Quantifying crime associated with drug use among a large cohort of sanctioned offenders in England and Wales.

AIM: To assess the relationship between testing positive for opiates and/or cocaine and prior offending. METHODS: 139,925 persons (107,573 men) identified from a saliva test for opiate and cocaine metabolites following arrest in England and Wales, 1 April 2005-31 March 2009, were case-linked with 2-year recorded offending history. The prior offending rate, accounting for estimated incarceration periods, was calculated by: drug-test outcome; gender; four main crime categories (acquisitive, non-acquisitive, serious acquisitive, and non-serious acquisitive) and 16 sub-categories. Rate ratio (RR)…

HIV and the gut microbiota, partners in crime: breaking the vicious cycle to unearth new therapeutic targets.

The gut microbiota plays a key role in health and immune system education and surveillance. The delicate balance between microbial growth and containment is controlled by the immune system. However, this balance is disrupted in cases of chronic viral infections such as HIV. This virus is capable of drastically altering the immune system and gastrointestinal environment leading to significant changes to the gut microbiota and mucosal permeability resulting in microbial translocation from the gut into the peripheral blood. The changes made locally in the gut have far-reaching consequences on the

The importance of an anthropological scene of crime investigation in the case of burnt remains in vehicles: 3 case studies.

Inspection of a crime scene is a crucial step in forensic medicine, and even the methods taught by forensic anthropology are essential. Whereas a thorough inspection can provide crucial information, an approximate inspection can be useless or even harmful. This study reports 3 cases of burnt bodies found inside vehicles between 2006 and 2009 in the outskirts of Milan (Italy). In all 3 cases, the victim was killed by gunshot, and the body was burnt in the vehicle to destroy signs of skeletal injury and prevent identification. In every case, the assistance of forensic anthropologists was request…

The time of the crime: cognitively induced tonic arousal suppression when lying in a free recall context.

Previous research has shown that suspects in real-life interviews do not display stereotypical signs of nervous behaviours, even though they may be experiencing high detection anxiety. We hypothesised that these suspects may have experienced cognitive load when lying and that this cognitive load reduced their tonic arousal, which suppressed signs of nervousness. We conducted two experiments to test this hypothesis. Tonic electrodermal arousal and blink rate were examined during task-induced (Experiment 1) and deception-induced cognitive load (Experiment 2). Both increased cognitive difficulty

Memory bias for faces that are perceived as hostile by crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder.

The present study tested, and found support for, the hypotheses that crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder have: (i) a general memory impairment for faces; and (ii) a memory bias for faces that they perceive as hostile, even when these faces are not arranged to show any hostile face expressions. It is suggested that crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder perform worse on recognition memory due to impaired concentration, and that they allocate their limited attentional resources to the detection of hostility in others in order to avoid being victimized again. …

Complex insomnia: insomnia and sleep-disordered breathing in a consecutive series of crime victims with nightmares and PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance in posttraumatic stress disorder is very common. However, no previous posttraumatic stress disorder studies systematically examined sleep breathing disturbances, which might influence nightmares, insomnia, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. METHODS: Forty-four consecutive crime victims with nightmares and insomnia underwent standard polysomnography coupled with a nasal pressure transducer to measure airflow limitation diagnostic of obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome. RESULTS: Forty of 44 participants tested positive on objectiv…

The insanity defense for sex offenders: jury decisions after repeal of Wisconsin's Sex Crimes Law.

After repeal of a Wisconsin statute permitting hospitalization of defendants convicted of sexual crimes, the authors noted an increase in the percentage of sex offenders among persons hospitalized after being found not guilty by reason of insanity. They also found that a greater proportion of hospitalized sex offenders than of other kinds of offenders were diagnosed as nonpsychotic. Illustrating with three case studies, the authors argue that despite trends away from the therapeutic model of corrections, juries continue to make decisions that provide treatment for defendants perceived to need …

Summary of an eleven-country study of socio-legal measures to combat drug abuse and related crime.

In a comparative study of a group of experimental and control subjects in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Japan, Jordan, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States of America (State of New York), and of the results of independent studies conducted in Sweden and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, a rather close association was found to exist between drug abuse, criminal behaviour and social attitudes to such problems. Both drug abuse and the socio-legal systems varied greatly in the countries involved. No correlation was found between the level of foreseen or actual

Radiological evidence in legal contexts: forensic versus clinical reporting in cases involving living victims of violent crime.

PURPOSE: Forensic medical examinations are essential for evaluating victims of potential crimes. Radiology, particularly computed tomography (CT), has become a valuable tool in postmortem and clinical forensic contexts. However, when assessing living victims, forensic evaluations often face challenges due to reliance on clinical records, which primarily focus on medical treatment rather than forensic interpretation. Clinical radiology (CR) reports frequently omit forensically relevant findings. In contrast, forensic radiological (FR) reports may provide more relevant insights into such details…

Associations between food retailer availability and violent crime by neighborhood SES in Chicago, IL: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Violent crime continues to be a public health issue in the U.S. Prior research has associated greater availability of certain food retailers (i.e., convenience stores, liquor stores, dollar stores) with higher violent crime rates at the community level. There is limited understanding of how these retailers, and others, are associated with violent crime across the spectrum of neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES). To further explore this topic, this ecological study examined associations between food retailer availability and violent crime rate in Chicago, IL by neighborhood SES. …

Desistance from crime following substance use treatment: the role of treatment retention, social network and self-control.

BACKGROUND: Reductions in crime are often reported following substance use treatment. We explore the relationship between desistance from crime, treatment type, treatment retention and positive changes in known risk factors for crime. METHODS: We used data from the NorComt-study; a longitudinal study of substance users (n = 341) enrolled in comprehensive treatment in Norway (2012-2015). At treatment initiation (T0) and 1 year later (T1), we collected self-reported data on criminal involvement, treatment, substance use, social network and self-control. We calculated adjusted odds ratios (aOR) …

ER Ca2+ release and store-operated Ca2+ entry - partners in crime or independent actors in oncogenic transformation?

Ca2+ is a pleiotropic messenger that controls life and death decisions from fertilisation until death. Cellular Ca2+ handling mechanisms show plasticity and are remodelled throughout life to meet the changing needs of the cell. In turn, as the demands on a cell alter, for example through a change in its niche environment or its functional requirements, Ca2+ handling systems may be targeted to sustain the remodelled cellular state. Nowhere is this more apparent than in cancer. Oncogenic transformation is a multi-stage process during which normal cells become progressively differentiated towards

Re-engagement centered on "truth" seeking: A grounded psychological model of sustained attention to crime-news short videos.

Short-video feeds often introduce users to crime news incidentally, yet some unfolding cases become objects of repeated return. Existing research explains crime-content appeal, incidental exposure, platform continuance, and information seeking, but less clearly how an initially encountered case becomes a sustained, case-specific object of attention across sources and updates. This study develops an event-centered psychological account of that transition. Semi-structured group and individual interviews with 29 Chinese short-video users (21 adults and eight adolescents) were analyzed using const…

A novel person-reported measure of safety-seeking behaviours: a preliminary study in older victims of community crime.

BACKGROUND: Community crime against older people is of increasing concern but the relationship between safety-seeking behaviours and continued psychological distress has not been examined. As existing assessment tools have limited validity, we aimed to investigate this by designing a novel person-reported safety-seeking behaviour measure (PRSBM) and conducting preliminary evaluation of its wider applicability. METHOD: We collected mixed-methods data from n=100 initially distressed older victims at 3 months post-crime, using the PRSBM. This asked older victims how often they engaged in six beh…

The public health impacts of supervised injection sites in Canada: Moving beyond social acceptability and impacts on crime.

Canada has been a pioneer in adopting a harm reduction approach to address risks associated with drug use for people who inject drugs. Today … ly focusing on assessing pre-implementation social acceptability and post-implementation impacts on crime, faces important methodological limitations. The following commentary reviews the existing literature and makes recommendations for future public health research on the impacts of supervised injection sites.

Careful When You Click? How the Dark Triad of Personality Can Influence the Likelihood of Online Crime Victimization.

Cybercrime is a growing problem, with increasing numbers of people reporting they have been a victim. However, the literature has tended to focus on the characteristics of the perpetrator and has often neglected to examine how the individual differences of victims may have an impact. This paper investigates how the Dark Triad - Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy - may increase the chances of being a victim of online crime. To do this, the Cyber Routine Activities Theory was applied, which suggests victimization is a result of two things: 1) a user's routine online activity which may…

Geocoding child sexual abuse: An explorative analysis on journey to crime and to victimization from French police data.

BACKGROUND: For several years, the link between mobility, human behavior and crime have highlighted by criminologists. Nevertheless, due to the difficulty of compiling sensitive geographical data, the spatial behavior of extrafamilial child abusers has received little empirical attention. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to explore the spatial mobility of victims and offenders of extrafamilial child abuse under the lens of the crime mobility triangle methodology. The main objective is to analyze the distribution of the spatial mobility patterns and determine which factors are associate…

Effects of School-Based Risk and Protective Factors on Treatment Success Among Youth Adjudicated of a Sexual Crime.

Youth with sexually problematic behaviors are impacted by the reciprocal interplay between individual characteristics and the key social and ecological systems in which they are embedded. The paucity of research on protective factors mitigating risks within various socioecological systems is of concern, as the school is one such system that has been overlooked. This study retroactively investigated probation files among youth who were adjudicated of a sexual crime (N = 85) to determine how school-level variables are associated with treatment completion. A sequential logistical regression model…
