Salivary Cortisone as a Potential Alternative to Cortisol in Periodontitis Severity Assessment.

Salivary cortisol is widely used to investigate stress-periodontitis interactions, but its measurement is affected by methodological limitations. Cortisone, the predominant salivary glucocorticoid, may offer analytical advantages, yet its role in periodontitis remains unexplored. This study evaluated salivary cortisone in relation to periodontal disease severity and compared its performance with cortisol. Sixty-seven periodontitis patients were classified as Stage I/II (n = 32) or Stage III/IV (n = 35). A comprehensive periodontal examination was performed, including FMPS, FMBS, PPD, CAL, BoP,…

Daily salivary cortisol and cortisone rhythm in patients with adrenal incidentaloma.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Impaired cortisol rhythm is a characteristic feature of Cushing's Syndrome, nevertheless late night salivary cortisol (LNSC) is not suitable to detect subclinical hypercortisolism in patients with adrenal incidentaloma (AI). We studied daily salivary cortisol (F) and cortisone (E) rhythm in patients with AI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six saliva samples were collected from awakening to night in 106 patients with AI and 40 controls. F and E were measured with LC-MS/MS and daily F exposure was calculated with the area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: Patients with serum cortisol…

Apparent cortisone reductase deficiency: a rare cause of hyperandrogenemia and hypercortisolism.

Sphingosine kinases (Sphk1/2 EC 2.7.1.91) are responsible for synthesis of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and for regulation of the bioactive sphingolipids homeostasis. Sphingosine-1-phosphate can act as a potent messenger in an autocrine/paracrine manner through five specific G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) S1P1-5. This sphingolipid is involved in the mechanism of transcription, mitochondrial function, neuronal viability and degeneration. Until now the involvement of Sphk1/2 and sphingolipid alterations in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unknown. Recent studies have indicated the role of s

Azathioprine with cortisone in treatment of hearing loss in only hearing ear.

A sudden or progressive hearing loss in the only hearing ear is an otologic emergency, in which therapeutic possibilities are limited. We de … provement in PTA was insignificant (4.4 dB). In 5 patients with vertigo it was improved in 3 cases. Cortisone alone or with combination of cyclophosphamide or ciclosporine was not effective in our hands.

The effect of cortisone on the eruption rate of root-resected incisors in the rat.

It is generally thought that the periodontal ligament plays a key--perhaps even exclusive--role in tooth eruption. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that the fundus also may contribute to the process. To this end the effect of cortisone on the eruption rate of root-resected mandibular incisors was examined in male albino rats. Half of the animals received daily injections of cortisone; the other half were given normal saline. Impeded and unimpeded eruption rates were measured at 3-day intervals and tested for between- and among-means differences by repeated-measures analysi…

[Treatment of Bell's palsy with cortisone preparations administered into the stylomastoid foramen].

The authors discuss some problems connected with the aetiology and pathogenesis of Bell's palsy. Attention is called to conservative treatment of the palsy with particular reference to administration of cortisone preparations injected into the stylomastoid foramen. Good results were obtained in 90% of 205 cases treated in this way. The method provides good results with small doses of the drug and can be used in outpatient practice.

[Intrathecal cortison injection in lumbar disc problems (author's transl)].

Intrathecal instillation of corticosteroid was used in treatment of 188 patients with persistent sciatica or lumbar pain caused by disc hernia or osteochondrosis and recurrent sciatica or lumbar pain after disc operation. 88 of 122 own patients were followed up. Indication, mechanism of steroid action, technic, complications and results are discussed. According to the good results in part of the patients, still after years, the authors believe, that intrathecal corticosteroid administration is a further useful method of conservative treatment of degenerative lumbar disc affections. This therap
