Mechanisms and prevention of acid reflux induced laryngospasm in seizing rats.

OBJECTIVE: Recent animal work and limited clinical data have suggested that laryngospasm may be involved in the cardiorespiratory collapse s … temic kainic acid to acutely induce seizure activity. We recorded pH in the esophagus, respiration, electrocorticography activity, and measured the liquid volume in the stomach postmortem. We performed the following three interventions to attempt to prevent acid reflux or laryngospasm and gain insights into mechanisms: fasting animals for 12 h, severing the gastric ne …

Electrophysiological evidence on epileptiform activity enhanced by electrical stimulation of teeth in rats.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of electrical stimulation (ES) of tooth on penicillin-induced epileptiform activity in rats. Experiment was realized on 24 adult male Sprague Dawley rats. Rats were assigned three groups [stimulation group (SG), penicillin group (PG), and penicillin+stimulation group (PSG)]. In SG, ES was only applied. Ten pulses of electrical current were delivered to the teeth for a duration of 2 milliseconds at 1-second intervals from a stimulator. Currents were applied in the range of 40-240 μA with 40 μA steps. Electrocorticography (ECoG) recordin…

Whole-brain millisecond-scale effective connectivity of auditory and visual naming.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical mapping studies in epilepsy and brain tumor surgery have informed neurobiological models of speech. However, a comprehensive model requires clarification of when, for how long, and in what directions cortical regions transmit information to support processes ranging from perception and comprehension to lexical retrieval and articulation. We aimed to characterize whole-brain patterns of directional neural information flow during auditory and visual naming. METHODS: We studied 127 patients who performed auditory and picture naming tasks during intracranial EEG recordings, an

A modular and flexible pipeline for intraoperative electrode reconstruction and localization in patients with brain lesions.

Intraoperative intracranial electrophysiological recordings provide unique access to human cortical dynamics but remain difficult to translate across patients due to inconsistent localization of transient surface electrodes. Unlike chronic implantations, intraoperative electrodes are placed transiently, rarely visible on imaging, and often inconsistently documented. We present an open-source imaging pipeline, ALIGNER (Advanced Localization and Imaging Guidance for Neurosurgical Electrode Recording), designed to reconstruct intraoperative surface electrode array placements and quantitatively ma

Behavioral engagement and stimulus regularities coordinate auditory-prefrontal network activity.

The ability to detect deviations from expected sensory input is fundamental for adaptive behavior. We recorded electrocorticographic activity from the auditory (AC) and prefrontal (PFC) cortices of behaving macaques during an auditory oddball task to probe the cortical dynamics of predictive processing. Repetition of standard stimuli evoked suppression and facilitation in AC and strong low-frequency (2 Hz) enhancement in PFC, accompanied by bidirectional delta-band GC-defined interactions indicative of a shared predictive state. Deviant stimuli triggered earlier AC responses followed by PFC ac

Frontotemporal bursting supports human working memory.

Cortical neural activity varies dynamically during memory periods, when relevant information is not present in the environment. But how those dynamics are related to a code defining working memory (WM) performance is not known. Recent data shows brief bursts of activity in the high gamma (70-140 Hz) and beta (12-30 Hz) band within non-human primate lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) is associated with WM processing. However, WM may be related to activity within a network of frontal executive and posterior sensory areas involved in stimulus perception. Here we tested whether gamma and beta burstin

Category-selective neural decreases in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex as defined with intracranial recordings.

Visual recognition is supported in humans by category-selective neural activity in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). While category-selectivity is generally defined as an increase in neural activity (i.e., larger responses) for a given visual category of interest, category-selective decreases have also been reported yet generally ignored. Here we use electrophysiological intracerebral recordings across the VOTC of a large human sample (N = 140; >11k recording sites) to characterize and compare category-selective neural decreases relative to increases, in response to images of faces.

Relationship Between Brain Activity and Impaired Consciousness in Frontal Lobe Seizures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impaired consciousness in epilepsy negatively affects quality of life. Previous work has focused on temporal lobe seizures, where cortical slow waves are associated with depressed subcortical arousal and impaired consciousness. However, it is unknown whether frontal lobe seizures also show cortical slow waves or a different activity pattern with impaired consciousness. METHODS: Intracranial EEG (icEEG) recordings from patients at 3 centers were retrospectively assessed to identify seizures originating in the frontal lobe. Seizures were classified as focal preserved

Cardiac autonomic responses to cortical electrical stimulation: a SEEG study.

Recent growing neuroimaging evidence support that a set of cortical regions - the central autonomic network - is involved in autonomic control, but its functional organization remains unclear. We studied the direct autonomic cardiac effects produced by 1500 direct cortical electrical stimulations in 43 patients with epilepsy (32.8 ± 8.6 years old, 19 females) undergoing intracerebral recordings during presurgical evaluation. The time course of RR interval (RRI) reactivity and its variability were studied. Nearly half (48.6 %, n = 729) of the cortical stimulations resulted in a cardiac response

TMS provokes target-dependent intracranial rhythms across human cortical and subcortical sites.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is believed to alter ongoing neural activity and cause circuit-level changes in brain function. While the electrophysiological effects of TMS have been extensively studied with scalp electroencephalography (EEG), this approach generally evaluates low-frequency neural activity at the cortical surface. However, TMS can be safely used in patients with intracranial electrodes (iEEG), allowing for direct assessment of deeper and more localized oscillatory responses across the frequency spectrum. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Our study used iEEG to unders

Distinct patterns of interictal intracranial EEG in focal cortical dysplasia type I and II.

OBJECTIVE: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is the most common malformation causing refractory focal epilepsy. Surgical removal of the entire dysplastic cortex is crucial for achieving a seizure-free outcome. Precise presurgical distinctions between FCD types by neuroimaging are difficult, mainly in patients with normal magnetic resonance imaging findings. However, the FCD type is important for planning the extent of surgical approach and counselling. METHODS: This study included patients with focal drug-resistant epilepsy and definite histopathological FCD type I or II diagnoses who underwent

Coupling between slow waves and sharp-wave ripples engages distributed neural activity during sleep in humans.

Hippocampal-dependent memory consolidation during sleep is hypothesized to depend on the synchronization of distributed neuronal ensembles, organized by the hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (SWRs, 80 to 150 Hz), subcortical/cortical slow-wave activity (SWA, 0.5 to 4 Hz), and sleep spindles (SP, 7 to 15 Hz). However, the precise role of these interactions in synchronizing subcortical/cortical neuronal activity is unclear. Here, we leverage intracranial electrophysiological recordings from the human hippocampus, amygdala, and temporal and frontal cortices to examine activity modulation and cross-r

The neural basis of rapid unfamiliar face individuation with human intracerebral recordings.

Rapid individuation of conspecifics' faces is ecologically important in the human species, whether the face belongs to a familiar or unfamiliar individual. Here we tested a large group (N = 69) of epileptic patients implanted with intracerebral electrodes throughout the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). We used a frequency-tagging visual stimulation paradigm optimized to objectively measure face individuation with direct neural recordings. This enabled providing an extensive map of the significantly larger neural responses to upright than to inverted unfamiliar faces, i.e. reflecting vi
