NETosis in Long-Term Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Its Link to Coronary Artery Disease.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil extracellular traps NETs have been linked to glucose and the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). NETs also play a role in vascular inflammation and the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). The role of NETs in CAD progression in patients with long-term T1DM is unclear. We aimed to 1) investigate whether levels of circulating NETs markers were elevated in long-term T1DM subjects compared to controls, and 2) explore whether levels of NETs were related to the presence of CAD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 102 patients with > 45 years of T1DM and 75 age-matched

Robust neutralization of emerging JN.1 subvariants by the updated JN.1 vaccine: rationale for catch-up booster recommendations in high-risk individuals.

The updated JN.1 monovalent vaccine (MoV) for the 2024-2025 season elicits strong cross-neutralizing activity against subsequently circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants in 2025, including the recently emerging NB.1.8.1, with titer increases comparable to those against the vaccine strain JN.1. The immune response induced by the JN.1 MoV was markedly stronger than that induced by XBB.1.5 MoV in the previous season, both against the vaccine strain and post-vaccine variant (all P < 0.001). These results likely reflect improved background immunity to circulating variants and support the use of catch-up b

[Radioimmunoassay for the pyridinoline cross-linked carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (1CTP)--some basic aspects of the RIA kit and clinical evaluation in various bone diseases].

A radioimmunoassay for circulating levels of the pyridinoline cross-linked carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (1CTP) was developed and can be available as a kit on a commercial base. Using the kits, we evaluated basically and clinically the assay. The assayed values were reproducible and the assay can detect as low as 0.5 ng/ml of 1CTP. In healthy volunteers, circulating level was high under age 24 and over age 46. In patients with bone metastasis, serum levels elevated even in its early stage and correlated well with clinical status. In other bone diseases, such as primary hyperp

An approach for modeling cross-immunity of two strains, with application to variants of Bartonella in terms of genetic similarity.

We developed a two-strain susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model that provides a framework for inferring the cross-immunity between two strains of a bacterial species in the host population with discretely sampled co-infection time-series data. Moreover, the model accounts for seasonality in host reproduction. We illustrate an approach using a dataset describing co-infections by several strains of bacteria circulating within a population of cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus). Bartonella strains were clustered into three genetically close groups, between which the divergence is correspondent t

Regional distribution of blood flow during proximal aortic cross-clamping: an experimental study using coloured microspheres.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of thoracic aortic cross-clamping on blood perfusion of the brain, spinal cord, heart, muscular tissue and visceral organs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nine pigs underwent 30 min cross-clamping of the descending thoracic aorta. Multiple coloured microspheres (15.0 microm +/- 0.1) were infused into the left ventricle before and during aortic cross-clamping (XC) and after declamping (DC). Tissue samples were analysed by spectrophotometry. RESULTS: Blood perfusion of the middle and lower segments of the spinal cord was significantly reduced during aortic XC. Perfu

Brief communication: targeted serum proteomics in postpartum South African women living with and without HIV, correlations with anthropometry and adiposity.

Postpartum adiposity is associated with long-term risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which may be influenced by HIV infection. We investigated cross-sectional correlations between postpartum adiposity measures, and circulating proteins linked to CVD in women living with and without HIV. Irrespective of HIV status, adiposity was positively correlated with fatty acid binding protein 4, leptin and galectin 9; and negatively correlated with insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 and V-set immunoglobulin domain containing 2. The link between adiposity and CVD-linked circulating proteins un

Incomplete circle of Willis is associated with a higher incidence of neurologic events during carotid eversion endarterectomy without shunting.

OBJECTIVE: A complete circle of Willis (CoW) is considered an important collateral network to maintain blood flow during cross-clamping in carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an incomplete CoW with isolated middle cerebral artery (iMCA) on immediate neurologic events (INEs) after CEA. METHODS: We prospectively collected the clinical data and outcomes of 902 patients who underwent CEA under general anesthesia between 2013 and 2015. All patients had preoperative computed tomography angiography of the extracranial and intracranial cerebral circulatio

Autoimmune encephalitis associated with antibodies against α-enolase sequestrated from degenerating retina in retinitis pigmentosa.

BACKGROUND: Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited retinal degenerations resulting in photoreceptor cell dysfunction, death, and eventually vision loss. It can be a manifestation of Usher syndrome and has been linked with autoimmune retinopathy and systemic autoimmune diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 70-year-old woman with retinitis pigmentosa and Usher syndrome who presented with autoimmune encephalitis. Laboratory tests revealed the presence of α-enolase antibodies in the patient's serum and cerebrospinal fluid, which cross-reacted with the human brain and retina t

Local versus systemic immunoreactivity to collagen and the collage-like region of C1q in rheumatoid arthritis and SLE.

In this paper we discuss recent data concerning immunoreactivity on the one hand to the cartilage derived molecule type II collagen (CII) and on the other hand to the complement factor C1q, in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). By using the ELISPOT method we have been able to show that production of antibodies to CII and to C1q is common in inflamed joints but not in the periphery of RA-patients, whereas production to C1q is commonly seen in the circulation of active SLE patients. Previously an immunological cross-reactivity has been described between these two p

An Apple a Day? The Hypothesis of Cross-Kingdom Gene Regulation by Plant miRNAs in Mammals and Its Controversies.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. In plants, miRNAs are involved in environmental responses and can be transferred to other species to mediate cross-kingdom regulation of gene expression. This mechanism has recently been proposed in mammals, yet evidence remains scarce and inconsistent. Multiple studies have shown that a fraction of plant-derived miRNAs (pmiRNAs) present in food resist processing, cooking, and digestion. Evidence suggests that dietary-derived pmiRNAs might be absorbed in the gastrointestinal

Cross-reactive antibody and T-cell responses after influenza virus infection in community-dwelling older adults.

UNLABELLED: Seasonal influenza virus infection is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in older adults. The high mutation rate of influenza virus gives rise to new variants that are antigenically different, thereby evading pre-existing immune responses. In addition, due to aging of the immune system, older adults have diminished responses to infections with novel antigens. Here, we investigated longitudinal influenza virus-specific humoral and cellular responses in a cohort of community-dwelling older adults after influenza virus infection in the 2014/15 flu season in the Netherla

Hendra virus: research progress on a bat-borne threat lurking at the human-animal interface.

Hendra virus (HeV) is a highly lethal zoonotic henipavirus that has caused recurrent cross-species spillover events in Australia since 1994. Its capacity for cross-species spillover, together with its tropism for vascular endothelial and neural tissues, makes HeV important to veterinary medicine and public health. Flying foxes are the natural reservoir hosts, and horses act as intermediate and amplifying hosts through which all confirmed human infections have occurred. Detection of antibodies and viral RNA from related henipaviruses in Southeast Asian bats indicates regional henipavirus divers

Biocompatible narrow size nanohydrogels for drug delivery.

Biodegradable polymers have gained attention for controlled drug delivery due to their potential for sustained release. Herein, a novel series of cross-linked, narrow size nanohydrogels (NHGs) with tunable sizes (20-500 nm), devoid of toxicity, and suitable for diverse biological applications were developed. These NHGs are synthesized via a thermo-responsive self-assembly process followed by confined polymerization. Ester cross-linkers were introduced into the polymeric backbone to enhance biodegradability. The NHGs comprise ideal candidates for drug delivery due to their long circulation in b

Breaking the fortress: a mechanistic review of meningitis-causing bacteria breaching tactics in blood brain barrier.

The blood-brain barrier is a physiological protective barrier around blood vessels in the brain. It prevents most bacteria and harmful substances from entering the brain through the blood. However, when bacterial meningitis occurs, bacteria enter the brain either from the circulation or by direct invasion from neighbouring structures, causing an inflammatory response that in severe cases may lead to death. High morbidity and mortality are prominent features of the disease. Many pathogenic bacteria can break through the blood-brain barrier and cause meningitis, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae,

Posterior circulation cerebral infarcts associated with repair of thoracic aortic disruption using partial left heart bypass.

BACKGROUND: Partial left heart bypass is widely used in the repair of traumatic aortic disruptions. We recently encountered two patients with posterior circulation infarctions after repair of traumatic aortic disruptions using heparin-less partial left heart bypass. METHODS/RESULTS: Both patients underwent interposition graft repair of thoracic aortic transections at the level of the isthmus. The first patient developed a left posterior inferior cerebellar artery infarct after a clamp time of 44 minutes. Swelling of this infarct necessitated ventriculostomy placement. The second patient devel

LSA--a new liver-specific antigen in the rat. II: Immunological and biological properties.

The immunological and biological properties of a liver-specific antigen (LSA) from rat liver are described. LSA gave interspecies cross-reactions with liver extracts from several mammalian species, but no reaction of complete identify was observed. Moreover, no cross-reaction was found with chicken or frog livers, thus indicating the rather late appearance of LSA in the process of evolution. Experiments with fetal and neonatal liver extracts have indicated that LSA appears late in fetal development and is always present at birth. The biological properties of LSA were explored by several indepe

Optimization of pharmacotherapy in conjoined twins: a structured literature search with case applications and educational insights.

INTRODUCTION: Conjoined twins present a rare but clinically challenging scenario requiring highly individualized pharmacologic strategies. Anatomical fusion, shared circulatory systems, and organ overlaps complicate drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, including the neonatal intensive care unit setting and perioperative care. This review aims to synthesize current evidence and clinical experience regarding pharmacotherapy in CTs, focusing on drug selection, therapeutic drug monitoring and individualized dosing strategies based on anatomical and physiological variations. Usefulness of subtraction thermography in the evaluation of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels in the dental pulp.

Purpose: Caries or iatrogenic thermal trauma of the teeth have a significant impact on the dental pulp structure connected with stimulation of angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. Therefore, the aim of the study was to identify the difference in the rate of heat dissipation by vessels present in the dental pulp. Methods: Freshly extracted healthy (n = 10) and carious (n = 14) molars and premolars were cut on a diamond saw and subjected to active thermographic examination and then subjected to lymphoscintigraphy and X-ray examination. The tooth samples were heated uniformly to 40 ± 0.5 °C. A the

Effect of caffeine and caffeine cessation on cerebrovascular reactivity in patients with migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of chronic caffeine use and caffeine cessation on vasodilatory function in the posterior circulation in patients with migraine. BACKGROUND: Studies regarding cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) using vasodilatory stimuli in patients with migraine have yielded conflicting results. We postulated that CVR may not be static, and caffeine might negatively affect vasodilatory function via its vasoconstrictive effect. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal observation study, we recruited patients with episodic migraine who were 18-50 years of age and free of vas
