A Case of Pott's Puffy Tumor Associated With Barosinusitis From Scuba Diving.

Barosinusitis, or sinus barotrauma, is a well-described condition associated with changes in barometric pressure during flight and diving that can result in sinonasal mucosal injury. In this case report, we present an adolescent who experienced barosinusitis during scuba diving and subsequently developed Pott's puffy tumor (PPT), characterized by frontal sinusitis, frontal bone osteomyelitis, and overlying subperiosteal abscess. This unique case of PPT following scuba diving provides the opportunity to review the pathophysiology of both barotrauma-induced sinus disease and PPT, a rare and unre…

Snorkelling and breath-hold diving fatalities in New Zealand, 2007 to 2016.

INTRODUCTION: New Zealand's (NZ) long coastline offers a diverse underwater environment with abundant opportunities for harvesting seafood and for recreation. Fatalities from snorkelling/breath-hold diving have been reported from the 1960s through to 2006. Those from 2007 to 2016 are reported here. METHODS: The National Coronial Information System, the Australasian Diving Safety Foundation diving fatality database, and the Water Safety NZ "Drownbase" were searched and additional coronial data provided by the NZ Ministry of Justice. An anonymised database was created and analysed for multiple …

Fear of Killer Whales Drives Extreme Synchrony in Deep Diving Beaked Whales.

Fear of predation can induce profound changes in the behaviour and physiology of prey species even if predator encounters are infrequent. For echolocating toothed whales, the use of sound to forage exposes them to detection by eavesdropping predators, but while some species exploit social defences or produce cryptic acoustic signals, deep-diving beaked whales, well known for mass-strandings induced by navy sonar, seem enigmatically defenceless against their main predator, killer whales. Here we test the hypothesis that the stereotyped group diving and vocal behaviour of beaked whales has benef…

The performance of 'temperature stick' carbon dioxide absorbent monitors in diving rebreathers.

INTRODUCTION: Diving rebreathers use canisters containing soda lime to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from expired gas. Soda lime has a finite ability to absorb CO₂. Temperature sticks monitor the exothermic reaction between CO₂ and soda lime to predict remaining absorptive capacity. The accuracy of these predictions was investigated in two rebreathers that utilise temperature sticks. METHODS: Inspiration and rEvo rebreathers filled with new soda lime were immersed in water at 19°C and operated on mechanical circuits whose ventilation and CO₂-addition parameters simulated dives involving either …

Lower-extremity isokinetic strength ratios of elite springboard and platform diving athletes.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to examine knee extensor and flexor muscle strength ratios of an elite group of diving athletes. METHODS: Sixteen divers (10 females and 6 males) from the Brazil national team were assessed for lower-body strength. They had participated in international competitions such as the 2016 Olympic Games and 2015 Pan American Games. The dynamic concentric torque of their knee flexor and extensor muscles were evaluated using a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer. Bilateral tests were performed at 60º s-1. Flexor to extensor (F/E) peak torque ratio and percent…

Temporomandibular disorders in scuba divers-an increased risk during diving certification training.

The design of a diving regulator's mouthpiece increases the risk of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in scuba divers. The total weight of a diving regulator is reflected directly on the temporomandibular joint, causing articular and periarticular disorders. In the current study, the prevalence of TMD in scuba divers triggered during diving certification training is investigated. We also aimed to determine the factors that lead to TMD during diving training and clarify the observation that there is an increased incidence of TMD in inexperienced divers. The study was held between 2006 and 2011…

Effect of simulated diving trips on pulmonary artery pressure in healthy men.

BACKGROUND: Environmental stresses, such as immersion, cold, and venous gas microbubbles, have been shown to contribute to an increase in pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) after single SCUBA dives. This study was carried out to investigate PAP changes following a dry chamber dive. METHODS: 17 male divers [mean age 32 years, standard deviation (SD) 7 years, mean body mass index 26 kg m(-2) (SD 3 kg m(-2))] participated in the study. Heart disease was ruled out by ECG, stress-ECG and transthoracic echocardiography in all subjects. Echocardiographic assessment of PAP (peak gradient at pulmonary an

[Ventricular afterload and transmitral Doppler flow profile: effects of the diving test].

The influence of loading conditions on mitral flow velocity profile was studies by pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography in 10 normal subjects during diving test (5 min face exposure to iced water). The cold stimulus increased blood pressure (p less than 0.001), peripheral resistances (p less than 0.001), peak-systolic and end-systolic left ventricular (LV) meridional wall stresses (p less than 0.005). No significant change was found in heart rate. LV end-diastolic volume was unchanged, while LV end-systolic volume increased (p less than 0.005). Consequently, LV fractional shortening decreased …

Oxygen binding in alligator blood related to temperature, diving, and "alkaline tide".

Blood of Alligator mississippiensis has a relatively high O2 affinity, the half-saturation O2 tension (P50) = 24.5 Torr at pH 7.495, the art … high O2 affinity may ensure efficient utilization of the lung O2 reserve during breath holding and diving, whereas its pronounced in vivo temperature sensitivity may be adaptive to the high temperature quotients of the organismic O2 requirement. The large difference between theta CO2 and theta FA will favor constancy in blood O2 affinity in the face of …

Effect of cardiovascular variables on hyperpnea during recovery from diving in ducks.

Control of hyperpnea during recovery from diving in unanesthetized White Pekin ducks, Anas platyrhynchos, was examined. Postdive minute ventilation (VE) increased five times regardless of the length of the preceding dive (1-4 min), although longer dives resulted in slower return of VE towards predive levels. Manipulation of arterial blood gases showed that both hypoxia and hypercapnia contributed to hyperpnea on emergence. Although chronic bilateral carotid body denervation depressed VE before and after diving, VE still increased four times after 1-min dives. Postdive hyperpnea was accompanied…

Saturation Diving Decompression Treatment for Severe Type II Decompression Sickness Following Emergency Ascent.

INTRODUCTION: Decompression sickness (DCS) is a critical concern in diving operations. Severe type II DCS, characterized by neurological involvement, is particularly disabling and life - threatening. Traditional decompression treatments often show limitations in severe cases. This case report highlights the effectiveness of saturation diving decompression in the treatment of such severe DCS. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old male diver experienced severe type II decompression sickness (DCS) following an emergency ascent from a depth of 56 meters of seawater (msw) due to an underwater explosion. The …

High-altitude decompression illness following recreational diving: a case report from Lake Van.

RATIONALE: Decompression sickness (DCS) is a clinical syndrome caused by inert gas bubble formation following a rapid reduction in ambient pressure, with an increased risk in high-altitude diving due to lower barometric pressure. Although neurological symptoms are well-documented, respiratory involvement is less frequently reported. PATIENT PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old male recreational diver performed his first-ever dive in Lake Van, descending to approximately 30 meters and remaining at depth for several minutes before ascending rapidly to the surface without a decompression stop. Immediatel…

Forensic analysis of an unwitnessed fatal diving accident using in-water investigative reconstruction.

Unwitnessed diving fatalities present significant challenges for forensic investigation. We describe a fatal diving accident involving a 32-year-old experienced female diver during a deep night dive in freshwater. The diver became separated from her buddy and was recovered at depth in a head-down position, with evidence of entanglement of the central manifold valve of the twin-tank open-circuit breathing apparatus by a thin guideline. Autopsy findings were consistent with drowning. Technical examination of the diving equipment revealed no mechanical malfunction. Given the absence of eyewitness…
