Late-onset eccrine syringofibroadenoma of the feet in a patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

A 56-year-old woman with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia presented with a 10-year history of persisting wart-like skin lesions on her feet. Biopsy revealed changes of eccrine syringofibroadenoma. These lesions are rare, with only nine case reports describing an association with ectodermal dysplasia of hidrotic type (Clouston and Schopf's syndrome). To our knowledge, this is the first case of eccrine syringofibroadenoma developing in the hypohidrotic/anhidrotic subtype of ectodermal dysplasia.

[Ectodermal dysplasias – molecular mechanisms responsible for occurrence of most frequent syndroms].

Ectodermal dysplasias are a wide group of genetic disorders characterised by clinical symptoms in ectodermal derivatives (most frequently teeth, hair, nails and sweat glands). There is a number of genes, which, if mutated, can cause the specified phenotype. The molecular basis of many ectodermal dysplasias have been investigated. The phenotype often results from the imparied communication in molecular pathways important in embryonic morphogenesis or disturbed function of protein complexes involved in homeostasis, adhesion and stability of the cells in the tissue. Different classification syste…

[Clinical and genetic analysis of a child with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical and genetic characteristics of a child with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED). METHODS: Clinical data of the child was collected. Peripheral blood samples were taken from the child and his parents with informed consent and subjected to copy number variation (CNV) analysis and whole exome sequencing (WES). RESULTS: The male infant manifested sparse hair, anhidrosis, anuresis due to polycystic kidney dysplasia, external genital malformation and anal atresia. WES has revealed a 406 bp hemizygous deletion at Xq13 (68 836 147-68 836 553) in the …

A recurrent mutation of GJB6 in a big Chinese family with Hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare inherited syndrome characterised by nail dystrophy, palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and alopecia. Four mutations (p.G11R, p.A88V, p.V37E and p.D50N) in gap junction beta 6 (GJB6) gene, which codes connexin30 protein, have been found to cause HED in different populations. Here, we reported a big Chinese family in which 24 patients over five generations were suffered with HED. Sequence analysis identified all 24 patients carry a recurrent missense mutation c.263C > T (p.A88V) in GJB6. Our results reveal gene testing of GJB6 is important for diagnosis, pr…

[Mutation in the ED1, Ala349Thr in a patient with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a very rare disease characterized by the absence of eccrine glands, dry skin, scanty hair, and dental abnormalities. It is caused by mutations within the ED1 gene, which encodes a protein, ectodysplasin-A (EDA). Clinical characteristic are frontal bossing, saddle nose, pointed chin, a prominent supraorbital ridge with periorbital hyperpigmenta-tion, and anodontia. Those affected show great intolerance to heat. We report the first Mexican 2-year-old boy with an Ala349Thr missense mutation from Tamaulipas, México.

Recognition of p63 by the E3 ligase ITCH: Effect of an ectodermal dysplasia mutant.

The unripe pulp, inner peel and seed of durian were used in this study. These are generally not considered edible and must be disposed of as waste. However, they are good sources of bioactive compounds. Flour extracts from the unripe pulp, inner peel, and seed of two durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.) varieties, namely, Monthong and Chanee, were analyzed chemically to determine their total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory capacities. Chanee pulp (CPu) contained a higher TPC (5285.37 ± 517.65 mg GAE/g) than Monthong pulp (MPu), Monthong peel (MP), Monthong seed (MS), Chan

Crohn's disease and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in a patient with ectodermal dysplasia and immunodeficiency.

In this case report we will describe a rare association between anhyrotic ectodermal dysplasia (AED) and immunodeficiency and autoimmunity [in our case: Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) and Crohn disease]. AED is a rare congenital disorder characterized by sparse hair, abnormal teeth and anhidrosis due to lack of eccrine glands. The survey of 87 cases with (AED) revealed only one Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). AED has only two relevancies with immunodeficiency: (EDA-ID: Ectodermal Dysplasia Anhyrotic with Immunodeficiency) and APE-CED (Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy, Candidiasis and Ec…

Overlay removable partial dentures for a patient with ectodermal dysplasia: a clinical report.

The orofacial characteristics of ectodermal dysplasia include anodontia or hypodontia, hypoplastic conical teeth, underdevelopment of the alveolar ridges, frontal bossing, a depressed nasal bridge, protuberant lips, and hypotrichosis. Patients with this disease often need complex prosthetic treatment. The options for a definitive treatment plan may include fixed, removable, or implant-supported prostheses, singly or in combination. However, financial constraints and other priorities can prevent patients from choosing the most desirable treatment. This clinical report describes the diagnosis an…

[Anesthesia in a child presenting a anhydrotic ectodermic dysplasia associated with a multiminicore myopathy].

PURPOSE: To report the perioperative management of anesthesia and analgesia in a child presenting with the association of multiminicore myopathy (MMM) and anhydrotic ectodermic dysplasia (AED). CLINICAL FEATURES: An eight-year-old girl was admitted for elective orthopedic surgery of the lower limbs. AED is a congenital dermatosis characterized by the absence of sweating and subsequent problems with thermoregulation; in addition, maxillary hypoplasia and abnormal teeth can render intubation difficult. MMM is a rare congenital myopathy characterized by proximal muscle weakness, stable in time o

Structural hair shaft abnormalities in hypomelanosis of ito and other ectodermal dysplasias.

Hair samples from patients with different ectodermal dysplasias; hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, pachyonychia congenita, tricho-dento-osseous syndrome, tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome, and hypomelanosis of Ito were investigated using a scanning electron microscope. The hairs of the patients showed different structural abnormalities; twisted hairs, longitudinal grooves, trichorrhexis nodosa as well as variations in the hair caliber. Hair shaft abnormalities, as in our patients with tricho-dento-osseous syndrome, and hypomelanosis of Ito have so far not been described.

Childhood vulval lichen sclerosus in a patient with ectodermal dysplasia and uncombable hair.

An 11-year-old girl was diagnosed as having ectodermal dysplasia, with abnormalities of her nails, teeth, and hair noted from infancy. Her hair was unruly and investigations confirmed the changes seen in "cheveux incoiffables"-the uncombable hair syndrome. She also had atopy requiring treatment to control asthma and eczema. When she was 8 years old she developed vulval lichen sclerosus, which was controlled easily with early treatment. The coexistence of these conditions is discussed.

Osseointegrated implants in the oral habilitation of a boy with ectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

The most characteristic oral feature in ectodermal dysplasia is hypodontia. Children and adolescents suffering from ectodermal dysplasia often need extensive and complicated prosthetic treatment. The development of techniques for osseointegrated implants offers new possibilities for the oral habilitation of these children. This paper describes the oral habilitation of a boy with severe ectodermal dysplasia and where Brånemark osseointegrated implants have been used as part of the treatment. The patient was seen at the dental department at the age of 1.5 years. Two conically-shaped upper inciso…

[10-year review of prosthetic treatment of a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

The prosthetic treatment made in case of ectodermal hipohidrotic dysplasia with partial anodontia is described. After ten years the case is reviewed, taking into account, principally, the esthetics parameters, function and survival of the remaining teeth. In all of them an excellent result is observed, and the improvement of the patient in the nutritional and psychical range is confirmed.

[Ectodermal dysplasia with alopecia, a higher rate of chromosome breaks and normal dentition].

The authors present in two case-histories of unrelated female patients the characteristics of the syndrome of ectodermal dysplasia with alopecia and absence of hair and concurrent immunodeficiency and a higher number of chromosomal breaks. In the probands some other important symptoms of ectodermal dysplasias were lacking, such as disorders of dentition and absence of sweat glands. In this affection, hitherto not mentioned in our literature in conjunction with an increased number of chromosomal breaks, the author draws attention to genetic and prenatal genetic associations. He assumes an autos…

A previously undescribed ectodermal dysplasia of the tricho-odonto-onychial subgroup in a family.

We encountered two family members with a previously undescribed pure ectodermal dysplasia. The propositus exhibited hypotrichosis, hypodontia, focal linear dermal hypoplasia on the tip of her nose, irregular hyperpigmentation on her back, bilateral amastia and athelia, and mild nerve hearing loss. Her mother displayed similar characteristics, except for present, although hypoplastic, areolae and nipples. Both mother and daughter appeared to be clinically euhidrotic. Despite a comprehensive endocrine workup, the only abnormality detected was a suboptimal cortisol response to hypoglycemia in the…
