The effect of congenital deafness on cerebral asymmetry in the perception of emotional and non-emotional faces.

Functional hemispheric specialization in recognizing faces expressing emotions was investigated in 18 normal hearing and 18 congenitally deaf children aged 13-14 years. Three kinds of faces were presented: happy, to express positive emotions, sad, to express negative emotions, and neutral. The subjects' task was to recognize the test face exposed for 20 msec in the left or right visual field. The subjects answered by pointing at the exposed stimulus on the response card that contained three different faces. The errors committed in expositions of faces in the left and right visual field were an…

"Opening an emotional dimension in me": changes in emotional reactivity and emotion regulation in a case of executive impairment after left fronto-parietal damage.

Dysexecutive impairment is a common problem after brain injury, particularly after damage to the lateral surface of the frontal lobes. There … nges were in the domain of emotional reactivity (increased experience of both positive and negative emotions) and emotion regulation (down-regulation of sadness). Professor F related both changes to difficulties in his thinking process, especially a difficulty generating and manipulating thoughts during moments of negative arousal. These results are discus …

Political emotions shape preferences for leaders' facial traits: anger favours dominance, fear favours trustworthiness.

Political emotions may shape not only which issues citizens prioritise, but also which social traits they value in leaders. Here we tested whether anger and fear elicited by real political issues differentially influence preferences for political leaders' facial traits. A balanced sample of U.S. Republicans and Democrats identified the political issue that made them most angry or most afraid and then chose which leader would best address that issue using computer-generated faces varying in dominance and trustworthiness. Participants chose a more dominant and less trustworthy-looking leader mor…

Effective connectivity in the active encoding of facial emotions: a dynamic causal modeling study.

Previous studies have identified brain regions involved in the active encoding of emotional content of facial expressions (ECFEs); however, little is known about how these regions interact within a functional network. Electroencephalography data were recorded from 62 healthy university students performing a delayed match-to-sample task in which facial expressions served as both encoding and interfering stimuli. Dynamic causal modeling was applied to examine encoding-related modulations of effective connectivity among six nodes in bilateral inferior occipital, inferior temporal, and inferior fr

Self-esteem and suppression of negative emotions among medical students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Suppression of negative emotions is one of the response-focused strategies within the broader field of emotion regulation. It refers to the inhibition or restriction of emotional expression, particularly in relation to anger, anxiety, and depressed mood. Among medical students, this issue may be especially relevant because professional socialization often promotes emotional restraint and functioning under psychological pressure. The aim of this study was to assess the association between self-esteem and suppression of negative emotions among medical students in Poland. S…

Current status and challenges of artificial intelligence application in managing Children's emotions and attention.

Machine learning (ML), a core component of artificial intelligence (AI), is increasingly being used to assess children's emotions and attention, with potential applications in developmental monitoring and early identification of neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This narrative review synthesizes studies published between 2012 and 2025 from PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science. We examine multimodal data sources (including facial, speech, physiological, eye movement, and behavioral features) and computati…

Using natural language processing to track negative emotions in the daily lives of adolescents.

Tracking emotion fluctuations in adolescents' daily lives is important for understanding mood dynamics and identifying early markers of affective disorders. This study examines whether natural language processing (NLP) methods, including large language models (LLMs), can approximate adolescents' concurrent self-reported negative affect from ecological momentary assessment narratives. We compared nomothetic (group-level) and idiographic (individualized) models as well as different NLP techniques for capturing within-person emotion fluctuations. Ecological momentary assessment text responses fro

Conduct disorder with limited prosocial emotions: a multimethod study in criminal justice-involved boys.

BACKGROUND: More than 10 years after its introduction in DSM-5, support for the 'limited prosocial emotions' specifier (LPE) for the diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD) remains scarce, possibly because studies failed to comprehensively assess the specifier and to include important characteristics. This study was designed to tackle both major limitations. METHODS: In a sample of 323 criminal justice-involved male adolescents (ages 16-17 years), diagnostic interviews were used to differentiate between males who meet criteria for both CD and the DSM-5 specifier (CD + LPE) and males who only meet …

The Cerebellar Role in Emotions at a Turning Point: Bibliometric Analysis and Collaboration Networks.

The neural basis of emotional experience, both in neurotypical and clinical conditions, remains an open research topic. Historically, the cerebellum was considered a purely motor structure; however, studies since the mid-twentieth century and contributions like the cerebellar cognitive-affective syndrome, evidenced its role in emotion. This has led to an expansion of the paradigm, encouraging further research into the cerebellar role in emotion. Understanding this field's development is essential to assessing its current state, identifying knowledge gaps, and exploring emerging areas. This pap

Left Insula and Right Middle Temporal Gyrus Dominate Cortical Network Discriminating Arousal-dependent Emotions.

Emotion processing is an integral part of everyone's life. The basic neural circuits involved in emotion perception are becoming clear, though the emotion's cognitive processing remains under investigation. Utilizing the stereo-electroencephalograph with high temporal-spatial resolution, this study aims to decipher the neural pathway responsible for discriminating low-arousal and high-arousal emotions. This study involves 19 patients with pharmacologically resistant epilepsy who participate in a delayed match/mismatch sample task designed to separately assess their ability to discriminate betw…

Indicators of maladaptive emotions in patients with cancer as assessed by oncologists and nurses.

PURPOSE: The clinical management of patients with cancer by oncologists and nurses needs to differentiate between maladaptive emotions that do require professional mental health care and adaptive emotions that do not require such care. Previous qualitative research identified six symptoms as potential indicators of maladaptive emotions. These included lingering, increasing or extreme emotions, emotions that interfere with daily life or with treatment, and unexplained somatic symptoms. The present study tested the validity of these symptoms as indicators of maladaptive emotions in patients with…

Human ovulatory phase-increasing odors cause positive emotions and stress-suppressive effects in males.

In many animals, olfactory cues are key for recognizing their sex, kinship, and reproductive status. In humans, it has been proposed that males find female body odors attractive during the ovulatory phase, coinciding with peak fertility. However, the molecular and physiological foundations of this attractiveness remain unclear. In this study, we combined sensory evaluation with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for chemical analysis and identified volatile compounds that fluctuate across menstrual cycle phases. We identified three ovulatory phase-increasing compounds that mitigate the basal

Mental health symptoms in Chinese children with sleep disorders and association with parental emotions.

Depression, anxiety, and stress are major mental health challenges during children's development. In China, heightened sleep disorders (SD), parental expectations, and academic stress highlight the importance of this issue. A total of 6,635 SD child-parent dyads were included in analysis. Sleep quality and psychological variables were assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Children with SD exhibited significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, stress and life dissatisfaction. We identified the

Musically evoked emotions in cochlear implant users and those with no known hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants provide the profoundly deaf excellent speech comprehension; however, perception and appreciation of music remains a challenge. Previous work suggests that cochlear implant users, compared to normal-hearing listeners, have diminished perception of certain musically evoked emotions due to deficits in hearing pitch-related musical elements. The purpose of this study was to investigate how well cochlear implants users use pitch-based information to identify the emotional intent of music. METHODS: Twenty-six cochlear implant users and 24 peers with no known hearing lo…

The risk of believing that emotions are bad and uncontrollable: association with orthorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore emotional functioning in individuals with varying levels of orthorexia nervosa (ON) symptoms. Given the established links between emotion dysregulation and other eating disorders (EDs), and the conceptualization of ON within the ED spectrum, this research sought to examine the relationships between ON symptomatology and emotion regulation strategies, alexithymia, and beliefs about emotions. METHODS: A large sample (N = 562) completed self-report measures with high psychometric properties, assessing ON traits (E-DOS), emotion regulation strategies (DERS-SF …

The role of the somatosensory system in the feeling of emotions: a neurostimulation study.

Emotional experiences deeply impact our bodily states, such as when we feel 'anger', our fists close and our face burns. Recent studies have shown that emotions can be mapped onto specific body areas, suggesting a possible role of the primary somatosensory system (S1) in emotion processing. To date, however, the causal role of S1 in emotion generation remains unclear. To address this question, we applied transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the S1 at different frequencies (beta, theta, and sham) while participants saw emotional stimuli with different degrees of pleasantness a…

Roles of negative emotions and personality traits in psoriasis vulgaris: A mendelian randomization study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Many studies have indicated that negative emotions and personality traits are related to psoriasis, though few have provided causal evidence. METHODS: Our analysis utilized 15 genome-wide association study datasets to identify instrumental variables associated with negative emotions, personality traits and psoriasis vulgaris. Two-sample Mendelian randomization was conducted to identify the causal associations of negative emotions and personality traits with psoriasis vulgaris. To mitigate bias from multiple tests, we adjusted p-values using the Benjamini-Hochberg method. RESULTS:…
