Postoperative analgesia by percutaneous electrical stimulation in gynecology and obstetrics.

Percutaneous electrical stimulation (PES) for relief of acute postoperative pain was applied in 10 patients after cesarean section and in 20 women who had undergone various gynecological operations. Thirty other women, subjected to identical surgical interventions, served as controls. In the latter group, the electrodes were attached to a nonfunctioning apparatus. In all patients, including the controls, the two electrodes were introduced intradermally, one on each side of the incision. Implantation was carried out at the end of the surgical procedure while the patient was still anesthetized,

A microprocessor controlled timing device for cardiac electrical stimulation.

A microcomputer controlled device for delivering precisely timed stimuli to cardiac chambers is described. Stimulation patterns are determined by software, rather than hardware design, resulting in enhanced flexibility. Additionally, by providing timing inputs to conventional laboratory stimulators, this instrument can convert these limited use devices into ones capable of generating complex cardiac stimulation patterns at moderate cost.

Adjustable nonimplantable electrical stimulators for correction of urinary incontinence.

Investigations of functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the closing muscles in the lower urinary tract using nonimplantable electrical stimulators have reached the final stage. The optimal stimuli parameters were chosen on the basis of neurophysiological studies of the urinary tract and urodynamic measurements of mechanical response to electrical stimulation. According to these findings, two electronic systems for FES have been developed. An adjustable system for stimulation of the urethral closing mechanism using vaginal or anal plugs. The external unit of the stimulator contains a gener

Multiple point electrical stimulation of ulnar and median nerves.

A computer-assisted method of isolating single motor units (MUs) by multiple point stimulation (MPS) of peripheral nerves is described. MPS was used to isolate 10-30 single MUs from thenar and hypothenar muscles of normal subjects and patients with entrapment neuropathies, with the original purpose of obtaining a more representative mean motor unit potential for estimating the number of MUs in a muscle. The two important results that evolved from MPS however, were: (1) in the absence of 'alternation' MUs were recruited in an orderly pattern from small to large, and from longer to shorter laten

Urinary incontinence. Treatment with electrical stimulation of the pelvic floor.

Electrical pelvic floor stimulation may be administered either externally by the transrectal tampon or internally with the implantable pelvic floor stimulator. This treatment modality requires intact pelvic floor innervation and therefore is unsuccessful in patients with pelvic floor denervation. Pelvic floor stimulation has been successful in patients with stress and with congenital, iatrogenic, and postoperative urinary incontinence.

THE RESPONSE OF THE ISOLATED SKIN OF RATS TO DRUGS AND ELECTRICAL STIMULATION.

A new method of transmural stimulation (Hellmann, 1963b) has been used to examine the responses of the rat panniculus carnosus, a skeletal muscle which lines the skin. This preparation responded to drugs and to electrical excitation in the same way as other mammalian skeletal muscle preparations. The relaxation phase, when examined with fast recording systems, was complicated by what appeared to be the "tone" of the muscle.

Layer-specific electric fields and effective conductivity in nonhuman primates during transcranial electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is widely used to modulate brain activity in a safe and non-invasive manner. tES generates weak electric fields in cortical tissues, which can modulate membrane potential and alter the timing of neural spikes. These electric fields interact with cortical circuits in a layer-specific manner; however, the distribution of tES-generated electric fields across cortical layers remains poorly understood. Because cortical layers differ in cytoarchitecture, electric fields are likely not uniform and may differ across layers. However, direct in vivo

Lack of electrical interference between spinal cord stimulators and other implanted electrical pulse devices.

Spinal cord stimulators (SCSs) have been used for decades to treat chronic pain. SCSs are often used to treat patients with chronic back pain caused by failed back surgery syndrome, patients with complex regional pain syndrome, or individuals who are not candidates for surgery. SCSs are a relative contraindication in patients with another electrical pulse device. We present 3 patients who received SCS despite having another implant in place. There was no interaction between devices. The first case was a patient with failed back surgery syndrome who had an implantable cardiac defibrillator and

A Magneto-Electric Synergistic Bioelectronic Suture for Antibacterial Therapy, Wireless Electrical Stimulation, and Biomechanical Monitoring.

Electroactive sutures show great potential for surgical wound management but remain limited by wired power supplies, unreliable biomechanical energy harvesting, and inadequate antibacterial performance. Here, we develop an electromagnetic induction-enabled electroactive antibacterial suture (SDTP) via hierarchical polydopamine-mediated assembly of tannic acid (TA) and polypyrrole (PPy). TA functions as both a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent and a dopant to form a dense conductive PPy network. Under a rotating magnetic field (RMF), the implanted suture wirelessly generates controllable micro

Electrically conductive MEH-PPV:PCL electrospun nanofibres for electrical stimulation of rat PC12 pheochromocytoma cells.

The purpose of this study was to prepare an electrically conducting poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) based nanofibrous scaffold and to investigate the synergetic effect of nanofibre structure and electrical stimulation on neuronal growth for possible use in nerve repair. Nanofibres were produced by electrospinning of blended MEH-PPV with polycaprolactone (PCL) at a ratio of 20 : 80, 40 : 60, 50 : 50 and 60 : 40 (v/v). A better electrical conductivity was achieved by using core-sheath structured nanofibres of PCL (core) and MEH-PPV (sheath) produced using th

Gastric Emptying in Response to Neural Gastric Electric Stimulation in an Acute Porcine Model.

BACKGROUND: Delayed gastric conduit emptying (DGCE) is a common complication following esophagectomy-associated gastric conduit surgery and is often resistant to conventional treatments. Neural gastric electrical stimulation (NGES) is a potential approach to managing DGCE by generating propulsive gastric contractions through timed bursts of high-frequency, multisite stimulation. This study evaluates the efficacy of NGES in increasing gastric emptying in an acute porcine vagally denervated postsurgical conduit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six anaesthetized pigs underwent a staged interventions to a

Analgesia Using Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation in Office Bladder Chemodenervation, a Randomized Controlled Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Office bladder chemodenervation, performed via cystoscopy with intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX) injections, is a common treatment for overactive bladder/urge urinary incontinence. Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) has shown to provide analgesia during office hysteroscopy. Adjuvant analgesia using TENS during bladder chemodenervation has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: The primary outcome is a clinically significant (10-mm) difference in pain visual analog scale (VAS) measurements during injections for chemodenervation using active TENS compared with placebo TEN

Effectiveness of combined modulated ultrasound and electric current stimulation to treat diabetic foot ulcers.

OBJECTIVE: The use of combined ultrasound and electrostimulation (CUSECS) as an adjunct therapy for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) is a relatively new concept. This study aimed to investigate if combined ultrasound and electrostimulation is an effective adjunctive treatment for hard-to-heal DFUs when compared with standard wound care. METHODS: A randomised controlled pilot study design was used. Patients with hard-to-heal DFUs from two centres were sequentially randomised. For 8 weeks, the experimental group received CUSECS and standard wound care treatment twice a week. The control group receiv
