OBJECTIVE: To review our management of intestinal atresia (AI).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patientes with AI, from 1995 to 2011.
RESULTS: AI was identified in 41 patients, 29,2% had maternal polyhydramnios and 48,7% were diagnosed prenatally. Four of them had Down Syndrome and 18 had cardiopathy. Duodenal atresia-stenosis (AD) was present in 21 patients, that were treated by 19 duodenoduodenostomy, 1 duodenojejunostomy and 1 duodenotomy with duodenal membrane resection. Jejunoileal atresia (AYI) was present in 20 patients and we performed 15 end to end anastomosis, 1 íle

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-month-old 1.9-kg (4.2-lb) spayed female Siamese cat was evaluated because of a history of decreased appetite, regurgitation, vomiting, and lack of weight gain.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Radiographic findings included a fluid- and gas-distended stomach with a small accumulation of mineral opacities. Ultrasonographic examination confirmed severe fluid distention of the stomach with multiple hyperechoic structures present and revealed protrusion of the thickened pylorus into the gastric lumen, with normal pylorogastric serosal continuity. Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tr

UNLABELLED: A 66-year-old patient was admitted to the Department of Surgery at the Na Bulovce Hospital (First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague) following an episode of bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract. Gastroscopy found a large, wide-based sessile polypoid mass, exulcerated at its top and filling a major part of the intestinal lumen. Conclusion based on biopsy: malignant mesenchymal tumour - sarcoma. An abdominal CT scan revealed, besides this tumour, also metastases in the spleen. With regard to the malignant nature of the tumour and from fear of gradual bleeding out,

OBJECTIVE: Important factors surrounding chest surgery for the patients complicated with digestive disease were discussed according to the experiences of clinical settings.
METHODS: Check points regarding each context, preoperative, perioperative, postoperative, and outpatient care were considered independently.
RESULTS: If digestive diseases are uncontrolled, the operation should be postponed until they are appropriately cared. Dental problems such as teeth caries or denture insufficiency should be cleared preoperatively. Dysphagia after the head and neck surgery must be evaluated and alter

PURPOSE: Total colonic aganglionosis (TCA) is a severe form of Hirschsprung's disease (HD), occurring in less than 10 % of the cases. It is a challenging surgical condition and outcomes of pull-through (PT) surgery are reported to be inferior to those in patients with recto-sigmoid HD. As even large centres only see a few patients with TCA, there is little information on the long-term outcome of patients after PT operation for TCA. The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate the long-term clinical outcome in patients with TCA.
METHODS: MEDLINE(®) and EMBASE(®) databases were searched for

Gallstone ileus is a well-recognized clinical entity. It usually affects elderly female patients, and very often diagnosis can be delayed resulting in high morbidity and mortality. An abdominal x-ray and computed tomographic (CT) scan of the abdomen may show classical radiological features of small bowel obstruction, pneumobilia, and an ectopic gallstone. Laparotomy and enterlithotomy with or without definite biliary surgery is an established treatment. Since 1992, many cases of laparoscopic-assisted enterolithotomy have been reported. Only a few cases of a totally laparoscopic approach have b

INTRODUCTION: There are few studies on congenital duodenal obstruction. The poor peristalsis of the proximal duodenum that causes functional obstruction is a well known problem that occurs in the immediate postoperative period. The optimum technique to address the problem is still controversial.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the results obtained using two different surgical techniques to resolve congenital duodenal obstruction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A five-year retrospective review of the neonates who underwent surgery for duodenal obstruction was undertaken. Two different surgical techniques were u

BACKGROUND: We set out to evaluate early commencement of post-operative enteral nutrition versus traditional management in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery.
METHODS: Electronic databases were searched, references lists were scanned and authors contacted for additional information. We looked for randomised controlled trials comparing early commencement of feeding (within 24 h) with no feeding in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. Primary endpoints were wound infections, intra-abdominal abscesses, pneumonia, anastomotic leakage, mortality, length of hospital stay and comp

The surgical management of perianal Crohn's disease is complex with a wide range of operations being described. The initial emergency treatment is to drain any source of underlying sepsis. A loose seton drainage or a defunctioning stoma can then be used as a 'bridge' to definitive treatment allowing both adequate assessment of the condition and preventing further sepsis. The likelihood of success of any surgical repair must be weighed against the risk of faecal incontinence. Improved results of a local surgical repair are seen with optimal surgical and medical management of perianal Crohn's di

Genital prolapse, whether associated or not with urinary, anal or sexual dysfunction, should be evaluated globally to select the appropriate treatment. Rectocele and enterocele are defects of the posterior vaginal compartment, although they can be secondary to abnormalities of the central compartment, since lesions of the perineal raphe and rectovaginal septum can occur in isolation or accompanied by others that also affect the tissues involved in pelvic support. The various surgical approaches to rectocele alone or associated with other defects are reviewed. Likewise, the distinct pathogenic
