Effect of increased middle ear pressure on blood flow to the middle ear, inner ear and facial nerve in guinea pigs.

We investigated the effect of increased middle ear pressure on blood flow to the inner ear, middle ear, and facial nerve in guinea pigs using a nonradioactive microsphere technique. The elevation of middle ear pressure significantly reduced blood flow to the middle ear. Blood flow to the facial nerve also decreased due to the elevation of the middle ear pressure but the reduction was not significant. Blood flow to the inner ear did not change even after the middle ear pressure was increased. Findings are discussed in relationship to aural barotrauma, alternobaric vertigo and facial baroparesis

Effects of inner ear abnormalities on middle ear mechanics: Findings from adults with MD and LVAS.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical significance of WAI as a predictive marker for MD and LVAS among adults. METHODS: Participants included 110 ears with MD, 18 ears with LVAS, and 92 normal ears (control group) recruited from clinical audiology settings. The outcome measures included Wideband Energy Absorbance (WBA), Resonance Frequency (RF), admittance Magnitude (YM), and phase Angle (YA). Propensity Score Matching (PSM) was conducted to treat the group imbalance. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, The MD group exhibited significantly lower WBA between 1587 and 4000 Hz (p < 0.05), w

Do magnesium infusions protect the inner ear during middle ear surgery? A randomized double blind study.

Joachims et al. recently demonstrated that magnesium was able to protect the inner ear during exposure to noise and fire arms. During middle ear surgery, the inner ear is subjected to noise from fraising and drilling. We saw fit, therefore, to conduct a random double blind study to establish whether magnesium infusions would protect the inner ear during middle ear surgery. We examined 80 patients (38 verum, 42 placebo). The verum patients received 10 mg/kg body weight magnesium 12 hours and 1 hour prior to operation. Plasma and red cell magnesium levels were measured pre-operatively and intra-

Evaluation of inner ear damage during conditions with middle ear effusion by use of brainstem audiometry.

The method of auditory evoked brainstem responses (AEBR) was applied on an animal model with two types of well defined middle ear effusions--serous otitis media (SOM) and purulent otitis media (POM). The animals with SOM exhibited fairly normal interpeak latencies but a considerably increased auditory threshold. In contrast, POM mainly affected the latencies of the brainstem evoked potential but also caused a slight increase of the auditory threshold. The results indicate that SOM chiefly causes a conductive hearing loss, while POM also affects the neural circuit.

Comparison of Inner Ear Contrast Enhancement among Patients with Unilateral Inner Ear Symptoms in MR Images Obtained 10 Minutes and 4 Hours after Gadolinium Injection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recently 4-hour delayed-enhanced 3D-FLAIR MR imaging has been used in pathophysiologic analysis of the inner ear in many auditory diseases, including sudden sensorineural hearing loss, but comparison among different time points is not clear in patients with unilateral inner ear symptoms. We compared the signal-intensity ratios of the inner ears in patients with unilateral inner ear symptoms on 10-minute delayed-enhanced and 4-hour delayed-enhanced 3D-FLAIR MR images after IV gadolinium injection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 10-minute delayed-enhanced and 4-hour delayed-

Effects of Tympanic Membrane Electrodes on Sound Transmission From the Ear Canal to the Middle and Inner Ears.

OBJECTIVES: The first objective of the study was to compare approaches to eardrum electrode insertion as they relate to the likelihood of introducing an acoustic leak between the ear canal and eartip. A common method for placing a tympanic membrane electrode involves securing the electrode in the canal by routing it underneath a foam eartip. This method is hypothesized to result in a slit leak between the canal and foam tip due to the added bulk of the electrode wire. An alternative approach involves creating a bore in the wall of the foam tip that the electrode can be threaded through. This m

Infrasound transmission in the human ear: Implications for acoustic and vestibular responses of the normal and dehiscent inner ear.

The transmission of infrasound within the human ear is not well understood. To investigate infrasound propagation through the middle and inner ear, velocities of the stapes and round window membrane were measured to very low frequencies (down to 0.9 Hz from 2000 Hz) in fresh cadaveric human specimens. Results from ear-canal sound stimulation responses show that below 200 Hz, the middle ear impedance is dominated by its stiffness term, limiting sound transmission to the inner ear. During air-conduction, normal ears have approximately equal volume velocities at the oval (stapes) and round window

An ultrastructural and functional study of the inner ear after administration of hyaluronan into the middle ear of the guinea pig.

A single dose of hyaluronan, 19 mg/ml was administered into the right middle ear cavity of guinea pigs. The auditory function of the right ear was tested by recording the gross neural action potential (N1) before, directly after, and 28 days after the administration of hyaluronan. In a control group the right ear was sham-operated and the gross neural action potential (N1) was recorded twice; on the day of the sham operation and 28 days later. All animals were killed 28 days after the operation. All treated as well as sham-operated ears and every second intact ear were studied by scanning elec

Communicatory routes connecting the middle ear, the inner ear and the subarachnoid space via perineural space.

Twenty-one rabbits received injection of Indian ink into the stylomastoid foramen. Observation of the serial sections of their temporal bones revealed Indian ink infiltration into the subarachnoid space, along the facial nerve, the auricular branch of the vagus nerve and the tympanic nerve. Along the acoustic nerve, the infiltration was found as far as the fundus of the internal auditory meatus. In some cases, however, Indian ink reached the subarachnoid space and infiltrated into the scala tympani, scala vestibuli and around the saccule by way of the cochlear aqueduct. These routes are suspec

Imaging in a Rare Case of Unilateral External and Middle Ear Anomalies Associated with Inner Ear Malformation.

External ear malformations are commonly associated with middle ear malformations due to their closely related embryogenesis. Inner ear anomalies are less consistently seen due to their independent development. Cross-sectional imaging has come to play a critical role in the workup of congenital deafness in the pediatric age group. To optimize speech and language development, early diagnosis and treatment are very crucial. Identification of these anomalies is additionally important when operative intervention is being planned because they may complicate or perhaps preclude the surgery.

Morphogenesis of the middle ear ossicles and spatial relationships with the external and inner ears during the embryonic period.

We describe the three-dimensional morphogenesis of the middle ear ossicles (MEOs) according to Carnegie stage (CS) in human embryos. Seventeen samples including 33 MEOs from CS18 to 23 were selected from the Kyoto Collection. The primordia of the MEOs and related structures were histologically observed and three-dimensionally reconstructed from digital images. The timing of chondrogenesis was variable among structures. The stapes was recognizable as a vague condensation of the mesenchymal cells in all samples from CS18, whereas the malleus and incus were recognizable at CS19. Chondrogenesis of

Local treatment of the inner ear: a study of three different polymers aimed for middle ear administration.

CONCLUSION: A formulation based on sodium hyaluronate (NaHYA) was the most promising candidate vehicle for intra-tympanic drug administration regarding conductive hearing loss, inflammatory reactions, and elimination. OBJECTIVES: Recent advances in inner ear research support the idea of using the middle ear cavity for drug administration to target the inner ear. This paper presents rheological and safety assessments of three candidate polymer formulations for intra-tympanic drug administration. METHOD: The formulations were based on sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), sodium hyaluronate

The prognostic value of the glycerol test: a review of 60 ears with unidirectional inner ear valve implants.

The following are our conclusions in regard to glycerol test interpretation based on 60 valve implants: Negative Tests 1. A negative glycerol test result and no audiometric evidence of significant hearing fluctuations indicate that a patient is unlikely to have postoperative hearing that is better than his best preoperative hearing. 2. The patient with a negative test can still have an excellent chance (greater than 80 per cent) to be relieved of vertigo. 3. A negative test and no audiometric evidence of significant hearing fluctuations in a patient with cochlear Meniere's disease would contra

Targeting the melanocytes of the inner ear: A comparison of different CreER lines.

The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance. During development, the inner ear undergoes extensive morphogenesis to create a coil shaped cochlea and three semicircular canals from an original flat otic placode. During this morphogenesis, neural crest cells migrate into the inner ear in formation to become either glial cells or melanocytes. The glial cells are located in the cochleo-vestibular ganglion and the melanocytes reside in the stria vascularis in the cochlea and dark cells zone in the vestibule. The stria vascularis pumps potassium ions into the scala media, generating a posit

The Current State of Proteomics and Metabolomics for Inner Ear Health and Disease.

Characterising inner ear disorders represents a significant challenge due to a lack of reliable experimental procedures and identified biomarkers. It is also difficult to access the complex microenvironments of the inner ear and investigate specific pathological indicators through conventional techniques. Omics technologies have the potential to play a vital role in revolutionising the diagnosis of ear disorders by providing a comprehensive understanding of biological systems at various molecular levels. These approaches reveal valuable information about biomolecular signatures within the coch
