BACKGROUND: Corpus callosum agenesis (CCA) is generally diagnosed in utero. Outcome appears to be better if the malformation is isolated. The aim of this study, which is the first one with a long (10 years) and standardized follow up, was to report cognitive abilities of children with isolated CCA diagnosed prenatally.
METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 17 children. Clinical examinations, neuropsychological tests were performed each year. School achievement and personal and familial data were collected.
RESULTS: Twelve children completed the entire follow up. One child was finally considere…

Tubulinopathies are a group of neurologic disorders caused by mutations in tubulin-related genes, characterized by a broad spectrum of cortical malformations. These disorders are typically associated with a thin or normal corpus callosum, while a thick corpus callosum has been rarely documented. This study reports the first known case of a homozygous insertion variant in the TUBGCP2 gene associated with a thick corpus callosum. A 2-year-old male of Turkish origin presenting with microcephaly, developmental delay, distinctive facial features, and hypertonia. Brain MRI revealed cortical malforma…

Hydrocephalus is a frequently encountered finding on routine brain imaging. A common underlying cause is aqueductal stenosis, which is typically diagnosed in the pediatric population. However, approximately 10% of aqueductal stenosis cases are identified in adults. Posthydrocephalus corpus callosum damage has been reported primarily in patients undergoing decompressive surgery for chronic hydrocephalus such as aqueductal stenosis. This case report emphasizes the importance of recognizing these entities on imaging to avoid misdiagnosis and prevent unnecessary investigations or interventions.

The corpus callosum (CC) is the major interhemispheric commissure and its abnormalities include agenesis, hypoplasia, and hyperplasia. The CC anomalies are typically related to other central nervous system (CNS) or extra-CNS malformations. The antenatal diagnosis of complete CC agenesis is easy after mid-trimester by ultrasound (US) even in the axial plane. The non-visualization of cavum septum pellucidum and colpocephaly are critical signs in the axial view. More subtle findings (i.e., hypoplasia and partial agenesis) might also be recognized antenatally. In this review, the focus was given o…

BACKGROUND: Corpus callosum abnormality (CCA) can lead to epilepsy, moderate severe neurologic or mental retardation. The prognosis of CCA is closely related to genetic etiology. However, copy number variations (CNVs) associated with fetal CCA are still limited and need to be further identified. Only a few scattered cases have been reported to diagnose CCA by whole exome sequencing (WES).
METHODS: Karyotyping analysis, copy number variation sequencing (CNV-seq), chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) and WES were parallelly performed for prenatal diagnosis of 19 CCA cases.
RESULTS: The total …

Acute ischemia of the corpus callosum (CC) is not a well-known feature in patients with acute hydrocephalus. Herein, we describe a case with acute CC infarction due to another rare entity; transient obstructive hydrocephalus. A 66-year-old male was admitted with sudden onset right-sided hemiparesia. CT demonstrated a hematoma on the left basal ganglia with extension to all ventricles. The following day, the patient's neurological status progressed to coma and developed bilateral pyramidal signs. MRI demonstrated obstructive hydrocephalus and acute diffuse infarction accompanied by elevation of…

INTRODUCTION: Infarctions of the corpus callosum are rare vascular events. It is relatively immune to vascular insult because of its rich vascular supply from anterior and posterior circulations of brain.
OBJECTIVE: Report of 3 patients with largely diffuse acute corpus callosum infarction.
METHODS: 3 patients with largely diffuse acute corpus callosum infarction were studied and each of these 3 patients had 3 different aetiologies.
RESULTS: The 3 different aetiologies of largely diffuse acute corpus callosum infarction were cardioembolism, tuberculous arteritis and takayasu arteritis.

Isolated corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCD) is a congenital malformation which occurs during early development of the brain. In this study, we aimed to identify and describe its consequences beyond the lack of callosal fibres, on the morphology, microstructure and asymmetries of the main white matter bundles with diffusion imaging and fibre tractography. Seven children aged between 9 and 13 years old and seven age- and gender-matched control children were studied. First, we focused on bundles within the mesial region of the cerebral hemispheres: the corpus callosum, Probst bundles and cingulum w…

We investigated systematic differences in corpus callosum morphology in periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH). Differences in corpus callosum mid-sagittal area and subregional area changes were measured using an automated software-based method. Heterotopic gray matter deposits were automatically labeled and compared with corpus callosum changes. The spatial pattern of corpus callosum changes were interpreted in the context of the characteristic anterior-posterior development of the corpus callosum in healthy individuals. Individuals with periventricular nodular heterotopia were imaged at …

Autism is a severe developmental disorder whose neurological basis is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to identify the shape differences of the corpus callosum between patients with autism and control subjects. Anatomical landmarks were collected from midsagittal magnetic resonance images of 25 patients and 18 controls. Euclidean distance matrix analysis and thin-plate spline analyses were used to examine the landmark forms. Point-by-point shape comparison was performed both globally and locally. A new local shape comparison scheme was proposed which compared each part of the shape i…

5p deletion syndrome commonly known as cri du chat is well described in affected neonates with catlike cry and hypotonia. Karyotyping will usually show a deletion of the short arm of one chromosome 5 with variable breakpoints. Only a few cases have been reported prenatally, and the fetal form of the syndrome has not been clearly individualised. We report a new case of 5p deletion syndrome diagnosed prenatally in association with Dandy-Walker syndrome and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Other brain anomalies have been reported previously, but this unusual association suggests the use of a spec…

We report a case of pituitary duplication in a neonate girl whose magnetic resonance (MR) images showed unusual findings of hypogenesis of the corpus callosum and oral dermoid. Pituitary duplication is an extremely rare malformation, with only a few previously reported cases. It occurs most commonly in association with complicated midline and skull base anomalies. We present a case of this malformation with special emphasis on the hypogenesis of splenium of the corpus callosum and oral dermoid.

The corpus callosum is the most important cerebral commissure allowing axonal fibres to cross the midline. Corpus callosum agenesis is an important condition in man that can reveal numerous genetic syndromes. The corpus callosum develops from the commissural plate, a dorsal region of the telencephalon. Then, axons growing from pyramidal neurons of cortical layer III extend and cross the midline. In experimental models, it is possible to decipher two conditions in which the development of the corpus callosum is impaired. The first condition is characterized by an impairment of the formation of …
