Relationship between upper airway diseases, exhaled nitric oxide, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness to methacholine.

OBJECTIVE: The "united airway disease" concept is based on the bidirectional interaction between asthma and rhinitis. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between upper airway diseases and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), as well as their association with the fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and atopy in patients with persistent symptoms suggestive of asthma requiring methacholine challenge testing (MCT) to confirm asthma diagnosis. METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study was carried out in adult patients with persistent asthma-like symptoms

Poor Relationship Between Fractionated Exhaled Nitric Oxide and Disease Activity in Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Current eosinophilic esophagitis care requires monitoring with repeat endoscopy and biopsy, which has significant cost, risk, and inconvenience for patients. Fractionated exhaled nitric oxide testing (FeNO) is a standardized non-invasive test with proven utility in evaluation of asthma. Elevated FeNO has reported use in other eosinophilic inflammatory conditions; however, its use in eosinophilic esophagitis has not been fully evaluated. To assess the utility of FeNO in predicting severity of eosinophilic esophagitis activity. Fifty patients received fractionated exhaled nitric oxide testing wi

Drug abuse screening with exhaled breath and oral fluid in adults with substance use disorder.

In the treatment of substance use disorder, regular laboratory-based testing has the dual purpose of monitoring compliance with the prescribed medication and abstention from medically non-motivated substances (ie, drug abuse screening). The principal specimen for testing is urine, but collection of urine has some disadvantages, for example being more time-consuming and more intrusive compared to other matrices. There is also the risk of adulteration. This project compared exhaled breath and oral fluid as alternative matrices for drug abuse screening in patients with substance use disorder. All

Outdoor air pollution, exhaled 8-isoprostane and current asthma in adults: the EGEA study.

Associations between outdoor air pollution and asthma in adults are still scarce, and the underlying biological mechanisms are poorly understood. Our aim was to study the associations between 1) long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution and current asthma, 2) exhaled 8-isoprostane (8-iso; a biomarker related to oxidative stress) and current asthma, and 3) outdoor air pollution and exhaled 8-iso.Cross-sectional analyses were conducted in 608 adults (39% with current asthma) from the first follow-up of the French case-control and family study on asthma (EGEA; the Epidemiological study of the G

Serum and exhaled breath condensate leptin levels in asthmatic and obesity children: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have highlighted the possible involvement of leptin in inflammation. The leptin receptor is also expressed by alveolar macrophages, T lymphocytes and bronchial epitelial cells, suggesting a possible role in the cascade of airway inflammation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of leptin in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) from asthmatic, normal- and overweight children, in relationship with airway inflammation. METHODS: 15 asthmatic non-obese children, 15 healthy non-asthmatic non-obese children, 11 obese children with asthma (OA) and 20 obe

Hydrogen Sulfide in Exhaled Gases From Ventilated Septic Neonates and Children: A Preliminary Report.

OBJECTIVES: There is increasing interest in hydrogen sulfide as a marker of pathologic conditions or predictors of outcome. We speculate that as hydrogen sulfide is a diffusible molecule, if there is an increase in plasma hydrogen sulfide in sepsis, it may accumulate in the alveolar space and be detected in exhaled gas. We wished to determine whether we could detect hydrogen sulfide in exhaled gases of ventilated children and neonates and if the levels changed in sepsis. DESIGN: Prospective, observational study. SETTING: The study was conducted across three intensive care units, pediatric, n

Determination of volatile organic compounds exhaled by cell lines derived from hematological malignancies.

UNLABELLED: Background: The gas human exhaled contains many volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which is related to the health status of body. Analysis of VOCs has been proposed as a noninvasive diagnostic tool for certain cancers. Detailed research on the VOCs in gas exhaled by cell can characterize cell type specific metabolites and may be helpful to detect the cancer markers in clinical practice. Methods: Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to detect VOCs in the headspace of tissue culture flask in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) cell line JEKO and ac

Visualization of exhaled hydrogen sulphide on test paper with an ultrasensitive and time-gated luminescent probe.

Luminescent chemosensors for hydrogen sulphide (H2S) are of great interest because of the close association of H2S with our health. However, current probes for H2S detection have problems such as low sensitivity/selectivity, poor aqueous-solubility or interference from background fluorescence. This study reports an ultrasensitive and time-gated "switch on" probe for detection of H2S, and its application in test paper for visualization of exhaled H2S. The complex probe is synthesized with a luminescent Tb(3+) centre and three ligands of azido (-N3) substituted pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, gi

Exhaled nitric oxide as a diagnostic tool for wheezing in preschool children: A diagnostic accuracy study.

BACKGROUND: Airways inflammation may precede pulmonary dysfunction in wheezing individuals. The fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) has been described as a useful method for wheezing diagnosis in children, however, its application requires evidence. This study aimed to determine the accuracy of FENO in identifying wheezing in preschoolers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with children from 3 to 5 years old, from Brazilian day care centers and public schools. They were evaluated by FENO measurement through the single breath method, and by ATS-DLD-78-C questionnaire that is

Exhaled nitric oxide: Not associated with asthma, symptoms, or spirometry in children with sickle cell anemia.

BACKGROUND: The significance of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (Feno) levels in children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) is unclear, but increased levels can be associated with features of asthma and thus increased morbidity. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine factors associated with Feno and whether Feno levels are associated with increased rates of acute chest syndrome (ACS) and pain. METHODS: All participants had SCA, were part of the prospective observational Sleep and Asthma Cohort study, and had the following assessments: Feno levels, spirometry, blood samples analyzed for hemoglobin, w

Evaluation of exhaled nitric oxide's ability to predict methacholine challenge in adults with nonobstructive spirometry.

BACKGROUND: Compared with methacholine challenge, exhaled nitric oxide is less expensive, is performed as a simpler point-of-care maneuver, and may provide treatment guiding information. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether exhaled nitric oxide levels can predict the outcome of methacholine challenge in patients without obvious baseline obstruction. METHODS: This retrospective database and medical record review included adults presenting to a tertiary care center from November 1, 2009, through August 31, 2013, who underwent methacholine challenge and exhaled nitric oxide measurement within 2 week

AIR POLLUTION INFLUENCES ON EXHALED NITRIC OXIDE AMONG PEOPLE WITH TYPE II DIABETES.

OBJECTIVE: In a population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), we examined associations of short-term air pollutant exposures with pulmonary inflammation, measured as fraction of exhaled pulmonary nitric oxide (FeNO). METHODS: Sixty-nine Boston Metropolitan residents with T2DM completed up to 5 bi-weekly visits with 321 offline FeNO measurements. We measured ambient concentrations of particle mass, number and components at our stationary central site. Ambient concentrations of gaseous air pollutants were obtained from state monitors. We used linear models with fixed effects for participants

Analysis of Exhaled Breath Volatile Organic Compounds in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Distinguishing between the inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD], Crohn's disease [CD] and ulcerative colitis [UC], is important for determining management and prognosis. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry [SIFT-MS] may be used to analyse volatile organic compounds [VOCs] in exhaled breath: these may be altered in disease states, and distinguishing breath VOC profiles can be identified. The aim of this pilot study was to identify, quantify, and analyse VOCs present in the breath of IBD patients and controls, potentially providing insights into disease pathogenesis and co

Significance of fractional exhaled nitric oxide in chronic eosinophilic pneumonia: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP) is characterized by chronic eosinophilic infiltration of the lung. It is dramatically responsive to corticosteroid treatment, but symptoms and radiopacities recur frequently after tapering or discontinuing the medication. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a well-known noninvasive marker of eosinophilic airway inflammation. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the relationships of FeNO with peripheral eosinophilia and the clinical state of CEP and its validity for predicting exacerbation of CEP. METHODS: Standard

Exhaled nitric oxide measurement to monitor pulmonary hypertension in a pneumonectomy-monocrotaline rat model.

The use of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has been suggested as a quantitative marker for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in humans. To further characterize FeNO in PAH we investigated this marker in a rodent model. Since there is no standardized technique for FeNO measurement in animals, we intended to reduce measuring errors and confounders of an existing published method by mathematical modification and tested its applicability in an NO-regulating therapy concept of PAH. Thirty-three male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent unilateral pneumonectomy and monocrotaline (MCT) injection

Effect of oral L-arginine administration on exhaled nitric oxide (NO) concentration in healthy volunteers.

We previously reported a case of pulmonary hypertension, where the symptoms were improved by oral L-arginine (arginine) administration. Arginine may increase nitric oxide (NO) production in the pulmonary artery. Exhaled NO may reflect pulmonary artery NO production. It has been demonstrated that exhaled NO concentration is higher in patients with allergic diseases, but whether oral arginine administration alters exhaled NO is unknown. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether oral arginine administration increases exhaled NO among healthy volunteers with and without a history of allerg

Head-to-head comparison of single-breath and tidal-breath exhaled nitric oxide measurements.

BACKGROUND: Exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) is an endogenous gas involved in airway pathophysiology and is determined in orally exhaled air by various techniques. However, traditional single-breath technique (eNO(SB)) requires active cooperation and is not always easily practicable (especially in young children); simpler techniques including tidal breathing measurements (eNO(TB)) are not standardized. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible correlation and correspondence between eNO(SB) and eNO(TB) and the impact of potential confounders in children with chronic adenotonsillar disease.

An electronic nose distinguishes exhaled breath of patients with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma from controls.

BACKGROUND: Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) is a tumour of the surface cells of the pleura that is highly aggressive and mainly caused by asbestos exposure. Electronic noses capture the spectrum of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) providing a composite biomarker profile (breathprint). OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that an electronic nose can discriminate exhaled air of patients with MPM from subjects with a similar long-term professional exposure to asbestos without MPM and from healthy controls. METHODS: 13 patients with a histology confirmed diagnosis of MPM (age 60.9±1
