This overview focusses on the ubiquitous presence of immunohistochemically visible peptidergic nerves with vasodilatory function. Previous immunochemical investigations have demonstrated various opioid peptides in the pancreas. However, controversies exist related to the cellular localization of these peptides in the endocrine pancreas. Developmental patterns for rat pancreatic opioid peptides and islet hormones were studied from gestational day 20 through adulthood. Fetal tissue was obtained as well as pancreas at birth (day 0), and postnatal days 3, 7, 14, and 21, and 7 weeks. The hormones measured included insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin. The distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like structures in the olfactory bulb of the rainbow trout was studied using an indirect-immunoperoxidase technique. Olfactory fibres were very strongly labelled, whereas the fibres or cell bodies in the remaining strata of the olfactory bulb showed no immunoreactivity. In addition, the olfactory nerve fibres were not immunoreactive for methionine- and leucine-enkephalins, motilin, neuropeptide Y, substance P, cholecystokinin-8 and tyrosine-hydroxylase.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) regulates blood pressure by cleaving angiotensin I to produce angiotensin II. An agonist of mu-opiate receptors, D-Ala2-Gly-ol5-enkephalin (DAGO, 0.5 mcg), administered intrathecally, was found to inhibit behavioral and hemodynamic reactions induced by thermal and electrical stimulation of conscious male rats. Adrenocorticotrophin, lipotrophin and the related peptides alpha-MSH, CLIP, beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin have been measured, and characterized chromatographically in tumour extracts from seven patients with the ectopic ACTH syndrome. Four of the seven tumours contained the complete family of peptides, although the proportion of one to another varied between tumours. In addition, large molecule weight forms of ACTH and met-enkephalin were seen. The potential clinical importance of these observations is discussed.
