Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis vaccine (strain TC-83): a field study.

In 1971, more than 370 horses in south Texas were studied with respect to their clinical, virologic, and neutralizing antibody responses to vaccination with Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) strain TC-83. This study confirms reported findings that the vaccine used in the 1971 epizootic in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas was safe and efficacious. Vaccinal virus viremia titers were generally below the postulated infection threshold of epizootic vectors. In general, reactions to the vaccine were minimal and transient, with no observed abortions or deaths attributable to use of the va…

Western encephalomyelitis virus infection in "indicator" chickens in southern Alberta.

Sera from indicator chicken flocks situated in southern Alberta near Lethbridge were tested by the hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) technique for antibodies to Western, Eastern and St. Louis Encephalitis viruses during the summer and early fall of the four years 1964 to 1967.One chicken in 1964, 90 in 1965 and five each in 1966 and 1967 were positive to Western encephalomyelitis (WE) virus by hemagglutination-inhibition tests. All of the positive sera were confirmed by neutralization test (NT) in infant mice. No antibodies to the Eastern and St. Louis viruses were detected. Infection with WE v…

Treatment of acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis associated with recent rickettsial infection.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare, immune-mediated demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system that typically follows viral or bacterial infections. There are only two known case reports that describe an association with ADEM post rickettsial infection. A female in her 80s presented with progressive neurological decline, including dysarthria, dysphagia and hemiparesis, following recent treatment in Hong Kong for rickettsial infection. Initial CT brain imaging showed a right subcortical infarct. She deteriorated with encephalopathy and respiratory failure, requiring…

Fucoxanthin ameliorates experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis by inhibiting microglial NLRP3 inflammasome.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by focal inflammation, demyelination, axonal injury, and neuronal damage. Microglia-mediated neuroinflammation plays a critical role in its pathogenesis. Fucoxanthin (Fx), a compound abundant in various algae, exhibits antioxidant, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of Fx in ameliorating experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a well-established animal model of MS. Our results demonstrated that …

Autoantibodies-Abzymes with Phosphatase Activity in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis Mice.

The exact mechanisms of MS (multiple sclerosis) evolution are still unknown. However, the development of EAE (experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis simulating human MS) in C57BL/6 mice occurs due to the violation of bone marrow hematopoietic stem cell differentiation profiles, leading to the production of toxic for human autoantibody splitting MBP (myelin basic protein), MOG (mouse oligodendrocyte glycoprotein), five histones, DNA, and RNA. Here, we first analyzed the changes in the relative phosphatase activity of IgGs from C57BL/6 mice blood over time, corresponding to three stages of EA…

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome After SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic symptoms reported following an infection with SARS-CoV-2, such as cognitive problems, overlap with symptoms included in the definition of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of ME/CFS-like illness subsequent to acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, changes in ME/CFS symptoms through 12 months of follow-up, and the association of ME/CFS symptoms with SARS-CoV-2 test results at the acute infection-like index illness. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective, multisite, longitudinal cohort study (Innovative Supp…

Deep phenotyping of post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome.

Post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (PI-ME/CFS) is a disabling disorder, yet the clinical phenotype is poorly defined, the pathophysiology is unknown, and no disease-modifying treatments are available. We used rigorous criteria to recruit PI-ME/CFS participants with matched controls to conduct deep phenotyping. Among the many physical and cognitive complaints, one defining feature of PI-ME/CFS was an alteration of effort preference, rather than physical or central fatigue, due to dysfunction of integrative brain regions potentially associated with central catecho…

Bilateral Cerebellar Hemorrhages: An Atypical Presentation of Acute Hemorrhagic Encephalomyelitis.

Hurst disease, or Weston-Hurst syndrome, or acute hemorrhagic encephalomyelitis (AHEM), is an infrequent condition that usually gets provoked after a viral infection (respiratory tract infection) or, as reported in many case reports, post-vaccination. Hurst disease is a difficult-to-diagnose condition because it mimics common presentations such as stroke, decreased or loss of consciousness, brain abscess, and seizures, making clinical diagnosis challenging. Radiological imaging, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain with diffusion-weighted imaging, now serves as the primary mod…

Joint Flexibility and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome After Mononucleosis.

PURPOSE: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic disease characterized by substantial fatigue, postexertional malaise, unrefreshing sleep, and orthostatic intolerance, among other symptoms. Specific risk factors for the development of ME/CFS have not been adequately characterized. It has been suggested that ME/CFS is a connective tissue disorder and that joint hyperflexibility is a risk factor for the development of ME/CFS. METHODS: The goal of this study was to examine whether joint hyperflexibility is a risk factor for the development of ME/CFS after infecti…

An Autopsy Case of Elderly Onset Brainstem Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), which is a disease that causes multifocal inflammatory demyelination of the central nervous system, occurs predominantly in children and young adults. We report an autopsy case of an elderly man with brainstem ADEM that progressed over a period of about 3 months. An 82-year-old man developed disturbance of consciousness, dysphagia, and ataxic gait over a period of about 3 months. He was admitted to another hospital for aspiration pneumonia and recovered but was transferred to our hospital due to prolonged disturbance of consciousness. The patient wa…

Myelin-specific T cells in animals with Japanese macaque encephalomyelitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether animals with Japanese macaque encephalomyelitis (JME), a spontaneous demyelinating disease similar to multiple sclerosis (MS), harbor myelin-specific T cells in their central nervous system (CNS) and periphery. METHODS: Mononuclear cells (MNCs) from CNS lesions, cervical lymph nodes (LNs) and peripheral blood of Japanese macaques (JMs) with JME, and cervical LN and blood MNCs from healthy controls or animals with non-JME conditions were analyzed for the presence of myelin-specific T cells and changes in interleukin 17 (IL-17) and interferon gamma (IFNγ) express…

Association between acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and thyroid autoimmunity in children.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels are observed in various autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between TPOAb and pediatric acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (PADEM) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the positive rate of TPOAb and thyroid dysfunction in children with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and assess the relationship between TPOAb and clinical features of PADEM. METHODS: This retrospective single-center case-control study was conducted from April 2017 to April 2019. We enrolled 23 children with ADEM and 23 age- and …

Congenital Toxoplasmosis Presenting as Eosinophilic Encephalomyelitis With Spinal Cord Hemorrhage.

A 4-week-old male neonate with a history of intermittent hypothermia in the newborn nursery presented with an acute onset of bilateral lower extremity paralysis and areflexia. Extensive workup demonstrated eosinophilic encephalomyelitis and multifocal hemorrhages of the brain and spinal cord. Funduscopic examination revealed bilateral chorioretinitis with macular scarring. The laboratory values were notable for peripheral eosinophilia and cerebrospinal fluid eosinophilic pleocytosis (28 white blood cells/µL, 28% eosinophils), markedly elevated protein (1214 mg/dL), and hypoglycorrhachia (20 mg…
