Use of the timeout ribbon procedure during community-based instruction.

Involvement in community-based instruction can be adversely affected when students engage in behavior that interferes with participation in instruction. A multiple probe across settings design with an embedded reversal was used to investigate the effectiveness of the nonseclusionary timeout ribbon procedure for two middle-school students with moderate mental retardation in community and school settings. An athletic wristband served as the timeout ribbon, which functioned as the stimulus for the availability of reinforcement. When the student was wearing the wristband, he could earn reinforcers

The Effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention on Dental Anxiety during Pulpotomy in 7-10 Year-Old Children: A Clinical Trial.

Objectives: Dental anxiety is a common phenomenon experienced by children in the dental setting. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral interventions in managing this anxiety. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a cognitive-behavioral psychologic intervention on dental anxiety in children. Materials and Methods: A total of thirty children, aged 7-10 years, underwent prophylaxis and fluoride therapy. The baseline anxiety levels of the children were determined using the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDAS). The interventi

Hostility prevents the tragedy of the commons in metapopulation with asymmetric migration: A lesson from queenless ants.

A colony of the queenless ant species, Pristomyrmex punctatus, can broadly be seen as consisting of small-body sized worker ants and relatively larger body-sized cheater ants. Hence, in the presence of intercolony migration, a set of constituent colonies act as a metapopulation exclusively composed of cooperators and defectors. Such a setup facilitates an evolutionary game-theoretic replication-selection model of population dynamics of the ants in a metapopulation. Using the model, we analytically probe the effects of territoriality induced hostility. Such hostility in the ant metapopulation p

Decoding spatiotemporal fibrotic and cellular immunosuppression of therapeutic T cells in live pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is profoundly immunosuppressive. To help define this behavior, we present integrated experimental and computational frameworks to elucidate therapeutic T cell dynamics. Through the development of TME-CARTographer (TME-CART), a computational pipeline integrating high-dimensional data, graph theory, behavior analysis, and deep learning (DL), we present quantitative insights on 4D T cell-TME interactions in live PDA tumors. Mapping physical immunosuppression demonstrates that collagen fiber architectures direct migration while concomitantly limiting off-axis

Ankylosing spondylitis prediction using fuzzy K-nearest neighbor classifier assisted by modified JAYA optimizer.

The diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can be complex, necessitating a comprehensive assessment of medical history, clinical symptoms, and radiological evidence. This multidimensional approach can exacerbate the clinical burden and increase the likelihood of diagnostic inaccuracies, which may result in delayed or overlooked cases. Consequently, supplementary diagnostic techniques for AS have become a focal point in clinical research. This study introduces an enhanced optimization algorithm, SCJAYA, which incorporates salp swarm foraging behavior with cooperative predation strategies into

Physical and chemical properties of DMP 504, a polyalkylammonium-based bile acid sequestrant.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the physicochemical properties of DMP 504 and lay the foundation for formulation development. … of cholic acid to DMP 504 was unconventional, and indicated that the system was exhibiting positive cooperative behavior. Modeling the binding curve for a system exhibiting cooperative behavior indicated a maximum binding capacity of DMP 504 for cholic acid in phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.0) of 4.9 mumol/mg, and a cooperativity value, P, of 2.2 implying that bindin …

Spatial Statistics-Based Image Analysis Methods for the Study of Vascular Morphogenesis.

Several studies are available addressing the mechanisms of vascular morphogenesis in order to unravel how cooperative cell behavior can follow from the underlying, genetically regulated behavior of endothelial cells and from cell-to-cell and cell-to-extracellular matrix interactions. From the morphological standpoint several aspects of the process are of interest. They include the way the pattern of vessels fills the available tissue space and how the network grows during the angiogenic process, namely how a main trunk divides into smaller branches, and how branching occurs at different distan

Allosteric communication in class A β-lactamases occurs via cooperative coupling of loop dynamics.

Understanding allostery in enzymes and tools to identify it offer promising alternative strategies to inhibitor development. Through a combination of equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we identify allosteric effects and communication pathways in two prototypical class A β-lactamases, TEM-1 and KPC-2, which are important determinants of antibiotic resistance. The nonequilibrium simulations reveal pathways of communication operating over distances of 30 Å or more. Propagation of the signal occurs through cooperative coupling of loop dynamics. Notably, 50% or more of c

Violent offenses associated with co-occurring substance use and mental health problems: evidence from CJDATS.

The present study examines the relationship between substance use, mental health problems, and violence in a sample of offenders released from prison and referred to substance abuse treatment programs. Data from 34 sites (n = 1,349) in a federally funded cooperative, the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJDATS), were analyzed. Among parolees referred to substance abuse treatment, self-reports for the six-month period before the arrest resulting in their incarceration revealed frequent problems with both substance use and mental health. For most offenders with substance use proble

Solving the freeloaders paradox: Genetic associations and frequency-dependent selection in the evolution of cooperation among nonrelatives.

One of the enduring problems in the study of social evolution has been to understand how cooperation can be maintained in the presence of freeloaders, individuals that take advantage of the more cooperative members of groups they are eager to join. The freeloader problem has been particularly troublesome when groups consist of nonrelatives, and no inclusive fitness benefits accrue to individuals that contribute more heavily to communal activities. These theoretical difficulties, however, are not mirrored by the numerous examples of cooperative or even altruistic behaviors exhibited by groups o

Does parental mediation of media influence child outcomes? A meta-analysis on media time, aggression, substance use, and sexual behavior.

The current study examined how parental mediation of media (restrictive mediation, active mediation, and coviewing) influenced child outcomes. Three meta-analyses, 1 for each type of mediation, were conducted on a total of 57 studies. Each analysis assessed the effectiveness of parental mediation on 4 pertinent child outcomes: media use, aggression, substance use, and sexual behavior. The overall results indicated small, but significant relationships between child outcomes and restrictive mediation (r+ = -.06), and coviewing (r+ = .09). Overall active mediation was nonsignificant, though activ

The Implementation Challenge and the Learning Health System for SCI Initiative.

The paper introduces the special issue by linking the International Spinal Cord Injury (InSCI) Community Survey study to the Learning Health System for SCI Initiative (LHS-SCI). The LHS-SCI was designed to respond to the implementation challenge of bringing about policy reform in light of the targeted policy recommendations of World Health Organization's International Perspectives on SCI report as well as the call for action of WHO's Global Disability Action Plan. The paper reviews the components of LHS-SCI relevant to internationally comparable information, a theory of change to guide for act

Successful international collaboration improves family donation conversations resulting in increased organ donation.

INTRODUCTION: Australian donation leaders recognized that to increase organ donation outcomes, health professionals conducting family donation conversations (FDCs) required support and specialist training. An international training institute with programs based on proven results was engaged to create and implement a customized training program to influence change in FDC practice and culture. The goal was to increase donation rates by developing and implementing a customized, self-sustaining training program to enhance FDC practices of health professionals. Other goals included providing traini

Adaptations for social cognition in the primate brain.

Studies of the factors affecting reproductive success in group-living monkeys have traditionally focused on competitive traits, like the acquisition of high dominance rank. Recent research, however, indicates that the ability to form cooperative social bonds has an equally strong effect on fitness. Two implications follow. First, strong social bonds make individuals' fitness interdependent and the 'free-rider' problem disappears. Second, individuals must make adaptive choices that balance competition and cooperation-often with the same partners. The proximate mechanisms underlying these behavi

The physiology of cooperative breeding in a rare social canid; sex, suppression and pseudopregnancy in female Ethiopian wolves.

Ethiopian wolves, Canis simensis, differ from other cooperatively breeding canids in that they combine intense sociality with solitary foraging, making them a suitable species in which to study the physiology of cooperative breeding. The reproductive physiology of twenty wild female Ethiopian wolves (eleven dominant and nine subordinate) in Ethiopia's Bale Mountains National Park was studied non-invasively through the extraction and assaying of estradiol, progesterone and glucocorticoids in collected fecal samples using enzyme and radioimmunoassays. All dominant females showed increased estrad

The evolution of antisocial punishment in optional public goods games.

Cooperation, where one individual incurs a cost to help another, is a fundamental building block of the natural world and human society. It has been suggested that costly punishment can promote the evolution of cooperation, with the threat of punishment deterring free-riders. Recent experiments, however, have revealed the existence of 'antisocial' punishment, where non-cooperators punish cooperators. While various theoretical models find that punishment can promote the evolution of cooperation, these models a priori exclude the possibility of antisocial punishment. Here we extend the standard

Sociopsychological factors affecting the human response to noise exposure.

Community noise is reported to be the most often mentioned undesirable neighborhood condition in a recent U.S. Census survey. Understanding community response to noise involves the measurement of a number of complex acoustic and nonacoustic variables and establishing the chain of relationships between physical exposure, perception, annoyance, and acceptability responses and finally complaint behavior. The perceived loudness of a noise is the most important acoustic parameter influencing annoyance and complaints, and the simple dBA unit can be used to integrate spectral characteristics of compl
