A prospective study of the incidence of hiatus hernia and/or reflux oesophagitis was carried out in 670 patients referred for routine upper alimentary endoscopy. Hiatus hernia was found in 16.6% and reflux oesophagitis in 15.1% of the patients. Forty-two per cent of the patients with hernia did not have oesophagitis, whereas 63% of the patients with reflux oesophagitis had hernia. In patients without reflux oesophagitis the incidence of hiatus hernia was 8%. Reflux oesophagitis was significantly (p less than 0.001) related to hiatus hernia. The metabolism of collagen and glycoproteins bound with glycosaminoglycans was studied in 19 patients with a preulcerous condition (chronic primary gastroduodenitis) and in 49 patients with peptic ulcer of the stomach (12) and duodenum (37). This is the report of two cases of successful endoscopic foreign body extraction from the gastrointestinal tract. On the basis of 27 personal cases of adenocarcinoma of the intestine and a review of the literature, the authors discuss present-day knowledge about this pathology from both radiologic and therapeutic viewpoints. Although it has been reported that cystic fibrosis and coeliac disease can coexist, a clear relationship between the two diseases has never been firmly established. Our case concerns a 56-year-old man with cystic fibrosis (delta F508/N1303J). Over the last two years he had been complaining about diarrhoea and meteorism.
