Partial caries removal increases the survival of permanent tooth: a 14-year case report.

BACKGROUND: Since cases of deep caries lesions may result in dental extraction due to any absence of endodontic services, and considering the advantages of conservative treatment, partial caries removal can be a viable alternative to the treatment of these lesions. CASE REPORT: During the clinical examination, generalised caries lesions were observed in a 6-year-old boy. In the maxillary right first permanent molar (tooth 16), without sensitivity to percussion and/or spontaneous pain, partial caries removal of deep caries was performed being careful to avoid pulpal exposure, followed by cappi

"Smile-Obates": Permanent Dental Development in the White-Handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar carpenteri).

OBJECTIVES: Tooth formation is not as well known as eruption among the Hylobatidae. To expand knowledge of variability in dental development in hylobatids, we described the relative timing of upper and lower permanent tooth initiation, mineralization, and completion in the white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar carpenteri). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a wild-shot, known-sex sample of H. lar carpenteri, we micro-CT scanned 44 crania with permanent teeth forming, including a subset of 16 skulls with mandibles. We used these data to assess crypt, crown, and root formation. Each tooth received a den

[Treatment strategies for immature permanent teeth under general anesthesia].

Immature permanent teeth refer to those that have erupted but have not yet formed and matured in terms of shape and structure. The characteristics of their disease onset and treatment methods are different from those of ordinary permanent teeth. Children with special healthcare needs often lack the capacity to cooperate during routine dental procedures, making treatment under general anesthesia (GA) the preferred option. With social advancements, the demand for pediatric dental GA has considerably increased. This study discuss the treatment strategies for immature permanent teeth under GA, inc

Vital pulp therapy-Factors influencing decision-making for permanent mature teeth with irreversible pulpitis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is an increased tendency towards adopting minimally invasive interventions in dentistry, supported by advancement in materials and techniques. However, the decision-making process in choosing conservative or invasive treatments is influenced by several factors, particularly in permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to systematically review the literature regarding factors that influence decision-making for vital pulp therapy (VPT) as definitive treatment option in permanent mature teeth diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis. Vital pulp therapy of permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis.

Traditionally, vital pulp therapy (VPT) is mainly indicated for young permanent teeth. However, in recent years, VPT has been increasingly applied to mature permanent teeth. VPT was previously thought to be effective only for teeth with normal pulp or reversible pulpitis. However, an increasing body of evidence has demonstrated that VPT can successfully manage permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis or apical periodontitis. This work discusses which teeth with irreversible pulpitis or apical periodontitis are suitable for VPT, the recommended method to evaluate and select this kind of case,

Quantifying the potential of morphological parameters for human dental identification: part 2-selecting the strongest identifiers in mandibular permanent teeth.

The current study aimed to select the best dental morphological identifiers for human identification. Sixty-two panoramic radiographs were collected retrospectively, in which six measurements were performed on all seven mandibular left permanent teeth: tooth length (TL), crown length (CL), root length (RL), crown width (CW), cervical width (CEJW), and root width (RW). Nine length-width ratios were then calculated using these measurements. Three groups of statistics were considered: (1) inter-observer reliability quantified by intra-class correlation (ICC); (2) mean "potential set"; and (3) Spe

Single versus multiple visits for endodontic treatment of permanent teeth.

BACKGROUND: Root canal treatment (RoCT), or endodontic treatment, is a common procedure in dentistry. The main indications for RoCT are irreversible pulpitis and necrosis of the dental pulp caused by carious processes, coronal crack or fracture, or dental trauma. Successful RoCT is characterised by an absence of symptoms (i.e. pain) and clinical signs (i.e. swelling and sinus tract) in teeth without radiographic evidence of periodontal involvement (i.e. normal periodontal ligament). The success of RoCT depends on a number of variables related to the preoperative condition of the tooth, as well

Is pulpotomy a promising modality in treating permanent teeth? An umbrella review.

Emerging evidence suggests the use of less invasive therapy such as pulpotomy in treating permanent teeth with pulp exposure and signs of pulpitis. Hence, this umbrella review aims to evaluate the available systematic reviews on pulpotomy treated permanent teeth. Articles published between January 1970 and May 2021 were searched in ten electronic databases and five textbooks. Only systematic reviews published in English that examined the use of pulpotomy on either carious or traumatic pulpal exposed in mature or immature permanent teeth with signs of pulpitis were selected. The Corrected Cover

Innovative tooth-colored CAD/CAM polycarbonate splint design for prosthetic rehabilitation of a young ectodermal dysplasia patient with permanent tooth aplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is one of the congenitally syndromic diseases with dental anomalies. This syndrome manifests in various forms and usually requires early restorative therapy to restore esthetics and function in young patients. The restorative approaches vary greatly and range from minimally invasive shape corrections using composite build-ups and removable partial or complete dental prostheses, to implantologic solutions, always based on the syndromic expression, the age of the patient, the residual growth, as well as the dentition itself. The present case report presents an innovativ

The two extremes of physiological tooth resorption in primary tooth with or without the permanent successor tooth.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of two radiographic images reveals two distinct, extreme situations of physiological tooth resorption, characteristic of primary teeth with or without permanent successor, due to partial anodontia. DISCUSSION: In all primary teeth, rhizolysis begins after the completion of formation, thanks to the apoptosis of their cells. When apoptosis induced by cementoblasts has denuded the root of these cells, the process of rhizolysis inevitably begins: This will be accelerated by mediators arising from the pericoronal follicle. When there is no permanent successor due to partia

Imaging diagnosis of external root resorption in replanted permanent teeth.

The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital periapical radiographs (PR) in diagnosing external root resorption (ERR) in human permanent teeth replanted after traumatic avulsion. The samples comprised 39 permanent maxillary incisors replanted after traumatic avulsion. Digital PR and CBCT images were taken from each tooth and independently examined by 2 calibrated examiners to assess the ERR activity regarding type and extension. The degrees of agreement between both imaging examinations were determined by the mean global agreement inde

WITHDRAWN: Hand and ultrasonic instrumentation for orthograde root canal treatment of permanent teeth.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment of root canals or root canal treatment is a frequently performed dental procedure and is carried out on teeth in which irreversible pulpitis has led to necrosis (death) of the dental pulp (nerve). Removal of the necrotic tissue remnants and cleaning and shaping of the root canal are important phases of root canal treatment. Treatment options include the use of hand and rotary instruments and methods using ultrasonic or sonic equipment. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this review were to determine the relative clinical effectiveness of hand instrumentation versus

Supernumerary teeth formation following subluxation of primary incisors.

Supernumerary teeth are reported to occur in both primary and permanent dentitions, but their exact aetiology remains unclear. To date, there have been no documented reports of supernumerary teeth formation subsequent to traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) to the primary incisors. This case report illustrates such an unusual consequence where a supernumerary tooth developed subsequent to a subluxation injury to teeth 51 and 61 in a 4-year-old Caucasian girl. This emphasizes the importance of reviewing TDIs, as well as providing parents with sufficient information about possible sequelae at the ti

Hereditary dentine dysplasias: terminology in the context of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Hereditary dentine dysplasias (HDD) such as dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) and dentine dysplasia (DD) are a group of genetic conditions characterised by an abnormal dentine structure due to disturbances in the formation, composition, or organisation of the dentine matrix. Either the primary or both primary and secondary dentition are affected to varying degrees. These disorders result from mutations in the genes encoding the major protein constituents of dentine, notably collagens and phosphoproteins. The clinical and radiological features of the hereditary dentine dysplasias (HDD) are relevan
