Microbiota of Chickens and Their Environment in Commercial Production.

Chickens in commercial production are subjected to constant interaction with their environment, including the exchange of microbiota. In this review, we therefore focused on microbiota composition in different niches along the whole line of chicken production. We included a comparison of microbiota of intact eggshells, eggshell waste from hatcheries, bedding, drinking water, feed, litter, poultry house air and chicken skin, trachea, crop, small intestine, and cecum. Such a comparison showed the most frequent interactions and allowed for the identification of microbiota members that are the mos

Screening and optimization of salt-alkali tolerant phosphate-solubilizing Enterobacter sp. AD8: applications in soybean growth promotion and saline-alkali soil remediation.

Soil salinization severely limits crop growth, nutrient availability and phosphorus use efficiency. Combined saline-alkali stress and phosphorus deficiency greatly restrict soybean productivity. Applying salt-alkali tolerant phosphate-solubilizing bacteria is an effective biological strategy to improve crop performance and soil fertility. In this study, 15 strains were isolated from local saline-alkali soil. After functional screening, Enterobacter sp. AD8 showed excellent phosphate-solubilizing (264.21 mg/L soluble P) and IAA-producing (58.09 µg/mL) capacities. Its optimal culture conditions

Yeasts with potential to be used as microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture in future.

Sustainability in agricultural production has emerged as one of the most significant concerns in the 21st Century, which recommends use of less chemical inputs having adverse effects on soil health and environment. The sustainability in the crop production system can be achieved by using beneficial soil microorganisms as microbial inoculants. A large number of studies have been carried out on bacteria and multicellular fungi which are used currently as microbial inoculants in sustainable agriculture. Yeasts, which are unicellular fungi are traditionally used for producing beverages and foods l…

Biomimetic materials for sustainable microbial pesticide formulations.

Microbial pesticides offer a sustainable alternative for crop protection due to their target specificity, low resistance risk, and environmental compatibility. However, their practical application is hindered by poor environmental tolerance to ultraviolet radiation, high temperature, and desiccation, as well as short shelf life and inadequate foliar retention. Traditional formulations such as wettable powders and suspension concentrates often provide limited protection or controlled release. Biomimetic materials inspired by natural structures including biofilms, plant cell walls, and mussel ad

Engineering the Maize Root Microbiome: A Rapid MoClo Toolkit and Identification of Potential Bacterial Chassis for Studying Plant-Microbe Interactions.

Sustainably enhancing crop production is a global necessity to meet the escalating demand for staple crops while sustainably managing their associated carbon/nitrogen inputs. Leveraging plant-associated microbiomes is a promising avenue for addressing this demand. However, studying these communities and engineering them for sustainable enhancement of crop production have remained a challenge due to limited genetic tools and methods. In this work, we detail the development of the Maize Root Microbiome ToolKit (MRMTK), a rapid Modular Cloning (MoClo) toolkit that only takes 2.5 h to generate des…

Antimicrobial resistance and its association with tolerance to heavy metals in agriculture production.

Antimicrobial resistance is a recognized public health challenge that since its emergence limits the therapeutic options available to veterinarians and clinicians alike, when treatment is warranted. This development is further compounded by the paucity of new antibiotics. The agri-food industry benefits from the availability of antimicrobial compounds for food-animal production and crop protection. Nonetheless, their improper use can result in the selection for bacteria that are phenotypically resistant to these compounds. Another class of agents used in agriculture includes various cationic m

The impact of nutrient deficiency on the structure of soil microbial communities within a double-cropping system.

In the North China Plain, it is common for farmers to regularly clear crop residues from their fields. The prevalent practice of fertilization in this region continues to depend heavily on the use of compound fertilizers. Howere , long-term single fertilizer application has become the norm in the present agricultural production, which not only destroys the crop rotation system but also negatively affects the soil environment and crop yields. The current knowledge of how nutrient deficits affect the microbial community structure in double-cropping systems is still limited. To clarify the specif

Mapping of Land Cover with Optical Images, Supervised Algorithms, and Google Earth Engine.

Crops and ecosystems constantly change, and risks are derived from heavy rains, hurricanes, droughts, human activities, climate change, etc. This has caused additional damages with economic and social impacts. Natural phenomena have caused the loss of crop areas, which endangers food security, destruction of the habitat of species of flora and fauna, and flooding of populations, among others. To help in the solution, it is necessary to develop strategies that maximize agricultural production as well as reduce land wear, environmental impact, and contamination of water resources. The generation

Development of a GIS-based indicator for environmental pesticide exposure and its application to a Belgian case-control study on bladder cancer.

We developed two indicators to assess the exposure of residents to agricultural pesticide use and applied it in a case-control study on bladder cancer in the province of Limburg, Belgium. The first indicator used a distance-weighted measure of crop area for specified crops (fruit trees, fruit bushes and vegetables). The second indicator used a distance-weighted measure of pesticide use. We used information at three scale levels: (a) information at individual's level, such as distance to crop fields; (b) information at the level of the municipality, such as time-series of crop area; and (c) reg

Interface of Climate and Environmental Change on Food Systems-A Report from the "Agriculture and Diet: Value Added for Nutrition, Translation, and Adaptation in a Global Ecology" (ADVANTAGE) Project Working Group 3.

As the climate changes, investigation at the intersection of climate and food systems is critical to understand broader impacts on human nutrition and health. This work seeks to 1) identify reciprocal interactions of climate and environmental change (CEC) and food systems, 2) illuminate research gaps in CEC interactions with food systems, and 3) identify paths to respond to and mitigate the impact of CEC on food systems. We discuss CEC and food system interactions via 4 pathways. Food systems are influenced by CEC through shifting climate normals and altered instances of extreme events. The ph
