Antileukemic activity of selected natural products in Taiwan.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antileukemic activity of six chemical classes of pure compounds present in commonly used medicinal plants in Taiwan--such as the genus Plantago. Studies were conducted on a series of human leukemia and lymphoma cell lines. Results showed that water soluble compounds (aucubin, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid and vanillic acid) exhibited a weak antileukemic activity (IC50: 26-56 microg/ml, SI: 2-11). On the other hand, water insoluble compounds such as triterpenoids (oleanolic acid and ursolic acid), monoterpene (lina

Evaluation of anti-oxidant treatments in an in vitro model of alkaptonuric ochronosis.

OBJECTIVES: Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare genetic disease associated with deficient homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase activity in the liver. This leads to the accumulation of homogentisic acid (HGA) and its oxidized/polymerized products in connective tissues, which in turn become characterized by the presence of melanin-like pigments (ochronosis). Since at present, further studies are necessary to support the use of drugs for the treatment of AKU, we investigated the effects of various anti-oxidants in counteracting melanin-like pigmentation and oxidative stress related to HGA and its metabolites.

Mediterranean Shrub Species as a Source of Biomolecules against Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases are associated with oxidative stress, due to an imbalance in the oxidation-reduction reactions at the cellular level. Various treatments are available to treat these diseases, although they often do not cure them and have many adverse effects. Therefore, it is necessary to find complementary and/or alternative drugs that replace current treatments with fewer side effects. It has been demonstrated that natural products derived from plants, specifically phenolic compounds, have a great capacity to suppress oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals thus, they may be

Efficient biotechnological production of N-(Hydroxycinnamoyl)tyramines by utilizing plant-derived enzymes in a bench-scale bioreactor with in situ product precipitation.

The efficient recovery of plant polyphenolic bioactives is facing technological challenges of low concentrations and complex mixtures starting from plant tissue. In the search of alternatives, we developed a high-yield biotechnological production process for hydroxycinnamic acid-tyramine conjugates in Escherichia coli by converting soluble substrates into insoluble products. A recombinant plant-enzyme cascade was established by co-expression of Arabidopsis thaliana 4-coumarate:CoA ligase and Solanum tuberosum hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA:tyramine N-(hydroxycinnamoyl)transferase. We overcame initial en

Physicochemical properties and biological safety of ferulic acid-grafted gelatin as a versatile food emulsifier: Studies in zebrafish and C. elegans.

Ferulic acid-grafted gelatin (Fg) was synthesized through the reaction with carbodiimide and evaluated for its potential as a clean-label, multifunctional food emulsifier. FTIR, UV-Vis, and NMR structural analyses demonstrated that amide linkages were effectively established between ferulic acid and gelatin. The grafting significantly enhanced the interfacial performance and the physicochemical characteristics. Visual and microscopic evaluations further confirmed that Fg formed stable and fine emulsions with reduced droplet size and improved dispersion stability compared to native gelatin. The
