Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes of Metronidazole Monotherapy in Regenerative Endodontics: A Case Series.

The evolution from apexification to regenerative endodontic procedures reflects a paradigm centred on preservation of the apical stem cell niche as a prerequisite for restoration of the pulp-dentine complex. This case series explores the biological premise in 6 immature mandibular second premolars diagnosed with pulp necrosis and chronic apical pathology secondary to fractured Leong's tubercles. Management employed a tissue-preserving regenerative protocol characterised by minimal mechanical instrumentation and metronidazole monotherapy as the sole intracanal antimicrobial agent. Following can

New ideas and advancing technology in prevention and non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease.

Analytical, oral epidemiological studies in adult 'toothbrushing' populations show that the highest prevalence of missing teeth is for molars and maxillary premolars ('key-risk' teeth). The highest prevalence of subgingival microflora, gingivitis (CPITN-1), plaque retentive factors, such as subgingival calculus and restoration overhangs (CPITN-2), and diseased pockets > 3 mm (CPITN-3-4) is found on the approximal surfaces of the same teeth ('key-risk' surfaces). Primary and secondary prevention, as well as treatment of periodontal disease should be focused on these 'key-risk' surfaces. One sin

Influence of selective immunosuppressive drugs on the healing of exposed dogs' dental pulp capped with mineral trioxide aggregate.

INTRODUCTION: Immunosuppressive drugs are used in clinical medicine for a variety of disorders, but their effects on the reparative capacity of the dental pulp are unknown. This study evaluated the influence of selected immunosuppressive drugs on pulpal tissue healing after direct pulp capping of mechanically exposed dog's teeth with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). METHODS: Ten healthy male dogs were assigned into 5 experimental groups: a control group in which no drug was received and 4 experimental groups in which the immunosuppressive drugs prednisone, mycophenolate mofetil, sirolimus, a

Regulation of Reactionary Dentine Formation.

During the treatment of dental caries that has not penetrated the tooth pulp, maintenance of as much unaffected dentine as possible is a major goal during the physical removal of decayed mineral. Damage to dentine leads to release of fossilized factors (transforming growth factor-β [TGF-β] and bone morphogenic protein [BMP]) in the dentine that are believed to stimulate odontoblasts to secrete new "tertiary" dentine (reactionary dentine). This is formed on the pulpal surface of existing dentine and rethickens the dentine. We have previously shown that activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling is p

Histology of Irreversible pulpitis premolars treated with mineral trioxide aggregate pulpotomy.

Studies show that human permanent teeth with carious pulpal exposures can result in a high clinical success rate when treated with pulpotomy and direct pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA pulpotomy). In this case report, a 19-year-old female patient with a second premolar with irreversible pulpitis and symptomatic apical periodontitis was treated with MTA pulpotomy. Follow-up electric pulp tests showed viability of the tooth at three and 10 months. Ten months after the initial treatment, the tooth was extracted for orthodontic reasons and processed for histological examination. M

Quantification of the dental morphology of orangutans.

Orangutans are believed to have close biological affinities to humans. Teeth being the hardest tissue provide useful information on primate evolution. Furthermore, knowledge of the pulp chamber and root canal morphology is important for dental treatment. A female Bornean orangutan and a Sumatran male orangutan skull were available for this study. Both of their dentitions, comprising 50 teeth, were scanned employing the cone-beam computed tomography for both metrical and nonmetrical analyses. Measurements included tooth and crown length, root length, enamel covered crown height, root canal leng

Oral findings associated with primary hyperoxaluria type I.

In the present paper we report the oral findings of a patient who was diagnosed with hyperoxaluria. Hyperoxalurias can basically be classified as primary and secondary, with the first being inborn errors of metabolism and the second a result of excessive oxalate intake. Primary hyperoxalurias form a rare group of metabolic diseases that are inherited in the autosomal recessive fashion. The affected genes code for specific hepatic enzymes that are involved in glyoxylate metabolism and their deficiency results in overproduction of oxalate. Two different types are described: Primary hyperoxaluria

Two hominin incisor teeth from the middle Pleistocene site of Boxgrove, Sussex, England.

In 1995-1996 two isolated hominin lower incisors were found at the middle Pleistocene site of Boxgrove in England, with Lower Palaeolithic archaeology. Boxgrove 2 is a permanent lower right central incisor and Boxgrove 3 a permanent lower left lateral incisor. They were found separately, but close to one another and appear to belong to the same individual. The Boxgrove 1 tibia discovered in 1993 came from a different stratigraphic context and is thus believed to represent a different individual. This paper describes the morphology of the incisors, which is similar to other middle Pleistocene h

Dmp1-deficient mice display severe defects in cartilage formation responsible for a chondrodysplasia-like phenotype.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms by which cartilage formation is regulated is essential toward understanding the physiology of both embryonic bone development and postnatal bone growth. Although much is known about growth factor signaling in cartilage formation, the regulatory role of noncollagenous matrix proteins in this process are still largely unknown. In the present studies, we present evidence for a critical role of DMP1 (dentin matrix protein 1) in postnatal chondrogenesis. The Dmp1 gene was originally identified from a rat incisor cDNA library and has been shown to play an impor

Osteogenesis imperfecta in two litters of dachshunds.

A clinical, morphologic, ultrastructural, and genetic study was performed on five rough-coated dachshund semisiblings with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Clinical signs consisted of pain, spontaneous bone and teeth fractures, joint hyperlaxity, and reduced bone density on radiography. Primary teeth were extremely thin-walled and brittle. The hallmark of the disease was a severe osteopenia characterized by impairment of lamellar bone formation in the long bones, skull, and vertebral column. No deformity or dwarfism was present. The columns of chondrocytes and primary trabeculae in the epiphyses

Application of high-frequency radio waves to direct pulp capping.

INTRODUCTION: In vital pulp therapy such as direct pulp capping, clinical success rates depend on achieving hemostasis in exposed pulp tissue. For hemostasis of exposed pulp tissue, gentle pressure by cotton pellets moistened with sodium hypochlorite is most commonly used. However, more rapid and reliable methods are necessary. Therefore, we focused on high-frequency radio waves (HRW). METHODS: To evaluate reparative dentin induction by HRW, we used a rat direct pulp capping model and performed hemostasis by using HRW of several strengths, covering the pulp with calcium hydroxide as a direct

Clinical, radiographic, and histological observation of a human immature permanent tooth with chronic apical abscess after revitalization treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Revitalization procedures have been widely used for the treatment of immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis. The treatment procedures appear to be capable of encouraging continued root development and thickening of the canal walls. The nature of tissues formed in the canal space and at the root apex after revitalization has been shown histologically in several animal studies; similar studies in humans were recently reported. METHODS: A 9-year-old boy had a traumatic injury to his upper anterior teeth. Tooth #9 suffered a complicated crown fracture with a pulp exposur

[Comparative study on dogs between CO2 laser and conventional technique in direct pulp capping].

UNLABELLED: Three dogs have been used in this experiment. Class V cavities were made in sixty teeth. A pulpal communication was provoked intentionally in these cavities. Teeth were randomly split in 2 groups (30 teeth for each). On first group, the pulp bleeding was stopped until appearance of coagulum on exposed pulp surfaces by means of CO2 laser irradiation (Output Power: 3 W, Pulse duration: 0.1 sec, frequency: 1 Hz, spot size diameter: 0.3 mm, Energy density: 425 J/cm2). Calcium Dihydroxide was deposited followed by a temporary filling (IRM, Dentsply, De Trey, Germany). In the second grou

The effect of hyperglycemia on pulpal healing in rats.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) may impede healing of dental pulps. In this study, the effect of hyperglycemia on pulpal healing was determined in exposed rat pulps capped with mineral trioxide aggregate. Two groups of 11 rats received injections of saline (control group) or streptozotocin to induce hyperglycemia (DM group). The pulps of the maxillary first molars of all rats were exposed and capped. Intact teeth and teeth with exposed pulps without restorations served as positive and negative controls, respectively. Histologic samples were prepared and evaluated for dentin bridge formation and pulpal

Prevalence and evolution of dental restorations: results of the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6).

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic evidence on oral health in Germany was updated in 2025 by the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6). However, epidemiologic data describing changes and progression of dental restorations over time under real-world conditions are lacking at the population level. This analysis of DMS • 6 data therefore aimed to assess the clinical development of caries-related dental restorations and the materials used, and to quantify their rates of change, including the development of secondary caries, after a 9-year follow-up. METHOD AND MATERIALS: First, a cross-sectional analysis
