They are immunogenic and initially assessed largely by their ability to induce serum bactericidal activity. It is described a pulmonary mucormycosis in an 11-year-old child with AIDS. The diagnosis was obtained by direct examination of the bronchial aspiration. The non-septate, hyaline, dichotomous, pathognomonic cenotic hyphae of this disease were observed. The child was cured with the specific treatment with Amphotericin B, since he died a year later and this affection did not appear in the necropsy. This combination of pulmonary mucormycosis and AIDS has never been reported in Cuba.

The preparation "melagenin" stimulating reproduction of melanocytes and synthesis of melanotic pigment was isolated from human placenta in Cuba. As many as 366 pediatric patients with vitiligo who ranged from 4 to 15 years old were followed up for 1 year. In 62 cases the area of depigmentation amounted to 71 to 100%. Treatment with melagenin proved to be effective in 83% of vitiligo patients. Indications and contraindications have been determined.

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis is a rare, hamartomatous disorder, characterized by the presence of ectopic mature adipose tissue within the superficial dermis. Lesions occur within the first three decades of life. We report four new cases, including a patient with the most extensive affectation reported to date, which was associated with massive lipomas in the subcutaneous cell tissue and diffuse lipomatosis. To our knowledge, it is the first report of this disorder in Cuba.

A brief historical review of human leptospirosis up to 1972 in Cuba is made. Serological studies were made among sugar cane workers from the Army of Working Youth (EJT) during an epidemic leptospirosis outbreak at the Camgüey province in 1973. Results of those studies are presented. The outbreak was due to several serotypes of Leptospira. Other works of the author as well as several reports obtained from specialized medical literature are compared.
