Resistant maltodextrin or fructooligosaccharides promotes GLP-1 production in male rats fed a high-fat and high-sucrose diet, and partially reduces energy intake and adiposity.

PURPOSE: Increasing secretion and production of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) by continuous ingestion of certain food components has been expected to prevent glucose intolerance and obesity. In this study, we examined whether a physiological dose (5% weight in diet) of digestion-resistant maltodextrin (RMD) has a GLP-1-promoting effect in rats fed a high-fat and high-sucrose (HFS) diet. METHODS: Rats were fed a control diet or the HFS (30% fat, 40% sucrose wt/wt) diet supplemented with 5% RMD or fructooligosaccharides (FOS) for 8 weeks or for 8 days in separated experiments. Glucose toleran

Jueming Prescription reduces body weight by increasing the mRNA expressions of beta3-adrenergic receptor and uncoupling protein-2 in adipose tissue of diet-induced obese rats.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antiobesity effect of Jueming Prescription (JMP), a Chinese herbal medicine formula, and its influence on mRNA expressions of beta3 adrenergic receptor (beta3-AR) and uncoupling protein-2 (UCP-2) in adipose tissue of diet-induced obese rats. METHODS: Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the normal control group (n =8) that was on a standard chow diet, and the obese model group (n =42) that was on a diet of high fat chow. Two weeks after the high fat diet, 29 obese rats in the obese model group were further randomly divided into 3 groups: the

Antioxidant-rich and fibre-enhanced diets reduce liver fibrosis risk in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: latent class analysis of a cohort study.

Dietary patterns are increasingly recognised as crucial factors influencing the progression of metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This study aimed to explore the association between dietary patterns and MASLD risk among adults, using latent class analysis (LCA), to our knowledge, for the first time in this context. This cross-sectional study included 8549 adults from the general population. Dietary intake data were collected using a validated FFQ and analysed with Nutritionist IV software. A 3-step LCA was applied to determine distinct dietary patterns among participants usi

Adherence to a Mediterranean diet and leisure-time physical activity are associated with reduced initiation of antidepressant, anxiolytic, antipsychotic and antiseizure drug use in older adults: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: We explored how adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) impact psychoactive medication use in older adults. METHODS: We assessed the cumulative MedDiet adherence and LTPA's impact on mental health medication initiation in older individuals at high risk of chronic disease. Associations between the cumulative average of MedDiet adherence (per one-point increase in the adherence score) and LTPA (per increase in 20 metabolic equivalents of task-minute/day [METs-min/day]) with drug initiation were assessed by multivariable Cox regressions

Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas L.) Iridoid and Anthocyanin-Rich Extract Reduces Various Oxidation, Inflammation, and Adhesion Markers in a Cholesterol-Rich Diet Rabbit Model.

Atherogenesis leads to the development of atherosclerosis, a progressive chronic disease characterized by subendothelial lipoprotein retention and endothelial impairment in the arterial wall. It develops mainly as a result of inflammation and also many other complex processes, which arise from, among others, oxidation and adhesion. Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) fruits are abundant in iridoids and anthocyanins-compounds with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. This study aimed to determine the effect of two different doses (10 mg and 50 mg per kg of body weight, respectively)

Protective effects of thornback ray muscle protein hydrolysate against dyslipidemia, oxidative stress and reduced fertility induced by high cholesterol diet in adult male rats.

Enzymatic thornback ray (Raja clavata) muscle hydrolysates have been shown to have antioxidant and antihypertensive activities in vitro. The Neutrase hydrolysate exhibited the highest activities, so it was investigated along with the undigested muscle to test their hypolipidemic, antioxidative and fertility effects in rats fed with a high-cholesterol diet (HCD). Animals were allocated into four groups of 5 rats each: a normal diet group (control), a HCD group, and two groups of HCD with a daily dose of undigested muscle (Und) or the hydrolysate (MH) at 0.7 g kg-1 of body weight. All animals re

The Kv1.3 channel blocker Vm24 enhances muscle glucose transporter 4 mobilization but does not reduce body-weight gain in diet-induced obese male rats.

AIMS: Voltage-gated potassium channels 1.3 (Kv1.3) can be targeted to reduce diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in mice. Since species-specific differences in Kv1.3 expression and pharmacology have been observed, we tested the effect of Vm24, a high-affinity specific blocker of Kv1.3 channels from Vaejovis mexicanus smithi, on body weight (BW), glucose tolerance and insulin resistance in diet-induced obese rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Young adult male Wistar rats were switched to a high-fat/high-fructose (HFF) diet. Eighteen days later animals were divided in two groups: vehicle and

Effects of Caloric Restriction on DNA Damage: A Comparison of Very Low-Calorie and Standard Reduced-Calorie Diets in Obesity-Non-Randomised, Quasi-Experimental Clinical Intervention Study.

Background: Obesity is a chronic endocrine-metabolic disorder. The risk of comorbidities increases with a higher body mass index (BMI), particularly when BMI ≥ 35.0 kg/m2. Common complications include insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and chronic low-grade inflammation, which collectively impair DNA stability by promoting the formation of genotoxic species. Methods: This non-randomised, quasi-experimental clinical intervention study included 53 participants (both sexes) with a BMI ≥ 35.0 kg/m2, who were assigned to parallel experimental or control streams based on clinical nee

Low Carbohydrate Diet Containing Soy Protein and Fish Oil Reduces AOM/DSS-Induced Colon Cancer, in Part, by an Acetate-Mediated Reduction in TH17 Cell Differentiation.

Since our previous studies found a low-carbohydrate (CHO) diet containing soy protein and fish oil (i.e., 15%Amylose/Soy/FO) significantly reduced tobacco carcinogen-induced lung nodules in A/J mice, breast tumors in C3(1)/Tag mice, and myelomalignancy in miR-146a knockout mice, we asked herein if this CHO diet could also reduce colorectal cancer. We tested the efficacy of the 15%Amylose/Soy/FO diet in preventing colitis-induced colorectal cancer using an azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate BALB/c mouse model. The 15%Amylose/Soy/FO diet significantly reduced colon tumor numbers compared to a W

The effect of a sustainable diet and time-restricted eating and probiotic in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction patients: study protocol for a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by structural and/or functional abnormalities that impair cardiac output, leading to alterations in cardiac biomarkers, metabolic disturbances, and gut dysbiosis. Lifestyle interventions, particularly dietary strategies such as time-restricted eating (TRE) and healthy diets like the sustainable diet (SD), along with probiotic supplementation, have been proposed as key components in the management of heart failure. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the effects of co-administration of SD and TRE, either alone or in com

N-acetyl-L-cysteine treatment reduces beta-cell oxidative stress and pancreatic stellate cell activity in a high fat diet-induced diabetic mouse model.

Obesity plays a major role in type II diabetes (T2DM) progression because it applies metabolic and oxidative stress resulting in dysfunctional beta-cells and activation of intra-islet pancreatic stellate cells (PaSCs) which cause islet fibrosis. Administration of antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) in vivo improves metabolic outcomes in diet-induced obese diabetic mice, and in vitro inhibits PaSCs activation. However, the effects of NAC on diabetic islets in vivo are unknown. This study examined if dosage and length of NAC treatment in HFD-induced diabetic mice effect metabolic outcomes asso

A Reduced Tryptophan Diet in Patients with Diarrhoea-Predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome Improves Their Abdominal Symptoms and Their Quality of Life through Reduction of Serotonin Levels and Its Urinary Metabolites.

(1). An essential component of any treatment for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an adequate diet. Currently, a low FODMAP diet is recommended as a first-line therapy, but it does not relieve abdominal discomfort in all patients, and alternative nutritional treatment is required. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a tryptophan-lowering diet (TRP) on abdominal and mental symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome with predominant diarrhea (IBS-D). (2). The study included 40 patients with IBS-D, and 40 healthy subjects served as a baseline for IBS-D p
