Clinical, socio-demographic, and parental correlates of early autism traits in a community cohort of toddlers.

Identifying factors linked to autism traits in the general population may improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying divergent neurodevelopment. In this study we assess whether factors increasing the likelihood of childhood autism are related to early autistic trait emergence, or if other exposures are more important. We used data from 536 toddlers from London (UK), collected at birth (gestational age at birth, sex, maternal body mass index, age, parental education, parental language, parental history of neurodevelopmental conditions) and at 18 months (parents cohabiting, measures

Venous incompetence, poverty and lactate dehydrogenase in Jamaica are important predictors of leg ulceration in sickle cell anaemia.

Clinical features and potential risk factors for chronic leg ulceration (duration >6 months) in homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease were examined in 225 subjects in the Jamaican Cohort Study. Potential risk factors included the number of HBA genes, steady state haematology, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), venous incompetence, and socio-economic status. Chronic ulcers occurred in 53 subjects with the highest risk of ulcer development at 18 years. The prevalence was 29.5% and cumulative incidence 16.7%. Gender or alpha-thalassaemia trait did not affect the incidence of leg ulcer. Ulceration w

Predicting Elder Abuse Using a Random Forest Classifier.

This paper aims to identify key factors influencing elder abuse within the family and to further explore the heterogeneity of these factors across different types of elder abuse. The data were drawn from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey and the final valid sample was 10,703. A random forest classifier, a supervised machine learning method, was employed to identify the key influencing factors of elder abuse. Children's economic status is found to be the most important factor in predicting elder abuse, followed by the number of children, the health status of older people, intergenerati

Use of local variations in trachoma endemicity in depicting interplay between socio-economic conditions and disease.

A trachoma prevalence survey was conducted in 1960-61 in Taiwan prior to the introduction of a large-scale treatment campaign. Marked local differences in endemicity of trachoma were encountered in neighbouring administrative areas (lin). Use is made of these local variations in depicting the interactions between socio-economical factors and endemicity of the disease. The study demonstrates the interaction between the socio-economic development of the household, on the one hand, and of the community of which the household forms a part, on the other. In a community of low trachoma endemicity, pe

Modeling COVID-19 response in Cuba: a hybrid approach combining agent-based modeling and time series analysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted vulnerable populations, such as low-income households, exacerbating existing health and economic challenges. In Cuba, the crisis exposed the effects of long-standing economic difficulties, worsened by sanctions, but the country's robust public health system and independent vaccine development enabled an effective response. This study addresses the gap in understanding how socio-economic factors and individual behaviors interact to influence disease spread. It proposes a hybrid, efficient, and parsimonious model combining ABM (Agent-Based Mo…

Adulthood functioning: the joint effects of parental alcoholism, gender and childhood socio-economic stress.

The popular literature has publicized the adjustment difficulties of adult children of an alcohol-dependent parent (ACOAs); however, empirical studies do not provide consistent support. We examined the impact of parental alcoholism, degree of childhood socio-economic stress and gender on three broad categories of adulthood functioning (psychopathology, socio-economic attainment and marital stability). These effects were investigated with a heterogeneous sample of 400 men and 226 women participating in studies at the University of Michigan Alcohol Research Center. Parental alcoholism and childh

The differential effect of socio-economic status, birth weight and gender on body mass index in Australian Aboriginal Children.

BACKGROUND: Adult Aboriginal Australians have 1.5-fold higher risk of obesity, but the trajectory of body mass index (BMI) through childhood and adolescence and the contribution of socio-economic factors remain unclear. Our objective was to determine the changes in BMI in Australian Aboriginal children relative to non-Aboriginal children as they move through adolescence into young adulthood, and to identify risk factors for higher BMI. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal school children commenced in 2002 across 15 different screening areas across urban, region…

Current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in India.

Food-borne parasitic zoonoses have a major impact on the health and economy in developing countries in the tropics and sub-tropics. Complex socio-economic and socio-cultural factors impact on the maintenance of parasitic zoonoses. In addition to human disease, some of these parasites are responsible for economic loss to livestock production. Throughout India, problems of food-borne parasitic zoonoses differ because of varied food habits. Other factors, however, such as unhygienic living conditions, lack of education, poor personal hygiene, poverty and occupation, also contribute to the dissemi

Adolescent executive function as a resilience factor in the family stress model among Mexican-origin families.

Mexican-origin families often face economic hardship due to systemic oppression, increasing the likelihood of adolescent marijuana use. While the family stress model provides insight into the mechanism of the association between family economic hardship and adolescent marijuana use, resilience factors are relatively unknown. The present study uses a three-wave longitudinal data set of Mexican immigrant families in the United States (Wave 1-adolescents: Mage = 12.29, SD = 0.93; mothers: Mage = 38.57, SD = 5.71) to investigate the mechanism underlying the association between family income and ad

Depressive symptoms among senior citizens in Baijanath Rural Municipality, Nepal: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Depression among senior citizens is a growing public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where aging populations often experience multiple socio-economic and health-related vulnerabilities. In Nepal, community-based evidence on geriatric depression, especially in rural areas, remains limited. This study aimed to assess the frequency of depressive symptoms and to identify associated factors among senior citizens residing in rural communities of Nepal. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 205 senior citizens (aged ≥ 60 years) resi

It's not just who you are but where you live: an exploration of community influences on individual HIV status in rural Malawi.

Approximately 1 million people are infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Malawi. Despite efforts aimed at changing individual risk behaviors, HIV prevalence continues to rise among rural populations. Both previous research and the Political Economy of Health framework suggest that community-based socio-economic factors and accessibility may influence HIV transmission; however, these community factors have received little empirical investigation. To fill this gap, this research uses data from a nationally representative probability sample of rural Malawians combined with small are…

Addressing Stillbirth: Exploring Economic Status, Government Strategies, and Gaps.

Stillbirth rates exhibit a strong correlation with a country's economic level, suggesting the significant impact of socioeconomic factors on maternal and fetal health. Various risk factors for stillbirth have been identified in high-, low- and middle-income countries, but the widening economic inequity between different nations results in discrepant etiologies of stillbirth. The emotional impacts of stillbirth affect not only the birthing person, but also the reproductive partner, family, and community due to the enduring pain and grief associated with the loss. Herein, we review the existing …
