Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were obtained in 20 patients with palatal myoclonus. The group included 14 men and six women whose ages ranged from 19 to 82 years. Six of the patients had abnormal BAEPs: two with severe head trauma and one each with a brainstem infarct, tumor, demyelination, and an indeterminate inflammatory process. The 14 patients with normal BAEPs had palatal myoclonus secondary to head trauma (five patients), brainstem infarcts (four patients), cerebellar tumors (two patients), degenerative processes (two patients), and an Arnold-Chiari malformation (one patie…

Transient visually evoked potentials (VEPs) to sinusoidal gratings over a range of spatial frequencies have been recorded in cases of optic neuritis. The use of the response to pattern onset in addition to the response to pattern reversal extended the range to higher spatial frequencies by up to two octaves. There was an increase in VEP delay and a greater degree of discrimination from a control group at higher spatial frequencies. This finding is discussed in the light of previous reports of luminance and checkerboard VEPs in demyelinating optic nerve disease. An attempt is made to relate amp…

The authors report their investigation of the effects of high-dose barbiturates on the multimodality evoked response in 9 cats. After baseline evoked responses were obtained, boluses of pentobarbital were infused intravenously at regular intervals, amounting to cumulative total doses of 9, 18, 27, 45, 63, 123, and 183 mg/kg at respective infusions. This resulted in gradually increasing serum pentobarbital levels, reaching therapeutic coma levels (4 to 5 mg/dl) after the fifth infusion. At this point, the electroencephalogram was flat, and pressor agents were required to maintain cardiovascular

This study was undertaken to identify the normal somatosensory evoked potential pattern from stimulation of the common peroneal nerve in order to provide basic data for clinical use in diagnosis and management of patients with spinal cord lesions. Thirty-four adult volunteers, free of neurological disease, and 12 patients were tested. The recording technique is described and is similar to that reported by Perot. The primary evoked response (P1) was easily visualized in 88% of the recordings from normal subjects. The peak latency of the primary response was 38.9 msec, and the deflection was pos

A short survey is presented of what can be done with electrophysiological techniques in ophthalmological diagnosis. It is stressed that more investigation has to be done to elucidate the discrepancies between electrophysiological and psychophysical disturbances. These discrepancies can be used for the differential diagnosis. More, though still too little, is known about differences between a disturbance of latency time and that of amplitude. It seems that latencies are more disturbed in active pathological processes like demyelination, compression of nerve fibres and oedema, whereas isolated r

A study of the functional activity of ascending projectional systems in 90 patients with medium progressive(paranoid) schizophrenia demonstrated a correlation between the parameters of evoked potentials and the clinical signs of the disease. During the early paranoidal stage of the pathological process, there was a certain activity of the nonspecific brain areas. As the disease progresses from paranoid states to signs of "secondary"catatonia, there ensues the blockade of the information conduction through nonspecific areas along with a progressive increase in the activity of specific afferent …

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were used to study two forms of hereditary spastic paraplegia. We recorded the VEP in 6 homozygotes and 5 obligate heterozygotes in one family with recessively transmitted disease and in 5 persons with dominantly transmitted hereditary spastic paraplegia. The VEPs in the affected persons from both families were similar; both had delayed conduction times and changes in the wave form. The VEPs of the obligate heterozygotes were indistinguishable from those of the unaffected control subjects. Comparison of our findings with those of other disease processes that aff…

In 175 patients with clinical signs of grave impairment of the conductivity, absence of induced muscular potentials has helped to diagnose full anatomic rupture of the nerve, i.e. a case when resection and junction of the nerve by suturing are necessary. The examination of the induced muscular potentials made it possible to specify the degree to which the continuity of the axons inside the nerve trunk was preserved. The amplitude of the induced muscular potentials was lowered down to 0.01 mV. The speed of the stimulus conduction diminished down to 40.0 +/- 9 m/sec in cases of the median nerve

EPs elicited by diffuse light flashes and check patterns, were studied in children and juveniles with congenital and traumatic cataract, during different periods and various durations of deprivation, as well as in a control group of children and juveniles with normal vision. Specific age characteristics were found in the EPs to check patterns in seven years-old children. In children with congenital cataracts significant changes in the shape and amplitude-temporal EP parameters were recorded. In children with traumatic cataracts, presumably developed after the end of the sensitive period, the c

OBJECTIVE: To determine the amplitude changes of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) recorded simultaneously from the neck (cVEMPs) and eyes (oVEMPs) in response to 500 Hz, 2 ms air-conducted sound pips over a 30 dB range.
METHODS: Fifteen healthy volunteers (mean age 29, range 18-57 years old) and one patient with unilateral superior canal dehiscence (SCD) were studied. The stimulus was reduced in increments to 105 dB pSPL for the normals (81 dB pSPL for the SCD patient). A statistical criterion was used to detect responses.
RESULTS: Ipsilateral (i-p13/n23) and contralateral (c-n1

PURPOSE: At present, it is believed that intravenous (IV) infusion of lidocaine can inhibit hyperalgesia, relieve postoperative acute and chronic pain, and accelerate the rehabilitation of patients. However, studies of its effects on necessary electrophysiological monitoring during neurosurgery are few, and the results are controversial. This study assumes that the propofol-remifentanil based anaesthesia combined with lidocaine in patients undergoing intraspinal tumour resection will not have adverse effects on motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) or somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs).

STUDY DESIGN: Spinal cord evoked potentials and peripheral nerve evoked potentials after spinal cord stimulation were recorded under acute spinal cord compression in 19 cats.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of acute compression upon grey matter and white matter by comparing both potentials.
METHODS: We compared peripheral nerve evoked potentials, recorded at the biceps brachii branch of the musculocutaneous nerve, with descending spinal cord evoked potentials, recorded from the lumbar spinal cord, by stimulation to the C2 level, under compression of the C6 segment.
RESULTS: The ampli…

Objective In brain tumor surgery, gross total and supramarginal resections are sought to maximize survival, while maintaining neurological integrity. Cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs), initially introduced for intraoperative mapping of language pathways during awake surgery, have been recently applied to asleep procedures. The present work reports a review on CCEPs and subcortico-cortical evoked potentials (SCEPs) performed in brain surgery under general anesthesia. Methods PRISMA guidelines were applied. All records published up to March 2025, were searched through PubMed, Cochrane L…
