Ciguatoxins are voltage-gated selective algal toxins responsible for ciguatera fish poisoning. In this study we evaluate the toxicokinetics of one of the most common ciguatoxins found in the Pacific, the P-CTX-1, in rat after an oral or intraperitoneal (ip) dose of 0.26 μg/kg body weight. We report levels of ciguatoxin activity assessed over time in blood, urine and feces, and at 4 days in liver, muscle and brain, using the functional in vitro N2A cytotoxicity assay. Following exposure, the ciguatoxin activity exhibited a rapid systemic absorption that was followed by a bi-exponential decline,

Okinawa prefecture is a popular tourist destination due to its beaches and reefs. The reefs host a large variety of animals, including a number of venomous species. Because of the popularity of the reefs and marine activities, people are frequently in close contact with dangerous venomous species and, thus, are exposed to potential envenomation. Commonly encountered venomous animals throughout Okinawa include the invertebrate cone snail, sea urchin, crown-of-thorns starfish, blue-ringed octopus, box jellyfish, and fire coral. The vertebrates include the stonefish, lionfish, sea snake, and mora

We fully sequenced the genomes of 16 Vibrio cultivars isolated from eel larvae, plastic marine debris (PMD), the pelagic brown macroalga Sargassum, and seawater samples collected from the Caribbean and Sargasso Seas of the North Atlantic Ocean. Annotation and mapping of these 16 bacterial genome sequences to a PMD-derived Vibrio metagenome-assembled genome created for this study showcased vertebrate pathogen genes closely-related to cholera and non-cholera pathovars. Phenotype testing of cultivars confirmed rapid biofilm formation, hemolytic, and lipophospholytic activities, consistent with pa

The principal calcitonins used therapeutically are porcine, human (synthetic), salmon (synthetic), and eel. Of these substances, salmon calcitonin is the most potent (Reginster 1991). Injectable forms of salmon calcitonin were first indicated for use in the treatment of Paget's disease in the United States and later received an indication for use in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The injectable [intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous (SC)] formulation of salmon calcitonin, however, has been associated with a high rate of noncompliance in elderly patients. The recently approved nasal

The introduction of novel proteins into foods carries a risk of eliciting allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to the introduced protein. Therefore, decision trees for evaluation of the risk have been developed, the latest being proposed by WHO/FAO early in 2001. Proteins developed using modern biotechnology and derived from fish are being considered for use in food and other applications, and since allergy to fish is well established, a potential risk from such proteins to susceptible human beings exists. The overall aim of the study was to investigate the potential allergenicity of an

Myasthenia gravis is a spontaneously occurring autoimmune disease in which antibodies and lymphocytes are specifically reactive with nicotin … c determinants. Although human antibodies bind minimally to ACh receptors of the electric organs of eels and marine rays, lymphocyte reactivity to electric eel receptors is found in high incidence in myasthenic patients. This suggests that electric organ and mammalian muscle ACh receptors may share more lymphocyte-defined than serologically-defined ant …

Vibrio vulnificus is a pathogenic bacterium that causes disease in marine fish, affecting fish farming and human health worldwide. In May 2021, in the Bohai Bay region, a disease broke out in commercially farmed pearl gentian grouper (♀Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × ♂Epinephelus lanceolatus), causing huge economic losses. The diseased fish had skin lesions, water accumulation in their abdomens, and showed tissue and organ damage. V. vulnificus biotype 2 has been reported in eels and other marine fish, but it is less reported in pearl gentian grouper. In this study, the pathogenic strain isolated …

alpha-Bungarotoxin, a polypeptide of mol wt 8000 purified from the venom of Bungarus multicinctus, blocks irreversibly and specifically the excitation by cholinergic agonists on the isolated electroplax and on purified membrane fragments in vitro. The toxin also blocks the in vitro binding of decamethonium to a protein recently isolated from electric tissue. This observation strengthens our earlier conclusion that this protein is the cholinergic receptor macromolecule.

Hypoxia resulting from an imbalance of oxygen availability and consumption defines a metabolic cellular state with a profound impact on developmental processes, tissue maintenance, and the development of pathologies. Fluorescence imaging using genetically encoded reporters enables hypoxia and oxygen imaging with cellular resolution. Thereby unrestricted visualization of hypoxic cells and regions essentially relies on the availability of oxygen-independent fluorescent proteins like UnaG, isolated from the Japanese freshwater eel. Here, we describe the application of recently developed members o

The present study provides evidence that "in vitro" simple exposure of an aqueous solution of electric eel acetylcholinesterase (EeAChE; EC 3.1.1.7.) to cellular phone emission alters its enzymatic activity. This paper demonstrates, by combining different experimental techniques, that radio frequency (RF) radiations irreversibly affect the structural and biochemical characteristics of an important CNS enzyme. These results were obtained by using a commercial cellular phone to reproduce the reality of the human exposition. This experimental procedure provided surprising effects collected practi

In England and Wales, ovarian cancer is responsible for about 15 deaths per 100,000 women annually (NHS Executive 1999). It is estimated that only 5-10% of ovarian cancer cases have a hereditary basis (Watson et al. 1996, Hallowell 1999, Eeles & Powles 2000), although recent media excitement may have led some people to believe the odds are higher. The majority of these hereditary cases are thought to be caused by germline mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 cancer susceptibility genes (Antoniou et al. 2000, Berchuk et al. 1999). This article will examine current knowledge about BRCA1 and BRCA2 geneti

Lately it has been reported that calcitonin is effective for the treatment of hypercalcemia and for the relief of pain caused by osteolytic bone metastasis. Thus we have studied the analgesic effect of synthetic eel calcitonin (ECT) on 8 breast cancer patients with bone metastases. ECT was administered in the dose of 20 or 40 I.U. twice a day intramuscularly for 7 days without other antineoplastic treatment, and the laboratory data of its analgesic effect and change has been examined. An analgesic effect was obtained on all 8 patients who had received ECT. However, an improvement of radiologic

Electrical activity of conducting membranes is produced by transient changes in membrane conductance to Na and K ions. These time- and voltage-dependent conductance changes are controlled by intrinsic proteins that span the membrane and provide a pathway for ion movement. Several lines of evidence indicate that the membrane conducting sites are indeed largely or entirely protein structures. Proteolytic enzymes, when applied on unmyelinated axonal membrane such as the gar olfactory nerve or on eel electroplax, completely destroyed tetrodotoxin (TTX) binding. Treatment of the internal face of th

Pulsed electrolysis and Cu-Ag tandem catalysis are both promising strategies for electrochemical CO2 reduction, yet their interplay remains unclear. Here, we show that pulsed operation does not preserve the as-prepared Cu-Ag catalyst and instead generates a dynamic bimetallic working state in situ. During prolonged electrolysis, the catalyst evolves toward a favorable selectivity profile with significantly increased CO formation, persistent ethylene production, and suppressed hydrogen, methane, and formate pathways. Correlative SEM/EDS, XPS, ToF-SIMS, ICP-MS, and STEM-EELS show that this behav…

Over the past few years, our understanding of the evolution of limbs has been improved by important new discoveries in the fossil record. Additionally, rapid progress has been made in identifying the molecular basis of vertebrate limb development. It is now possible to integrate these two areas of research in order to identify the molecular developmental mechanisms underlying the evolution of paired appendages in vertebrates. After the origin of paired appendages, several vertebrate lineages reduced or eliminated fins and limbs and returned to the limbless condition. Examples include eels, cae…

Marine and freshwater animals can cause injury to humans by biting, stinging, being poisonous to eat, and causing infections. Biting aquatic animals in Florida include sharks, barracudas, alligators, and moray eels. Devitalized tissue should be débrided, and vascular, neurologic, and tendinous injuries should be repaired. Radiographs should be obtained to examine the injury sit for fractures and retained foreign bodies (teeth). The spines of stingrays and marine catfish can cause soft tissue injury and infection. The spine has a recurved, serrated shape that may cause further injury and break …
