Dens invaginatus of a maxillary lateral incisor: endodontic treatment.

A right maxillary central incisor and an adjacent lateral incisor with a dens invaginatus were identified as requiring endodontic treatment. Both teeth were treated by nonsurgical means. Thirteen months postoperatively the central incisor showed evidence of periapical resolution, whereas the lateral incisor did not. The lateral incisor was then treated with apical curettage, an apicoectomy, and retrograde amalgam filling. One year after the surgical procedure the periapical tissues of both the lateral and central incisors exhibited satisfactory resolution. This case demonstrates that certain c

Treatment of endodontically and periodontally involved teeth. A case report.

Treatment of endodontically and periodontally involved teeth requires accurate diagnosis to determine the primary cause. The case presented involves a deep periodontal pocket associated with a necrotic tooth. The cause was diagnosed as being primarily endodontic and regeneration of the attachment apparatus occurred after endodontic therapy.

An in vitro model for testing biocompatibility of endodontic materials to bone.

Calvaria from 6-day old mice labelled 4 days previously with 45CaCl2 were divided into test and control halves and each half cultured separately in vitro. Eluents from four endodontic materials, endomethasone, zinc oxide/eugenol, AH26 and gutta-percha were added separately to the culture medium of each test half. After 24 and 48 h culturing periods, the 45CaCl2 in the media and calvaria was measured by a standard liquid scintillation counting technique and a resorption ratio between test and control halves was computed. This ratio, based on cell mediated resorption, was an indication of toxici

Hard-tissue resorption and deposition after endodontic instrumentation.

Hard-tissue resorption and deposition following endodontic instrumentation were studied histologically in forty-one monkey teeth after 2, 7, and 42 days. No medicaments and no root canal filling materials were used. The number and length of lacunae and areas of resorption of the root canal wall, the root surface, and the lamina dura were counted and measured. Resorption, stimulated by instrumentation, was observed after 7 days at all sites. Resorption was slight at the root canal wall and at the root surface and was significantly more severe than normal osteoclastic replacement in the adjacent

Applications of artificial intelligence in endodontic education: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The growing bases of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications ranging from diagnostic support to immersive training have rapidly advanced in the dental education field. Endodontics, by its very nature of relying so highly on a proper diagnosis and careful technical execution, is an indication through which AI may be best poised to succeed the most in specialty care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the role of artificial intelligence (AI): machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) and large language models (LLMs) relate…

Uncovering Antibiotic Resistance Signatures in Endodontic Enterococcus faecalis.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Due to its resilience and resistance to common intracanal disinfectants and medicines, Enterococcus faecalis, also known as E. faecalis, is a notorious pathogen in endodontics that is frequently isolated from persistent and secondary root canal infections. Its growing resistance to antibiotics that target the cell wall is concerning, and its clinical impact on endodontic failure is widely acknowledged. Yet, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding of the global transcriptional responses that E. faecalis employs to survive exposure to widely used β-lactams and gl…

Regenerative endodontic procedure using Emdogain: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Emdogain (Straumann® Emdogain®, Basel, Switzerland) is an enamel matrix derivative and has an important role in odontogenesis, by potentializing pulp tissue repair and regeneration, as showed in biological studies. Nevertheless, the benefits of using Emdogain as a scaffold in clinical regenerative endodontic procedures has not been demonstrated and is not yet fully understood. The aim of this report was to show three clinical cases that had different preoperative conditions and underwent pulp regenerative procedures under an identical clinical protocol. This report also aimed to sh

Bioactive peptides in Endodontic infections: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

In general, endodontic infections are polymicrobial infections, and the severity of the infection depends on the pathogenicity of the microbes and the resistance of the host. For the treatment of endodontic infections, antibiotics are widely used; however, the development of resistance raises concerns for their wide-scale application; hence, there is always an unmet need to develop alternative treatment strategies in the fight against endodontic infection. Basically, the searches were conducted in PubMed (459), Science Direct (559 articles), and WOS (493) using keywords and phrases to identify

Exosomes as Promising Therapeutic Tools for Regenerative Endodontic Therapy.

Pulpitis is a common and frequent disease in dental clinics. Although vital pulp therapy and root canal treatment can stop the progression o … s, and neurogenesis, we aim to reveal the roles and mechanisms of exosomes involved in regenerative endodontics. Lastly, immense efforts are made to illustrate the clinical strategies and influencing factors of exosomes applied in dental pulp regeneration, such as types of parental cells, culture conditions of parent cells, exosome concentrations, and scaffol …

Systemic Factors Affecting Prognosis and Outcome of Endodontic Therapy.

The successful outcome of endodontic treatment is dependent on the immune response and the reparative potential of the individual. Alteration in the host immune response is a common characteristic shared by both apical periodontitis and systemic diseases. Although infection-induced periapical lesions occur in a localized environment, numerous epidemiologic studies in the last few decades have investigated the potential association between endodontic disease pathogenesis and systemic diseases. The goal of this review is to identify common systematic factors and discuss the effect they may or ma

Progress and perspectives on cell-free regenerative endodontic therapy.

Although teeth with pulpitis/apical periodontitis are saved after successful endodontic therapy, they are devitalized and susceptible to reinfections and fractures. The development of biology-based approaches for dental pulp regeneration or repair is possible today because of recent advances in tissue engineering and biomaterials. Cell-free regenerative endodontic therapy offers a promising strategy for the treatment of necrotic immature permanent teeth in children and adolescents. However, studies are underway to determine whether this procedure can be applied to mature teeth.

Innate immune sensing of nucleic acid in endodontic infection.

Innate immunity is the first line of defence and fights against microorganisms. Nucleic acids are important pathogen-associated molecular patterns to be recognized in innate immunity. There are three types of nucleic acid sensors, including endosomal sensors (NA-sensing TLRs), cytosolic DNA sensors (cGAS and AIM2) and cytosolic RNA sensors (RLG-I, MDA5 and LGP2). Recent studies have shown that nucleic acid sensors are expressed differently in a variety of dental pulp cells and mediate inflammation through complex pathways. Nucleic acid sensing may play a vital role in the development of endodo
