[Research on electrooculography artifact removal from electroencephalography signals based on frequency slice wavelet transform].

To address the strong contamination of single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) signals by electrooculography (EOG) artifacts during acquisition, this paper proposes an EOG artifact suppression method based on an improved frequency slice wavelet transform (FSWT). First, the EEG signal is adaptively decomposed into frequency-slice components using FSWT. Based on the low-frequency energy bursts induced by eye blinks, a robust median absolute deviation (MAD)-based threshold is used to localize artifact-contaminated intervals. Subsequently, only within the detected artifact-contaminated interva…

Electroencephalography Searchlight Decoding Reveals Person- and Place-specific Responses for Semantic Category and Familiarity.

Proper names are linguistic expressions referring to unique entities, such as individual people or places. This sets them apart from other words like common nouns, which refer to generic concepts. And yet, despite both being individual entities, one's closest friend and one's favorite city are intuitively associated with very different pieces of knowledge-face, voice, social relationship, autobiographical experiences for the former, and mostly visual and spatial information for the latter. Neuroimaging research has revealed the existence of both domain-general and domain-specific brain correla

Aberrant Functional Connectivity and Brain Network Organization in High-Schizotypy Individuals: An Electroencephalography Study.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Oscillatory synchrony plays a crucial role in establishing functional connectivity across distinct brain regions. Within the realm of schizophrenia, suggested to be a neuropsychiatric disconnection syndrome, discernible aberrations arise in the organization of brain networks. We aim to investigate whether the resting-state functional network is already altered in healthy individuals with high schizotypy traits, highlighting the pivotal influence of brain rhythms in driving brain network alterations. STUDY DESIGN: Two-minute resting-state electroencephalography recor…

Comparative electroencephalography analysis: Marathon runners during tapering versus sedentary controls reveals no significant differences.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies described various adaptive neuroplastic brain changes associated with physical activity (PA). EEG studies focused mostly on effects during or shortly after short bouts of exercise. This is the first study to investigate the capability of EEG to display PA-induced long-lasting plasticity in runners compared to a sedentary control group. METHODS: Thirty trained runners and 30 age- and sex-matched sedentary controls (SC) were included as a subpopulation of the ReCaP (Running effects on Cognition and Plasticity) study. PA was measured with the International Physical

Early processed electroencephalography for the monitoring of deeply sedated mechanically ventilated critically ill patients.

BACKGROUND: Deep sedation may be indicated in the intensive care unit (ICU) for the management of acute organ failure, but leads to sedative-induced delirium. Whether processed electroencephalography (p-EEG) is useful in this setting is unclear. AIM: To describe the PSI index in deeply sedated critically ill patients with acute organ failure, and to examine a potential association between low PSI values and ICU delirium. [Correction added on 16 October 2024, after first online publication: Aim subsection in Abstract has been added on this version.] METHODS: We conducted a single-centre observ…

Evaluating Injury Severity in Neonatal Encephalopathy Using Automated Quantitative Electroencephalography Analysis: A Pilot Study.

Quantitative analysis of electroencephalography (qEEG) is a potential source of biomarkers for neonatal encephalopathy (NE). However, prior studies using qEEG in NE were limited in their generalizability due to individualized techniques for calculating qEEG features or labor-intensive pre-selection of EEG data. We piloted a fully automated method using commercially available software to calculate the suppression ratio (SR), absolute delta power, and relative delta, theta, alpha, and beta power from EEG of neonates undergoing 72 h of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for NE between April 20, 2018, a…

Resting-state electroencephalography of neural oscillation and functional connectivity patterns in late-life depression.

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of late-life depression (LLD) are highly heterogeneous. Currently, abnormal characteristics of resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) power and functional connectivity are considered trait markers of depressive symptoms in major depression. However, the relationship between EEG spectral features and functional connectivity in LLD remains unknown. METHODS: Forty-one patients with LLD and 44 participants without depression underwent an eyes-closed resting-state EEG. EEG power spectra, alpha asymmetry, and functional connectivity were calculated and an…

Electroencephalography and brain magnetic resonance imaging in asphyxia comparing cooled and non-cooled infants.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to establish any differences in the predictive value of EEG and MRI for outcome in infants treated and not-treated with therapeutic hypothermia (HT) for perinatal asphyxia. We hypothesize that they are equally predictive and that combining both has the highest predictive value. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively compared data of infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who received HT (n = 45) between September 2009 and December 2013 with those of infants with HIE born between January 2004 and August 2009, before HT was available (NT, n = 37). Relationship between electroencephalography and magnetic resonance imaging findings after hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy at term.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Electroencephalography (EEG) and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are frequently performed in these infants, but the prognostic value of the combined use of EEG and MRI needs additional exploration. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in neonates with HIE, the role of early EEG and conventional MRI in the prediction of infants at risk for persistent encephalopathy at 18 months of age. Thirty-four term infants with HIE were enrolled in this prospective study. EEG was recorded within the f…

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: role of electroencephalography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) had largely disappeared from the United States because of nearly universal measles vaccination, b … resonance imaging findings were nonspecific and could have been compatible with HIV encephalopathy. Electroencephalography was characteristic of SSPE, showing high-voltage, periodic slow-wave complexes and background slowing. The diagnosis of SSPE was confirmed by brain biopsy or high measles antibody titers in the cerebrospinal fluid.

A subject-specific mechanistic model of affect links electroencephalography, cardiorespiratory feedback, and monoaminergic dynamics.

INTRODUCTION: Affective experience emerges from interactions among cortical activity, bodily physiology, and contextual interpretation, yet the mechanisms linking these processes remain incompletely understood. Although EEG-based studies have advanced affect decoding, many data-driven approaches provide limited mechanistic insight into inter-individual variability. We developed a subject-specific, hypothesis-generating computational framework linking EEG-derived cortical activity and cardiorespiratory dynamics to subjective affect through putative neuromodulatory processes. METHODS: The frame

Recurrent Processing Dynamics in Occluded Object Recognition Revealed by Electroencephalography and Deep Neural Networks.

The human visual system excels at recognizing occluded objects, yet the temporal dynamics of recurrent processing in this task remain unclear. Using high-temporal-resolution Electroencephalography (EEG), backward masking, and deep neural networks (DNNs), we employed a two-stage paradigm to investigate recurrent processing in occluded object recognition. In Experiment 1, we manipulated occlusion levels and applied multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) and temporal generalization analysis (TGA) to investigate the neural differences in object recognition across varying degrees of occlusion. In Exp…
