Perinatal maternal ethanol effects on pregnant mice and on offspring viability and growth: influences of exposure time and weaning diet.

C57BL/6 mice were maintained on liquid diets containing 27.5% ethanol-derived calories beginning on gestational day 12. For one group, the liquid diet was replaced with laboratory chow on the morning of gestational day 18, approximately 24 hr before delivery. For a second group, the diet was continued for 7 days postnatally. Two additional groups were pair-fed isocaloric sucrose diets, and a final group was maintained on normal laboratory chow. The mice consumed sufficient amounts of diet to provide near 30 g ethanol/kg/day during pregnancy and slightly greater amounts during the first postpar

Self-starvation in a diabetic adolescent.

The case of a 14-year-old girl who began food refusal shortly after the development of diabetes mellitus is presented. Her dieting eliminated the need for insulin and urine testing and, as a result, allowed the patient to deny that she had diabetes. Although her course resembled that seen in primary anorexia nervosa, this patient was felt to have atypical anorexia nervosa, in this case an extreme form of illness denial probably associated with psychosis.

[Cow's milk protein allergy].

Cow's milk protein allergy affects gastrointestinal morphology and function. The clinical symptoms depend on the localisation in the gut and on the type of the allergic reaction. In some patients cutaneous, respiratory and even urinary symptoms may also be present. As the condition is almost limited to the first year of life, transitory elimination of cow's milk from the diet is the treatment of choice. A number of patients with intractable diarrhoea suffers from undiagnosed cow's milk protein allergy.

High Dietary Cation and Anion Difference Enhanced Renal Response to an Acute Acid Load of Lactating Goat Fed Under Tropical Conditions.

High ambient temperature (HTa) in tropical conditions leads to evaporative heat dissipation by panting in lactating dairy goats. This panting causes respiratory hypocapnia, which increases the renal excretion of buffer molecules including sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate. In response, renal acid excretion decreases to preserve acidity. Besides hypocapnia, lactation and HTa could further deplete buffer molecules, enhancing acid preservation. This current study restored buffer molecules using high dietary cation and anion difference (DCAD) regimen and hypothesized that renal acid excretion dur

The uremic toxin oxythiamine causes functional thiamine deficiency in end-stage renal disease by inhibiting transketolase activity.

Decreased transketolase activity is an unexplained characteristic of patients with end-stage renal disease and is linked to impaired metabolic and immune function. Here we describe the discovery of a link to impaired functional activity of thiamine pyrophosphate cofactor through the presence, accumulation, and pyrophosphorylation of the thiamine antimetabolite oxythiamine in renal failure. Plasma oxythiamine was significantly increased by 4-fold in patients receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and 15-fold in patients receiving hemodialysis immediately before the dialysis session

Diet in hidradenitis suppurativa: a review of published and lay literature.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurring, inflammatory skin disorder resulting in skin abscesses and sinus tracts of the skin folds. Hidradenitis suppurativa remains a disease with limited treatment options. Management of disease activity with dietary modification has been of considerable interest to the HS patient community. Limited evidence exists to support dietary changes for treatment of HS. Strategies such as eliminating dairy products, limiting simple carbohydrate and sugar intake, and avoiding nightshades (Solanaceae) and foods containing brewer's yeast have been reported

Development of atopic disease in babies whose mothers were receiving exclusion diet during pregnancy--a randomized study.

In a prospective, randomized study, we have monitored the effect of maternal abstention from cow's milk and egg on the development of atopy in babies. Two hundred twelve women were followed from midpregnancy. We report the occurrences of allergies in their babies up to 18 months of age, as assessed by skin prick testing, determination of serum IgE, questionnaires, and blinded physical examination by a pediatric allergist. Whatever the method that was used, there was no statistically significant difference between babies whose mothers received the "diet" or the "nondiet." Other factors known to

n-3 essential fatty acid and vitamin D supplementation improve skeletal health in laying hens.

Keel bone fractures and osteoporosis are prevalent and damaging skeletal issues in the laying hen industry. There is a large interest in improving bone quality parameters to reduce or eliminate these conditions, thus improving bird welfare. Both essential fatty acids (EFA) and vitamin D can play a role in bone metabolism. The hypothesis of this study was that birds supplemented with lower n-6:n-3 EFA ratio or vitamin D would have improved bone properties compared to a control diet. A total of 3,520 Lohmann Brown-Lite pullets were used in this study. Pullets were housed on the floor from 0 to 1

Severe dystrophy in DiGeorge syndrome.

We present the case history of a 3-year-old girl who was examined because of severe dystrophy. In the background, cow's milk allergy was found, but her body weight was unchanged after eliminating milk from her diet. Other types of malabsorption were excluded. Based on nasal regurgitation and facial dysmorphisms, the possibility of DiGeorge syndrome was suspected and was confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. The authors suggest a new feature associated with DiGeorge syndrome.

Effects of severe and marginal lipotrope deficiency on response of postnatal rats to infection.

Female rats were fed from weaning on 1 of 4 different diets varying in lipotrope content (I, deficient; II, marginal; III, moderate; and IV, complete). Offspring littered to these dams were divided into 2 groups at weaning, one of which was continued on the mothers' diet; the other was fed the complete diet (IV). Birth and weaning weights were low in dietary groups I and II, and when the rats were infected with Salmonella typhimurium at about 100 days after weaning, mortality was high in these 2 groups. A switch to diet IV at weaning corrected body weight in groups II and III but not in group

1H-NMR metabolomics response to a realistic diet contamination with the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol: Effect of probiotics supplementation.

Low-level contamination of food and feed by deoxynivalenol (DON) is unavoidable. We investigated the effects of subclinical treatment with DON, and supplementation with probiotic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii I1079 as a preventive strategy in piglets. Thirty-six animals were randomly assigned to either a control diet, a diet contaminated with DON (3 mg/kg), a diet supplemented with yeast (4 × 109 CFU/kg), or a DON-contaminated diet supplemented with yeast, for four weeks. Plasma and tissue samples were collected for biochemical analysis,1H-NMR untargeted metabolomics, and histology.

Lactose intolerance: myths and facts. An update.

Lactose is the main carbohydrate present in human milk. It is a disaccharide made up of glucose and galactose. It is produced in the mammary glands, regardless of maternal diet. In addition to providing energy, it is the only source of dietary galactose, necessary for macromolecule synthesis, including oligosaccharides, glycoproteins, and glycolipids. It favors calcium, magnesium, and zinc absorption and retention. Its digestion by lactase and subsequent absorption occurs in the small intestine. Lactase deficiency may be classified into congenital primary (very rare), late-onset primary or sec

[Measurement of intestinal permeability to sugars: application in the diagnosis of celiac disease and cow's milk protein enteropathy].

Intestinal permeability to macromolecules was studied by measuring differential urinary elimination of two orally ingested non-metabolizable sugars of different molecular size, mannitol and lactulose. In 25 control children, mannitol and lactulose urinary elimination were 16.30 +/- 5.77% and 0.33 +/- 0.10% of ingested dose, respectively, with a mean lactulose/mannitol (M/M) urinary ratio of 2.73 +/- 0.70%. In 7 celiac children, L/M ratio exhibited a significant rise: 8.53 +/- 2.54% (p less than 0.001). In 7 children with cow's milk sensitive enteropathy under exclusion diet, L/M ratio was norm

Does food intolerance play a role in juvenile chronic arthritis?

Sixty children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) have been examined at the paediatric rheumatology out-patient clinic in Maastricht, of whom three ultimately appeared to have a food intolerance. In one of these three patients, there appeared to be a relationship with joint complaints. In the course of the elimination/challenge tests which were conducted, severe painful swelling of the knee occurred rapidly after each challenge. Three challenges were carried out with the same result each time. Since the symptoms did not disappear entirely following elimination of milk, it was concluded that

Tissue stores of beta-carotene are not conserved for later use as a source of vitamin A during compromised vitamin A status in mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Vitamin A (VA) deficiency remains a serious problem in the world today. Current approaches to preventing or treating VA deficiency, including dietary intervention with provitamin A compounds, rely on the body converting ingested beta-carotene (betaC) to VA. However, it is not known whether betaC that is already in the tissues can be used as a source of VA to prevent deficiency. The objectives of these studies were to determine whether tissue betaC stores are converted to VA when the Mongolian gerbils have low VA status and whether previously fed betaC is retained in the tissues for later conve

Synthetic low and high fat diets for the study of atherosclerosis in the mouse.

Diets currently used to produce atherosclerotic lesions in mice are often undefined and cause accumulation of fat in the liver and gallstone formation. Therefore, synthetic low and high fat diets of known composition were formulated in this study. A synthetic diet containing 50% sucrose, 15% cocoa butter, 1% cholesterol, and 0.5% sodium cholate was found to produce a depression in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and an elevation of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in the atherosclerosis-susceptible strain, C57BL/6J. This diet was

Methods for Individualized Determination of Methylmercury Elimination Rate and De-Methylation Status in Humans Following Fish Consumption.

Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure via fish in the diet remains a priority public health concern. Individual variation in response to a given MeHg exposure and the biotransformation of MeHg that follows complicate our understanding of this issue. MeHg elimination from the human body occurs slowly (elimination rate (kel) approximately 0.01 day(-1) or approximately 70 days half-life [t1/2]) and is a major determinant of the Hg body burden resulting from fish consumption. The underlying mechanisms that control MeHg elimination from the human body remain poorly understood. We describe here improved met
