Association of Allergic Rhinitis with Asthmatic Conditions: A Cross Sectional Study.

Allergic rhinitis is one of important risk factor for developing asthma and sometimes it appears before developing full-blown asthma in affected patients. This is a socially embarrassing condition for the patients. Current estimates are that allergy in one form or another affects some 30% or more of general population. Otolaryngologists may expect about 50% of patients encountered in their daily practice to have allergy as a major or at least a contributing cause of presenting problems. Allergy has been called "The great masquerader", because of its ability to mimic an immense variety of other

Dietary patterns and their association with menopausal symptoms: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Although menopause is a natural event in a woman's life, some of its symptoms can be severe enough to adversely affect her health. There is some evidence to suggest that diet has an influence on menopausal symptoms, but less attention has been paid to dietary patterns. The purpose of this study is to determine the association of dietary patterns with physical, mental, and genitourinary menopausal symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was applied using a sample of 400 postmenopausal women who attended health centers in the south of Tehran, Iran. The menopausal symptoms w

Hematological alterations in lepromatous leprosy: A cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Dapsone has been the mainstay for the treatment of leprosy since its discovery in the 1940s. However, hematological disturbances are not uncommon in leprosy patients on daily dapsone therapy. Hence, the present study was conducted to document the hematologic alterations observed in lepromatous leprosy patients treated with Dapsone 100 mg daily. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted amongst 32 lepromatous leprosy patients treated with Dapsone 100 mg daily. A complete hemogram was conducted for all the study recruits. The test results were compared against

Family functioning, trauma exposure and PTSD: A cross sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Only a minority of trauma-exposed individuals go on to develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous studies in high income countries suggest that maladaptive family functioning adversities (MFFA) in childhood may partially explain individual variation in vulnerability to PTSD following trauma. We test in a lower middle-income setting (Sri Lanka) whether: (1) MFFA is associated with trauma exposure; (2) MFFA moderates the association between exposure to trauma and later (a) PTSD (b) other psychiatric diagnoses; and (3) any association between MFFA and PTSD is explained by

Immunological alterations in frail older adults: A cross sectional study.

Frailty is a progressive physiologic decline in multiple body systems, characterized by loss of function, loss of physiologic reserve, and increased vulnerability to disease and death. This condition is induced by a complex and multifactorial interaction between genetic, biological, physical, psychological and environmental factors. To understand the interplay between the age-related decline of the immune response, and the upregulation of the inflammatory response, the so called inflammaging, we investigated the role of different inflammatory mediators on frailty status in the elderly. The stu

Is the inclinometer a valid measure of thoracic kyphosis? A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Radiographs are used to monitor thoracic kyphosis in individuals with certain pathologies (e.g. osteoporosis), exposing patients to potentially harmful radiation. Thus, other measures for monitoring the progression of thoracic kyphosis are desirable. The gravity-dependent inclinometer has been shown to be reliable but its validity as a measure of thoracic kyphosis has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: To determine the validity of the gravity-dependent (analogue) inclinometer for measuring thoracic kyphosis. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHOD: Participants (n=78) were recruit

Association between Diet and Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Current treatments for seborrheic dermatitis provide only temporary relief. Therefore, identifying modifiable lifestyle factors may help reduce disease burden. The objective of this study was to determine whether specific dietary patterns or total antioxidant capacity are associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Participants of the Rotterdam Study with a skin examination and a food frequency questionnaire were included. Total antioxidant capacity was assessed on the basis of ferric reducing antioxidant potential of each food item. Dietary patterns were identified with principal component analysi

Clinical and histological spectrum of nail psoriasis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nail psoriasis can pose diagnostic difficulties as there are several close clinical mimickers, including onychomycosis, lichen planus, and even squamous cell carcinoma. In view of differing treatment and prognostic implications, it is important to make an accurate diagnosis, especially in cases with isolated nail involvement. METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients with nail changes suggestive of psoriasis were included. A nail punch biopsy was performed and histopathological features were recorded for each case and percentage positivity of each individual feature was calculated. Peri

Anthropometry and Malaria among Children in Niger: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The complex relationship between malnutrition and malaria affects morbidity and mortality in children younger than 5 years, particularly in parts of sub-Saharan Africa where these conditions occur together seasonally. Previous research on this relationship has been inconclusive. Here, we examine the association between anthropometric indicators and malaria infection in a population-based sample of children younger than 5 years in Niger. This cross-sectional study is a secondary analysis of a cluster-randomized trial comparing treatment strategies for trachoma in Niger. We included children age
