Estimating the basic reproduction number for single-strain dengue fever epidemics.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, an infectious tropical disease, has recently emerged as one of the most important mosquito-borne viral diseases in the world. We perform a retrospective analysis of the 2011 dengue fever epidemic in Pakistan in order to assess the transmissibility of the disease. We obtain estimates of the basic reproduction number R 0 from epidemic data using different methodologies applied to different epidemic models in order to evaluate the robustness of our estimate. RESULTS: We first estimate model parameters by fitting a deterministic ODE vector-host model for the transmission dynam

Climatic drivers of seasonal influenza epidemics in French Guiana, 2006-2010.

OBJECTIVES: Influenza seasonality remains poorly studied in Equatorial regions. Here we assessed the seasonal characteristics and environmental drivers of influenza epidemics in French Guiana, where influenza surveillance was established in 2006. METHODS: Sentinel GPs monitored weekly incidence of Influenza-like illnesses (ILI) from January 2006 through December 2010 and collected nasopharyngeal specimens from patients for virological confirmation. Times series analysis was used to investigate relationship between ILI and climatic parameters (rainfall and specific humidity). RESULTS: Based o…

'Formidable contagion': epidemics, work and recruitment in Colonial Amazonia (1660-1750).

The text analyzes the extent to which smallpox and measles epidemics provoked transformations in the ways in which workforces were acquired and used in colonial Amazonia from the mid-seventeenth to mid-eighteenth century, with an increase in slave raids on the indigenous population and the attempt to organize a trade route in African slaves to the region. It also explores how indigenous mortality rates at the end of the seventeenth century led to a concern with the region's defence and prompted the recruitment of soldiers from the Madeira islands.

Simulation models examining the effect of Brugian filariasis on dengue epidemics.

Concurrent ingestion of microfilariae (mf) and arboviruses by mosquitoes can enhance the transmission of virus compared with when virus is i … , mf-induced acceleration of the EIP would generate more frequent (but not necessarily more severe) epidemics. Potential interactions between arboviruses and hematozoans deserve closer scrutiny.

Cofactor infections and HIV epidemics in developing countries: implications for treatment.

This article shows that the burden of certain tropical disease infections, after controlling for other factors, is positively correlated with HIV prevalence. Using cross-national data and multivariate linear regression analysis, we investigate the determinants of HIV prevalence in low- and middle-income countries. We begin with social and economic variables used in other cross-national studies and then incorporate data on parasitic and infectious diseases endemic in poor populations, which are found to be strongly and significantly correlated with--and are potent predictors of--HIV prevalence.

HIV diagnoses in Australia: diverging epidemics within a low-prevalence country.

OBJECTIVE: To describe recent trends in the diagnosis of HIV infection in Australia. DESIGN AND SETTING: Analysis of national surveillance system data for 1993-2006. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Number and population rate of new HIV diagnoses by year, exposure route and demographic characteristics. RESULTS: Between 1993 and 2006, 12 313 new diagnoses of HIV infection were reported in Australia. From 1993 to 1999, the annual number of diagnoses declined by 32% from 1056 to 718, and then increased by 31% from 763 in 2000 to 998 in 2006. Between 2000 and 2006, diagnosis rates significantly increased

Host immunity and synchronized epidemics of syphilis across the United States.

A central question in population ecology is the role of 'exogenous' environmental factors versus density-dependent 'endogenous' biological factors in driving changes in population numbers. This question is also central to infectious disease epidemiology, where changes in disease incidence due to behavioural or environmental change must be distinguished from the nonlinear dynamics of the parasite population. Repeated epidemics of primary and secondary syphilis infection in the United States over the past 50 yr have previously been attributed to social and behavioural changes. Here, we show that…

HIV epidemics in Africa: what explains the variations in HIV prevalence?

There are large differences in the prevalence of HIV infection between different regions in sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from less than 10% in pregnant women in most of West Africa, to over 25% in pregnant women in large cities in Eastern and Southern Africa. These differences in HIV prevalence are in many instances due to differences in rate of spread of the virus. The multicenter study on factors determining the differential spread of HIV in four African cities tried to identify factors that could explain differences in spread of HIV between different regions in sub-Saharan Africa. The study

Epidemics of vascular toxicity and pulmonary hypertension: what can be learned?

Epidemics of vascular disease caused by toxins and infectious agents affecting both humans and animals have been common in history. Examples of agents implicated include anorexients, ergotamine, mercury, arsenic, vinyl chloride, thorotrast, plant alkaloids, nitrites, toxic oil, tryptophan and bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. A major characteristic of these disorders is endothelial dysfunction, which may manifest itself in vasospastic disorders, sclerodermiform skin lesions, fibrosis, osteolytic lesions, polyneuropathy and portal and pulmonary hypertension. Angiosarcoma may also be a …

Modelling the dynamics of scarlet fever epidemics in the 19th century.

Annual deaths from scarlet fever in Liverpool, UK during 1848-1900 have been used as a model system for studying the historical dynamics of the epidemics. Mathematical models are developed which include the growth of the population and the death rate from scarlet fever. Time-series analysis of the results shows that there were two distinct phases to the disease (i) 1848-1880: regular epidemics (wavelength = 3.7 years) consistent with the system being driven by an oscillation in the transmission coefficient (deltabeta) at its resonant frequency, probably associated with dry conditions in winter…

Mannan-binding lectin in the sub-Saharan HIV and tuberculosis epidemics.

Inherited deficiency of mannan-binding lectin (MBL) has been shown to predispose to infections. Conversely, it has also been suggested that MBL might facilitate the uptake of certain intracellular microbes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether MBL plays a role in the HIV and tuberculosis epidemics in Africa. Thus, the authors determined the MBL serum concentration in 173 HIV infected patients (150 with concomitant tuberculosis), 94 patients with tuberculosis without being HIV infected, and 113 controls from Tanzania. The frequency of MBL deficiency was significantly increased in HI…

[The current epidemics of nosocomial infection in the field of surgery].

We studied retrospectively the hospital acquired MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in patients of surgery field. The causative bacteria of nosocomial infections were mainly MRSA and P. aeruginosa. MRSA was mainly cross-infected via the route of medical staffs' hands. P. aeruginosa was mainly infected through indirect contact by wet hospital environment. Therefore, MRSA nosocomial infections can be prevented by washing and disinfecting hand, and disinfecting the dry regions of hospital environment around patients with MRSA infection. P. aeruginosa nosocomial infections can be prevented

Yellow fever epidemics and mortality in the United States, 1693-1905.

Yellow fever epidemics struck the United States repeatedly in the 18th and 19th centuries. The disease was not indigenous; epidemics were imported by ship from the Caribbean. Prior to 1822, yellow fever attacked cities as far north as Boston, but after 1822 it was restricted to the south. Port cities were the primary targets, but the disease occasionally spread up the Mississippi River system in the 1800s. New Orleans, Mobile, Savannah, and Charleston were major targets; Memphis suffered terribly in 1878. Yellow fever epidemics caused terror, economic disruption, and some 100,000-150,000 death…

Two concurrent epidemics of enteroviral meningitis in an obstetric neonatal unit.

A small epidemic of viral infection occurred in a neonatal unit. It involved 11 infants, all of whom recovered. Echovirus 11 was the cause of illness in six infants, coxsackie B3 in four, and one infant had a biphasic illness, due first to echo 11, then to coxsackie B3. The epidemic coincided with a major outbreak of echovirus 11 and a smaller outbreak of coxsackie B3 in the community. Several staff became ill. Five infants were considered to have been infected by perinatal materno-infant spread, others by cross-infection. The epidemic ended when the nursery was closed.
