Energy Cost of Lower Body Dressing, Pop-Over Transfers, and Manual Wheelchair Propulsion in People with Paraplegia Due to Motor-Complete Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Energy required for able-bodied individuals to perform common activities is well documented, whereas energy associated with daily activities among people with spinal cord injury (SCI) is less understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine energy expended during several basic physical tasks specific to individuals with paraplegia due to motor-complete SCI. METHODS: Sixteen adults with motor-complete SCI below T2 level and duration of paraplegia greater than 3 months were included. Oxygen consumption (VO2), caloric expenditure, and heart rate were measured at rest and while participants perfo

A new nanobiosensor for glucose with high sensitivity and selectivity in serum based on fluorescence resonance Energy transfer (FRET) between CdTe quantum dots and Au nanoparticles.

A novel assembled nanobiosensor QDs-ConA-beta-CDs-AuNPs was designed for the direct determination of glucose in serum with high sensitivity and selectivity. The sensing approach is based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between CdTe quantum dots (QDs) as an energy donor and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as an energy acceptor. The specific combination of concanavalin A (ConA)-conjugated QDs and thiolated beta-cyclodextrins (beta-SH-CDs)-modified AuNPs assembles a hyperefficient FRET nanobiosensor. In the presence of glucose, the AuNPs-beta-CDs segment of the nanobiosensor is displa

Hypothesis for lateral ventricular dilatation in communicating hydrocephalus: new understanding of the Monro-Kellie hypothesis in the aspect of cardiac energy transfer through arterial blood flow.

Many theories have been postulated to date regarding mechanisms involved in non-enlargement of the subarachnoid space and enlargement of the ventricles in patients with communicating hydrocephalus, but none have been prove to be definite. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) movement is known not to bulk flow but rather pulsatile flow that develops from the energy of the blood flow ejected from the heart, in an isolated system of the intracranial cavity surrounded by a solid skull, as in the Monro-Kellie hypothesis. The authors attempt to explain the mechanisms involved in selective enlargement of the la

A self-powered photoelectrochemical biosensor for H2O2, and xanthine oxidase activity based on enhanced chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer through slow light effect in inverse opal TiO2.

TiO2 inverse opal photonic crystals (IOPCs) were fabricated by using polystyrene template. TiO2 IOPCs based photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was fabricated for the precise and stable detection of Heme without external irradiation. Then, the sensitization of TiO2 IOPCs was fulfilled with CdS quantum dots (QDs) by SILAR method to form ITO-TiO2 IOPCs-CdS:Mn electrode, which in turn was used to construct a PEC biosensor. The uniform porous structure of IOPCs with a large surface area is conducive to the excellent electronic transmission and QDs deposition. Also, the energy level matching betwe

Highly-sensitive aptasensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer between l-cysteine capped ZnS quantum dots and graphene oxide sheets for the determination of edifenphos fungicide.

With the advantages of excellent optical properties and biocompatibility, single-strand DNA-functionalized quantum dots have been widely applied in biosensing and bioimaging. A new aptasensor with easy operation, high sensitivity, and high selectivity was developed by immobilizing the aptamer on water soluble l-cysteine capped ZnS quantum dots (QDs). Graphene oxide (GO) sheets are mixed with the aptamer-QDs. Consequently, the aptamer-conjugated QDs bind to the GO sheets to form a GO/aptamer-QDs ensemble. This aptasensor enables the energy transfer based on a fluorescence resonance energy trans

Energy transfer in thermal and hyperthermal collisions between CN(X2Sigma+, v = 2) in selected rotational levels (Ni = 0, 1, 6, 10, 15 and 20) and N2.

We report rate coefficients (k(tot,N(i))) for total removal of CN(X(2)Sigma(+), v = 2, N(i)) radicals from selected rotational levels (N(i) = 0, 1, 6, 10, 15 and 20) and for state-to-state rotational energy transfer (k(i-->f)) between levels N(i) and other rotational levels N(f) in single collisions with N(2). CN radicals have been generated using two sources: (a) the pulsed laser photolysis of ICN at 266 nm, which generates translationally 'hot' CN radicals; and (b) the pulsed laser photolysis of NCNO at 570 nm, which generates CN radicals with translational energies close to the average valu

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer on the voltage-dependent sodium channel. Spatial relationship and site coupling between the batrachotoxin and Leiurus quinquestriatus quinquestriatus alpha-scorpion toxin receptors.

A fluorescent N- methylanthraniloyl derivative of the potent depolarizing agent batrachotoxin has been used to probe the structural and conformational properties of the neurotoxin receptor site on the voltage-dependent sodium channel. Batrachotoxin A 20-alpha-N- methylanthranilate (BTX-NMA) retains high affinity for its receptor site on the synaptosomal sodium channel with a Kd between 78 and 91 nM and an average site capacity of 2 pmol/mg of synaptosomal protein in the presence of Leiurus quinquestriatus quinquestriatus alpha-scorpion toxin. The fluorescence emission of BTX-NMA upon binding t

A signal-on fluorescent probe integrating Au@Ag NPs-based fluorescence resonance energy transfer quenching and enzyme-free catalytic hairpin assembly for c arcinoembryonic antigen detection.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a pivotal broad-spectrum tumor marker, yet its accurate quantification in early-stage cancer remains challenging due to the limited sensitivity and operational complexity of conventional immunoassays. We report a signal-on fluorescent probe that synergistically integrates the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) quenching capability of Au@Ag NPs with enzyme-free catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) amplification for ultrasensitive detection of CEA. In this design, a Cy3-labeled hairpin DNA (H1) is anchored onto Au@Ag NPs to construct Au@Ag-H1 NPs, where t

Mechanistic Insights into Ultrafast Excitation Energy Transfer in Hybrid Light-Harvesting System of BODIPY Derivatives and LH2 from Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1 Co-assembled in Lipid Bilayers.

To further explore the intrinsic mechanism of excitation energy transfer (EET) in a hybrid light-harvesting system composed of a natural antenna complex and fluorophores, the peripheral light-harvesting complex LH2 from Rhodobacter (Rba.) sphaeroides and a bistyryl-BODIPY derivative (B6) were co-assembled into phospholipid bilayers, followed by experimental and theoretical investigations. The singlet EET efficiency from B6 to B850 BChls of LH2 was determined by fluorescence excitation profile, exceeding 60%. The ultrafast dynamics study reveals that EET from optimally aligned B6 monomers to B8

Highly chemiluminescent TiO2/tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin/N-(4-aminobutyl)-N-ethylisoluminol nanoluminophores for detection of heart disease biomarker copeptin based on chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer.

In this work, the chemiluminescence (CL) property of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrin- and N-(4-aminobutyl)-N-ethylisoluminol-functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-TCPP-ABEI nanoluminophores) was studied for the first time. It was found that TiO2-TCPP-ABEI nanoluminophores exhibited excellent CL activity in the presence of H2O2. The CL mechanism has been proposed due to the reaction of ABEI with H2O2 and catalytic effect of TiO2 and TCPP. Furthermore, trisodium citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles were observed to effectively quench the CL of TiO2-TCPP-ABEI due to CL resonance

Development and validation of a quantitative real-time PCR assay using fluorescence resonance energy transfer technology for detection of Aspergillus fumigatus in experimental invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is a frequently fatal infection in immunocompromised patients that is difficult to diagnose. Present methods for detection of Aspergillus spp. in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and in tissue vary in sensitivity and specificity. We therefore developed an A. fumigatus-specific quantitative real-time PCR-based assay utilizing fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) technology. We compared the assay to quantitative culture of BAL fluid and lung tissue in a rabbit model of experimental IPA. Using an enzymatic and high-speed mechanical cell wall disrup

Quantum dot-protein interface: Interaction of the CdS quantum dot with human hemoglobin for the study of the energy transfer process and binding mechanism along with detection of the unfolding of hemoglobin.

In this study, the interaction of the human hemoglobin with cost effective and chemically fabricated CdS quantum dots (QDs) (average sizes ≈3nm) has been investigated. The semiconductor QDs showed maximum visible absorption at 445 nm with excitonic formation and band gap of ≈ 2.88 eV along with hexagonal crystalline phase. The binding of QDs-Hb occurs through corona formation to the ground sate complex formation. The life time of the heme pocket binding and reorganization were found to be t1 = 43 min and t2 = 642 min, respectively. The emission quenching of the Hb has been indicated large ener

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer from tryptophan to a chromium(III) complex accompanied by non-specific cleavage of albumin: a step forward towards the development of a novel photoprotease.

A chromium(III) complex, transdiaqua [N, N'-propylenebis(salicylideneimino)chromium(III)]perchlorate ([Cr(salprn)(H2O)(2)]ClO(4)) in the presence of sodium azide and upon photoexcitation was found to bring about non-selective cleavage of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) evidence has been obtained for the formation of a Cr(V) species upon photolysis of a solution containing the chromium(III) complex and sodium azide. This Cr(V) species non-selectively cleaves BSA. The fluorescence excitation spectrum of BSA-[Cr(salprn)(H2O)(2)]+ adduct showed a band at lambda(ma

Competition between electron transfer and reactive capture in ion-molecule reactions at low collision energies: isotopic and stereodynamic effects in the reactions of CH3F with H2+, HD+ and D2.

The bimolecular reactions between CH3F and H2+, HD+ and D2+ have been studied in the range of collision energies between ∼0 and kB × 30 K using a merged-beam approach. The ion-molecule reactions were investigated following photoexciting of H2 (HD, D2) to high Rydberg states in a supersonic beam, merging the Rydberg-molecule beam with a cold supersonic beam of CH3F using a surface-electrode Rydberg-Stark deflector and monitoring the CH3+, CH2F+ and CH3F+ ions generated by the reactions of H2+ (HD+, D2+) with CH3F within the distant orbit of the Rydberg electron. In all three reaction systems, a

An efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer system from quantum dots to graphene oxide nano sheets: Application in a photoluminescence aptasensing probe for the sensitive detection of diazinon.

In this paper a new aptasensor with high-sensitivity, and high-specificity for detection of diazinon, was discovered, based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between quantum dot (QD) as a donor and graphene oxide (GO) as an acceptor. l-cysteine capped CdS QDs/DF20 aptamer bioconjugates were successfully synthesized. GO was also attached to aptamers and photoluminescence quenching was obtained through FRET. By adding target diazinon to the bioconjugates containing GO, photoluminescence recovery was detected due to detachment of GO from the aptamer as a result of the difference in
