Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a disease of undetermined etiology and pathogenesis. Inflammation is thought to play a key role in many patients, characteristically with an increase in mast cells within the detrusor muscle of the bladder. Irritable urological symptoms with gross hematuria and bilateral lumbar pain developed when the patient received penicillin G for endocarditis. These symptoms were followed by renal insufficiency. Blood eosinophilia generally indicates an underlying allergic, infectious or hematologic disease. Corticoadrenal insufficiency is known to be another cause of blood eosinophilia. Eosinophilic cystitis is a rare disease in which the bladder wall is infiltrated by eosinophils; however, the etiology of eosinophilic cystitis remains unclear. We report a case of corticoadrenal insufficiency with blood eosinophilia developing gross hematuria and eosinophilic cystitis. The patient was treated with medical therapy, including oral corticosteroids, obtaining excellent results.

Painful bladder syndrome (PBS) and interstitial cystitis (IC) often affect women of child-bearing age. This article includes information of interest to PBS/IC patients who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy, and to the clinicians who care for them. One topic is how pregnancy affects PBS/IC symptoms, although little is known at this time. The article also describes the pregnancy risks associated with the most commonly used PBS/IC treatments. Finally, the current knowledge regarding genetic factors in IC is discussed.

Severe hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) may be a life-threatening complication in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). In order to improve the strategies for prophylaxis and treatment, we retrospectively analyzed data on patients who underwent SCT at our center from 1990 through 2005. Patients with HC were identified through our database and their medical charts were reviewed. Grades 2-5 and 3-5 HC developed in 109/834 patients (13.1%) and 27/834 patients (3.2%), respectively. We describe severe necrohemorrhagic cystitis in a female rhesus macaque and a female cynomolgus macaque due to colonization of the urinary bladder by Corynebacterium sp.
