The effect of short-term exposure to air pollution on the admission of ischemic stroke and its interaction with meteorological factors.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations, potential effects, and interactions between short-term exposure to air pollution and the risk of ischemic stroke (IS). STUDY DESIGN: An ecological study. METHODS: Daily data on IS incidents, air pollution, and meteorological conditions were collected from 2017 to 2021 in Gannan. A time-stratified case-crossover design, combined with a distributional lag nonlinear model, was employed to analyze the relationship between air pollution exposure and the admission of IS. Additionally, the interaction between air pollutants and

Interpretable machine learning analysis of environmental characteristics on bacillary dysentery in Sichuan Province.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial dysentery (BD) is a leading cause of diarrhea-related mortality globally, with its incidence heavily influenced by environmental factors. However, a climate zone-specific predictive model for BD was currently lacking in Sichuan Province. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to employ interpretable machine learning to explore the influence of environmental factors on BD incidence across different climate zones and to elucidate their interaction mechanisms. METHODS: Monthly data on meteorological and ecological factors, along with BD case reports, were collected from 183 counties i

Treatment of Frostbite With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Single Center's Experience of 22 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Frostbite is well documented in the military and countries with extreme temperatures, and it is most likely due to increased exposure to cold temperatures and/or risk-taking behavior. Severity of injury depends on absolute temperature, wind chill, duration of exposure, wet or dry cold, immersion, clothing quality, and substance use. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been described as a treatment option but only in small case series. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study is to describe the usage patterns, side effects, and outcomes of HBOT used as an adjunct to wound

Continuous chlorophyll fluorescence measurements trace sudden cold spell effects on the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II in a temperate mixed forest.

The increasing frequency of air temperature extremes and short-term fluctuations poses a significant threat to the physiological functioning of temperate forests across Europe. However, the mechanisms by which these fluctuations induce stress and impair the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) in tall tree canopies remain poorly understood. Moreover, the impact of air temperature extremes and fluctuations on ecosystem carbon fluxes remains poorly quantified. Here, we integrated real-time chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) and eddy covariance carbon flux measurements in a temperate mi

[Multifocal bone tuberculosis: apropos of a case].

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis of bone is rare (10 to 20 per cent of all skeletal tuberculosis). The multifocal form is exceptional even in endemic countries of tuberculosis. It constitutes less than 5 per cent of all osseous tuberculosis. CASE REPORT: O.H. 34 year-old, Moroccan woman of black race not vaccinated against tuberculosis, with a contagion, complained for a year from scapular pain and weight loss. She noticed that two masses had appeared six months ago. The patient was feverish (38 degrees). The physical exam showed a non inflammatory mass 10 cm wide located in front of the left sacro

Spatiotemporal variations in sea surface chlorophyll-a in the Seto Inland Sea.

Sea surface chlorophyll-a (SSC) variability in the Seto Inland Sea (SIS), Japan's largest semi-enclosed coastal system, reflects complex interactions among stratification, riverine inputs, oceanic exchange, and extreme climate events. Using satellite observations from 1998 to 2024, we investigated seasonal cycles, long-term shifts, and responses to extreme thermal events. Results reveal two distinct physical-ecological regimes. Inner basins (Regions 1-6 and 9) exhibit a stratification-retention regime characterized by positive SSC-SST and negative SSC-SSS relationships, with pronounced spring

Analysis of Extreme Thermal Variations in the Oral Cavity of a Patient with a Fixed Metallic Orthodontic Appliance Using the Finite Element Method.

Several decades after the development of FEM in computer-based form, which is a milestone in the evaluation of mechanical systems, the method has been adopted to analyze the biomechanical response of human skeletal structures. This innovative technique has generated new questions, but also new results, and, at the same time, competitive environments with explosive development, in the recent period. This research is focused on analyzing, using FEM, the extreme thermal variations produced at the level of two oro-facial systems (one control and one subjected to orthodontic therapy using a fixed m

Effect of Calcium-Channel Blockade on the Cold-Induced Vasodilation Response.

INTRODUCTION: Cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) is seen in the extremities during exposure to cold. A strong vasodilation response has been associated with a decreased risk of cold injury. Increasing CIVD might further decrease this risk. The calcium-channel blocker nifedipine causes vasodilation and is used to treat Raynaud's syndrome and chilblains. Nifedipine is also used for high altitude pulmonary edema and could potentially serve a dual purpose in preventing frostbite. The effects of nifedipine on CIVD have not been studied. METHODS: A double-blind crossover study comparing nifedipine (3

A systematic review on the association between total and cardiopulmonary mortality/morbidity or cardiovascular risk factors with long-term exposure to increased or decreased ambient temperature.

The health effects of acute exposure to temperature extremes are established; those of long-term exposure only recently received attention. We performed a systematic review to assess the associations of long-term (>3 months) exposure to higher or lower temperature on total and cardiopulmonary mortality and morbidity, screening 3455 studies and selecting 34. The studies were classified in those observing associations within a population over years with changing annual temperature indices and those comparing areas with a different climate. We also assessed the risk of bias, adapting appropriatel

In situ evidence of tiered adaptations buffering a chemosynthetic clam holobiont against environmental sulfide fluctuations.

Deep-sea holobionts adapt to extreme environmental fluctuations, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resilience remain poorly understood. We investigated the vesicomyid clam Archivesica marissinica and its sulfur-oxidizing symbionts during sulfide shortage via in situ transplant experiments at the Haima cold seep. Transplanting clams to sulfide-depleted conditions (moderate at HM-3 and severe at HM-2) revealed distinct response patterns of host-symbiont interaction. Symbionts may mitigate sulfide loss by shifting from sulfide oxidation to thiosulfate oxidation, supported by thiosulfate gen

Machine learning-based forecasting of daily acute ischemic stroke admissions using weather data.

The climate crisis underscores the need for weather-based predictive analytics in healthcare, as weather factors contribute to ~11% of the global stroke burden. Therefore, we developed machine learning models using locoregional weather data to forecast daily acute ischemic stroke (AIS) admissions. An AIS cohort of 7914 patients admitted between 2015 and 2021 at the tertiary University Medical Center Mannheim, Germany, with a 600,000-population catchment area, was geospatially matched to German Weather Service data. Poisson regression, boosted generalized additive models, support vector machine

Inexpensive thermal containers and insulation materials prevent deterioration of semen parameters for less than 90 minutes.

Male infertility contributes substantially to overall infertility, with temperature changes adversely affecting the sperm quality. During infertility treatments, the exposure of home-collected semen to extreme temperatures during transport deteriorates the semen parameters. This study investigates the effectiveness of thermal containers and insulation materials for preserving semen quality at low temperatures. Semen samples from 35 healthy male partners undergoing fertility treatments were analyzed. The samples were segregated in three groups and assessed: standard collection containers (Group

Response strategies to acute and chronic environmental stress in the arctic breeding Lapland longspur (Calcarius lapponicus).

The potentially devastating effects of climate change have raised awareness of the need to understand how the biology of wild animals is influenced by extreme-weather events. We investigate how a wild arctic-breeding bird, the Lapland longspur (Calcarius lapponicus), responds to different environmental perturbations and its coping strategies. We explore the transcriptomic response to environmental adversity during the transition from arrival at the breeding grounds to incubation on the Arctic tundra. The effects of an extremely cold spring on arrival and a severe storm during incubation are ex
