A combined third and fourth branchial arch anomaly: clinical and embryological implications.

Embryological abnormalities of the branchial apparatus present an interesting diagnostic and surgical challenge. Thymic cysts are a rare form of branchial apparatus anomaly, resulting from abnormal development of the third pharyngeal pouch. We present two cases of a thymic cyst coexisting with a non recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve (NRILN), two anomalies that to our knowledge have not been associated previously. A possible embryological explication for this double abnormality is discussed, while the clinical implications of this association are presented.

Anomalies of the inferior vena cava and renal veins: embryologic and surgical considerations.

Anomalies of the inferior vena cava and renal veins occur infrequently but if unidentified can lead to significant morbidity during surgical exploration. An understanding of the embryologic development of the vena cava and its tributaries is necessary to understand the genesis of these sometimes complex anomalies and their accompanying anatomic variants. Newer radiologic modalities in the form of spiral computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional reconstruction of spiral CT allow clear definition of the anatomy of these anomalies. Variations in the embryologic evolution of the vena cava dic

Modern imaging of petrous bone malformations: improvement for clinical-embryological correlations.

The rapid perfecting of modern diagnostic imaging during the past decade has provided several new ways to explore ear malformations. Helical computed tomography, three-dimensional (3D) reformations, virtual endoscopy and thin-sliced 3D magnetic resonance imaging constitute the most important recent progress. In parallel, conventional morphologic studies and modern teratologic experimentation give rise to new concepts relative to ear development. The molecular and genetic control of ear morphogenesis is becoming better known, and several malformations can be considered as a consequence of a dis

Aberrant left brachiocephalic vein: CT imaging findings and embryologic correlation.

Computed tomography was utilized to evaluate aberrant left brachiocephalic vein (ALBCV), an infrequently discussed congenital vascular anomaly among Chinese people. Associated vascular variation and possible embryonic correlation are discussed. Since 1990, a total of 14 cases of ALBCV have been reported in patients receiving CT scan of chest, and was mainly an incidental diagnosis. One case was confirmed angiographically and two others were confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Emphasis was placed on the entry of the azygos vein into the superior vena cava (SVC), the length of the SVC, and

Embryological origin for autism: developmental anomalies of the cranial nerve motor nuclei.

The underlying brain injury that leads to autism has been difficult to identify. The diagnostic criteria of the disease are not readily associated with any brain region or system, nor are they mimicked by vascular accidents, tumors, or degenerative neurological diseases occurring in adults. Fortuitously, a recent report of autism induced by thalidomide exposure provides evidence that the disease originates by an injury at the time of closure of the neural tube. The human data suggest that the initiating lesion includes the motor cranial nerve nuclei. To test this hypothesis, we first examined

[The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and osteogenesis imperfecta. A study of its embryologic development].

Although the most common oral manifestation of osteogenesis imperfecta is dentinogenesis imperfecta, several authors have described jaw fractures and radiolucent bone lesions associated with this disease. The authors, after reporting the main features of this disease, compare the cranial embryologic growth in twice fetuses of a 15 weeks old: one of these with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Abdominal wall defect associated with persistent cloaca. The embryologic clues in autopsy.

Three stillborn fetuses are reported in which an abdominal wall defect was associated with defects in the urogenital and anal region. Autopsy of these fetuses provided clues indicative of how and where the embryonic development went wrong. The malformation involved a disturbance of the cell deposition process, occurring in the caudal part of the embryo. During the cell deposition process, which takes place in the neural crest and the body wall placode, ectodermal cells are added to the mesodermal compartment of the embryo, thus contributing to the anlagen of several structures, including the v

Clinical embryology in the United States: current landscape and considerations for professional development and standardization.

Clinical embryologists play a central role in assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratories and contribute directly to technical processes that influence treatment outcomes. As ART utilization and technological complexity increase, the responsibilities and scope of practice of clinical embryologists have expanded. Despite this role, clinical embryology in the United States lacks a nationally standardized educational pathway, competency framework, or profession-specific licensure model. This expert opinion reviews the current landscape of clinical embryology practice in the United States,…

Identities of an embryology journal in a molecular age; or, How Development got its name.

Journals build identities to attract authors and subscribers. Name changes make the stakes explicit. This article explains how the plain Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology (JEEM) turned into the glossy Development in 1987. Newly opened archives reveal long-term negotiations that illuminate transformations in periodical publishing and in disciplinary politics. Founded in 1953, JEEM welcomed descriptive as well as experimental research on animal development, but the rise of molecular approaches called into question title and scope. In 1970, the editors refocused on mechanisms of d…

Foundations of Myelomeningocele Management: History, Embryology, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Myelomeningoceles Through the Sheffield Study.

Myelomeningocele is a common neural tube defect caused by failure of the closure of the posterior neuropore during neurulation. This defect, described as a neural placode (flattened neural tissue), manifests as an open spinal lesion most frequently found in the thoracolumbar region. Throughout history, clinicians have worked to better understand this condition, leading to a stepwise increase in understanding of the disease. Complications associated with myelomeningocele include cognitive and functional neurological deficits, hydrocephalus, Chiari II malformation, bladder dysfunction, meningiti

The mendosal suture of the occipital bone: occurrence in Indian population, embryology and clinical significance.

The occipital bone is ontogenetically and functionally unique when compared to the other bones of the skull in humans and other mammalian cousins. The occipital bone develops from six ossification centers; any defect in the ossification process will give rise to mendosal suture (accessory suture) and conditions like posterior plagiocephaly. There is a paucity of literature regarding the mendosal suture and further more, its report in Indian population is not known. The present study was conducted to find out the occurrence of mendosal suture in the Indian dry skulls. Fifteen specimens (3%) wer

The Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster syndrome. An analysis of its morphology and embryology. Part I: Morphology.

The histological appearance of the rudimentary uterus, endometrium, uterine tube, Gartner's duct, round ligament, vagina and ovary is described in ten case of the MRK syndrome. When the layout of the pelvic contents of patients with this syndrome is compared with that of a normal embryo of 20 mm CRL (stage 20), the following conclusions may be drawn. The MRK syndrome can be regarded as resulting from the cessation of development of the Müllerian duct, which in this condition extends only as far as its attachment to the caudal mesonephric ligament, the round ligament. The adjacent structures be
