously travelled abroad. Both secondary cases developed mild illness. All three patients recovered fully.

In an outbreak of hepatitis B virus infection in a south Wales village 31 cases were identified over 16 months. Spread of the infection was by sharing needles and by sexual contact.
