The avian pineal organ represents a transitional type between a photosensory organ of lower vertebrates and the endocrine gland of mammals and shows remarkable changes in its innervation and structure during ontogeny. In the avian pineal organ the progressive reduction of the pinealofugal component and the spectacular increase in pinealopetal sympathetic innervation occur in parallel. In domestic fowl the number of intrapineal AChE-positive (afferent) neurons decreases rapidly during ontogenetic development, whereas the sympathetic innervation becomes more prominent. Furthermore, the end vesic

Amino acids are important components for peptides and proteins and act as signal transmitters. Only L-amino acids have been considered necessary in mammals, including humans. However, diverse D-amino acids, such as D-serine, D-aspartate, D-alanine, and D-cysteine, are found in mammals. Physiological roles of these D-amino acids not only in the nervous system but also in the endocrine system are being gradually revealed. N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are associated with learning and memory. D-Serine, D-aspartate, and D-alanine can all bind to NMDA receptors. H2S generated from D-cystein

Disorders of the thyroid gland, the parathyroids and adrenals may cause muscle dysfunction. The following features seem to be typical for most of these endocrine myopathies: 1. Usually proximal limb muscles, i.e. pelvic and/or shoulder girdle musculatur, are involved. - 2. Even in cases with severe clinical symptoms morphological abnormalities of the muscles are relatively mild, suggesting that these disorders are mainly functional ones. - 3. The myopathies usually resolve completely with effective treatment of the underlying endocrine disorder. - The pathogenetic mechanisms involved largely r

D-Aspartate, D-serine and D-alanine are a regular occurrence in mammalian endocrine tissues, though in amounts varying with the type of gland. The pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid, adrenal glands and testis contain relatively large amounts of D-aspartate in all species examined. D-alanine is relatively abundant in the pituitary gland and pancreas. High levels of D-serine characterize the hypothalamus. D-leucine, D-proline and D-glutamate are generally low. The current knowledge of physiological roles of D-amino acids in endocrine tissues is far from exhaustive, yet the topic is attractin

Ultrasound examination has become essential to evaluate morphology and size of several endocrine glands and detect the presence of lesions within these organs. Nevertheless, with the recent advances of ultrasound technology, we have opportunity to correlate the echostructure of thyroid, ovary, testis, parathyroids, etc. to their function. Thus, the ultrasound systems are in-office essential instruments for many clinical specialists. Herein we presented the most updated information about the use of ultrasound in specific endocrine-related issues, such as thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal gland, and…

The MEN II b syndrome is a form of multiple endocrine neoplasie (MEN). The main features are medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, pheochromocytoma, adenoma of the parathyroid glands and a marfanoid appearance. The authors report a case of MEN II b with a characteristic combination of ocular findings: thickened upper eyelids, ectopia puncti lacrimalis, decreased secretion of the lacrimal gland, medullary corneal nerves and a ring of neuromatous tissue at the limbus corneae. The differential diagnosis and the possibility of early diagnosis and management of this endocrine neoplasia are discussed

Hormone systems, which control diverse physiological functions, have been extensively studied, yet consistent rules underlying these systems remain elusive. Here we identify unifying design principles in human endocrine systems. Available data was found for 43 of 63 systems, and all 43 fall into five classes of circuits. Each class uses distinct regulation circuitry to perform specific dynamical functions: homeostasis, acute input-output response, or adjustable set points. The circuits involve interactions across multiple timescales - minutes to hours for hormone secretion, ultradian and diurn

According to the current view, the main function of the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin is to convey information on environmental photoperiods to the endocrine, central nervous and immune systems, allowing their optimal adjustment to the time of the day and season. Within the endocrine system, the gonads are a major target; maturation of the female reproductive organs during pubertal development is inhibited by the pineal hormone. During the reproductive phase, melatonin seems to act as a coordinating signal for the menstrual cycle by timing the LH-peak and supporting progesterone produ

Tumours deriving from the endocrine cell system can be organized into two main categories namely: endocrine and neuroendocrine tumours. The endocrine group contains all tumours developing from the follicular cells of the thyroid gland (papillary, follicular and undifferentiated carcinomas) and from the suprarenal cortex (adenomas and adenocarcinomas). Such tumours are as a rule identified and evaluated by routine histological staining and special histochemical techniques are usually not applied. The neuroendocrine tumour group is characterized by its content of intracytoplasmic hormonal secret

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1) is an autosomal dominant syndrome consisting of endocrine tumors of the parathyroid gland, pituitary gland, and pancreas. MEN-1 is caused by loss of function mutations in the MEN1 gene, which encodes the tumor suppressor protein menin. Cutaneous collagenomas and facial angiofibromas also have been associated with MEN-1 and may serve as diagnostic clues to the diagnosis. We present a case of amelanotic melanoma resembling a large angiofibroma in a young man with MEN-1.

In relation to locuses of the 10th chromosome at present the following are in the focus of interest: tumours of endocrine glands, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid gland (MTC) and multiple endocrine neoplasias (MEN). It seems that the unifying basis is the oncogene RET, responsible for the development of Hirschsprung's disease HSCR. The authors mentions also metabolically important locuses for choline acetyltransferase (CHAT), uriporphyrinogen synthase (UROS) and methyl guanine methyltransferase (MGMT). A special paragraph is devoted to a list of collagenous genes COL1-COL18 and diseases asso…

A severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has rapidly spread around the world since was first scientifically described in December 2019. At present approximately 400 million people have suffered from the disease, almost 6 million people have died.SARS-CoV-2 uses the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and the serine protease TMPRSS2 for S protein priming. ACE2 and TMPRSS2 are expressed in several endocrine glands, including the pituitary, pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, and testes. Thus, the endocrine glands may be a direct target for SARS-CoV-2. The main risk factors for s…

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare autosomal dominant hereditary disorder in which patients develop multiple endocrine tumors simultaneously. Among these, primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common and often the earliest manifestation. All patients with MEN1 and hypercalcemia should have surgery, with most patients requiring surgical treatment before the age of 50 years. The timing of parathyroid surgery mainly depends on hypercalcemia and the presence of renal or skeletal complications. The goals of treatment are to correct hypercalcemia, prevent target organ damage, and
