Antibiotics in corals of the South China Sea: Occurrence, distribution, bioaccumulation, and considerable role of coral mucus.

Manmade antibiotics are emerging organic pollutants widely detected in the marine environment. In this study, 14 out of 19 target antibiotics were detected in corals collected from coastal and offshore regions in the South China Sea. The average total antibiotic concentrations (∑19ABs) in the two regions were similar: 28 ng/g for coastal corals and 31 ng/g for offshore corals, based on dry tissue weight (dw). Fluoroquinolones (FQs) were predominant antibiotics in the coastal corals (mean ∑FQs: 18 ng/g dw), while sulfonamides (SAs) predominated in the offshore corals (mean ∑SAs: 23 ng/g dw). Ho

Thermal plasticity of a freshwater cnidarian holobiont: detection of trans-generational effects in asexually reproducing hosts and symbionts.

Understanding factors affecting the susceptibility of organisms to thermal stress is of enormous interest in light of our rapidly changing climate. When adaptation is limited, thermal acclimation and deacclimation abilities of organisms are critical for population persistence through a period of thermal stress. Holobionts (hosts plus associated symbionts) are key components of various ecosystems, such as coral reefs, yet the contributions of their two partners to holobiont thermal plasticity are poorly understood. Here, we tested thermal plasticity of the freshwater cnidarian Hydra viridissima…

Skeletal structure and progression of growth anomalies in Porites australiensis in Okinawa, Japan.

Growth anomalies (GAs), one of the diseases recently reported for scleractinian corals, are characterized by an abnormal skeletal structure and reduced zooxanthella density. The pathological characteristics of GAs were studied in colonies of Porites australiensis on a reef in Kayo, Okinawa, Japan. Corallites in the GA region lost the skeletal architecture characteristic of P. australiensis, and polyp density had decreased in the GAs due to enlargement of both calices and the coenosteum. The gross productivity of isolated GA samples was lower than in healthy samples and decreased to almost 0 wi

Insights Into the Structural Features, Codon Usage Patterns, and Phylogenetic Analysis in Neoniphon argenteus (Teleostei: Holocentriformes) Based on Complete Mitochondrial Genome.

Neoniphon argenteus, a widely distributed nocturnal coral reef fish in the family Holocentridae, plays an important role in maintaining coral reef ecosystem health, yet its phylogenetic position remains poorly resolved. To bridge this gap, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome of a specimen from the South China Sea to characterize its structural features, codon usage patterns, and phylogenetic relationships. The 16,569 bp mitogenome (GenBank: PP190474.1) encodes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and two non-coding regions, exhibiting a distinct A + T bi

Effects of SCUBA bubbles on counts of roving piscivores in a large remote marine protected area.

This study examined the effects of SCUBA bubbles on fish counts in underwater visual surveys conducted in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM). Specifically, paired fish surveys were conducted at each survey site, utilizing two different gear types: open-circuit SCUBA (OC) and closed-circuit rebreather (CCR). Bubble exhaust released from the OC equipment is a potential source of bias for in-situ fish observations, as the associated audio and visual disturbances could either attract or repel fishes depending on whether their behavior is more driven by curiosity or caution. The

Biochemical and histopathological effects of the stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) venom in rats.

The Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) is one of the most dangerous venomous fish known, and has caused occasional human fatalities. The present study was designed to examine some of the pathological effects of the venom from this fish in Sprague Dawley rats. Crude venom was extracted from venom glands of the dorsal spines of stonefish specimens collected from coral reefs in the Gulf of Aqaba (in the northeastern branch of the Red Sea). The rats were given intramuscular injections of the venom and acute toxicity and effect on selected serum marker enzymes as well as normal architecture of vi…

Large outbreaks of ciguatera after consumption of brown marbled grouper.

Brown marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) is an apex predator from coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. All five published case series of ciguatera after consumption of brown marbled grouper were reviewed to characterize the types, severity and chronicity of ciguatera symptoms associated with its consumption. Three of these case series were from large outbreaks affecting over 100-200 subjects who had eaten this reef fish served at banquets. Affected subjects generally developed a combination of gastrointestinal, neurological and, less commonly, cardiovascular symptoms. Gastrointesti…

High-throughput phenotyping reveals nutrient availability alters thermal performance in two Symbiodiniaceae species.

Nutrient sharing between corals and Symbiodiniaceae is crucial to the survival of coral reefs. However, optimal nutrient conditions for different Symbiodiniaceae species remains unclear, partly due to a lack of high-throughput methods for phenotyping Symbiodiniaceae. We developed a high-throughput phenotyping method for Symbiodiniaceae to grow monocultures of Cladocopium proliferum and Durusdinium trenchii in 96-well plates. We utilised spectrophotometry, light-induced fluorescence transient-fast repetition rate fluorometry, and flow cytometry to characterise physiological responses over 11 da…

Metabolomic variability of four macroalgal species of the genus Lobophora using diverse approaches.

Among comparative metabolomic studies used in marine sciences, only few of them are dedicated to macroalgae despite their ecological importance in marine ecosystems. Therefore, experimental data are needed to assess the scopes and limitations of different metabolomic techniques applied to macroalgal models. Species of the genus Lobophora belong to marine brown algae (Family: Dictyotaceae) and are widely distributed, especially in tropical coral reefs. The species richness of this genus has only been unveiled recently and it includes species of diverse morphologies and habitats, with some speci…

Patch design principles for oyster reef restoration: Lessons from fish habitat use in natural remnant systems.

Over 85% of oyster reef habitat has been lost or significantly degraded globally due to anthropogenic climate change, urbanization, and pollution. These systems provide critical habitat for fish communities, yet the relationship between oyster reef patch characteristics and fish assemblages remains poorly understood, limiting the effectiveness of restoration efforts. To address this gap, we conducted an extensive 3-year survey (2019-2021) of fish assemblages on natural remnant oyster reefs across three estuaries in temperate New South Wales, Australia, using unbaited remote underwater video sy

Natural coral recovery despite negative population growth.

Demographic processes that ensure the recovery and resilience of marine populations are critical as climate change sends an increasing proportion on a trajectory of decline. Yet for some populations, recovery potential remains high. We conducted annual monitoring over 9 years (2012-2020) to assess the recovery of coral populations belonging to the genus Pocillopora. These populations experienced a catastrophic collapse following a severe typhoon in 2009. From the start of the monitoring period, high initial recruitment led to the establishment of a juvenile population that rapidly transitioned

Large-scale pesticide monitoring across Great Barrier Reef catchments--Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring, Modelling and Reporting Program.

The transport and potential toxicity of pesticides in Queensland (QLD) catchments from agricultural areas is a key concern for the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). In 2009, a pesticide monitoring program was established as part of the Australian and QLD Governments' Reef Plan (2009). Samples were collected at eight End of System sites (above the tidal zone) and three sub-catchment sites. At least two pesticides were detected at every site including insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and the Reef Plan's (2009) five priority photosystem II (PSII) herbicides (diuron, atrazine, hexazinone, tebuthiuron

Methylome Profiling of a Deuterostome Invertebrate Using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT).

DNA methylation is crucial for genome regulation and provides key insights into the interaction between genetics and environmental factors, offering valuable perspectives for ecological research. However, knowledge of DNA methylation patterns in nonmodel invertebrates remains limited. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by conducting the first methylome profiling of the Pacific crown-of-thorns seastar (CoTS; Acanthaster cf. solaris), a coral-eating species that aggravates the decline of Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) we generated long-read sequences…

Intravascular Lithotripsy of Aortic and Renal Lesions as a Therapeutic Tool for Pickering Syndrome: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 73-year-old woman admitted with Pickering syndrome, a life-threatening condition characterized by recurrent flash pulmonary edema secondary to severe renovascular disease. Computed tomography angiography demonstrated an atrophic left kidney, a heavily calcified visceral aorta with a coral-reef morphology, and a near-occlusive stenosis of the right renal artery. Urgent endovascular treatment was performed with intravascular lithotripsy for plaque modification of the suprarenal aorta and the right renal artery, followed by renal artery stenting. The patient showed prompt

No effect of short-term exposure to ocean acidification on individual-level variation in behaviour and susceptibility to predation in a Great Barrier Reef damselfish.

Ocean acidification, caused by rising carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, has been reported to negatively impact a wide variety of behaviours in fishes, including activity, exploration, and predator avoidance. These effects have been documented at the population level, but many animal species naturally show large and repeatable individual-level differences in behaviour. How environmental stressors, such as ocean acidification, affect behavioural variation at the individual level remains largely unknown but is vital in understanding adaptation given natural selection operates on variation a

[Neurologic manifestations of ciguatera. 3 cases with a neurophysiologic study and examination of one nerve biopsy].

Ciguatera is the commonest form of poisoning resulting from eating fish in the tropics. It has been recognised since the 15th century. The disease is due to the formation of ciguatoxin by a dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus toxicus, loosely attached to algae growing on coral reefs. The toxin, which is harmless to the fish, is ingested by small herbivorous fish and passes up the food chain as these are eaten by carnivores. The toxic effects include gastroenteritis, itching of the skin, peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system dysfunction. Though most cases are mild, occasionally the disease…
